You are absolutely right about this. Apple wants people to buy up used macs. People were waiting for leopard before pulling the trigger. Now people will buy a mac- who wants to wait till October? But by then, Leopard will make heavy use of new features on the new MB/MBP (maybe multitouch/touchscreen?). Now you buy a SECOND mac.

good pint but i don t think so... it be a great marketing scam though.....

So, 6 more months of "I would get one, but I am waiting for Santa Rosa and Leopard"?!!!! Good luck!!!

Aren't you a bit cynical?

I am sure Apple will do no such thing!

Milking off their loyal userbase, that is unthinkable!

So. . .

Do you actually think Apple will update the Macbook Pros in June? Cause I am seriously seriously seriously PO'd I've been waiting for Leopard and a new Macbook Pro to get my first Mac and now we have to wait longer for Leopard. But I would just buy the next Macbook Pro and get Leopard in a year from now or something when everything is compatible. Problem is, do you think Santa Rosa will even be in the new Macbook Pros by June/July or will they wait till Leopard comes out. . . if that happens I will flip.   :p

June updates will include Leopard-required hardware

That doesn't make sense. Apple is showing a feature-complete Leopard at WWDC in June: They are going to show all the features of Leopard. If there's multitouch in Leopard we'll know about it June 11, and almost everyone would wait until October to get the multitouch MBP to go with it. Apple's only option at that point would be to release the MBP with multitouch in June, but not make use of it until October. Non-ideal, but at least it wouldn't stall sales until October.

Frankly I think it's unlikely to use multitouch at all, but if it does, the new Macs will include the necessary hardware.

Multi touch in a laptop form factor is too clumsy for Apple to consider it IMO. Why would you reach over the keyboard to touch the screen? And if you yell "tablet" than that's a whole other ball game considering multi touch isn't pen based.

I hope SR Macbooks are out before June...

Apple wont be changing the design of the MacBook at all, just bunging in a new motherboard, new CPU, GPU etc. It shouldn't take much engineering.

I think there will be multitouch, but you guys are such squares to assume that just because the iPhone did it using a touch screen display, the laptops have to do the same too.

Think different!

Multi touch trackpads!

"Multiclick" mice!

We will see Leopard users sitting in front of computers with 3-4 mice in front of them.

Finally joining the list

I've had ambivalent attitudes toward Apple in the past (insecure when my then-iBook had to be sent back for repairs, realizing I can't just boot a Linux live CD and use the same applications on any other computer; annoyance, such as when Apple marketing maintained that PowerPCs are viable competitors to x86 processors; and fear of addiction when it comes to unreleased products). I've even made up my mind, just yesterday, to get an HP laptop to replace my current one when Santa Rosa is released.

But then my current laptop died. Long complicated story involving buggy Microsoft ACPI compiler, leading to hotter temperatures under Linux that probably shortened the life of either the CPU or the logic board. This is actually my backup unit, but my main laptop (which replaced the iBook) was a Sony Core 2 Duo that I bought because I got tired of waiting for the Macbook C2D (predictably, it came out less than a week after my purchase) had a broken LCD after just a couple of months, after a 2.5 foot drop inside a protective case snugly fitted inside a bag (ridiculously fragile).

And it occured to me -- heck, I have had three Apples in the past and they have been reliable (though the PB 12" did run uncomfortably hot, and the iBook G4's screen was a bit pedestrian). And I like Apple's generous AppleCare policy (extend anytime within the first year. Sony will only let you do that within the first 60 days). Bring on Santa Rosa, hopefully before June!

I though the two-fingered scrolling feature on the trackpad meant it was already multitouch. Could be wrong.

It would be neat to see them put more gestures into the trackpad, but some really require a screen underneath the touch area for it to make sense.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say no multitouchscreen macs for at least a full year, most likely much longer. More like 2010.

I don't see why everyone seems to want one. I couldn't stand using one all the time! They are so impractical for 99% of what we do on the computer most of the time, ie. surf the net, write stuff, and play some games. None of those tasks are particularly finger friendly.

Post No. 486, marking the death of old, crappy Intel, and their old, crappy CPUs. Here's to the new, panicking and pressured Intel with their awesome CPUs, and insane roadmap! And lastly, here's to how crap IBM is.

I think if they should add aa touch screen to anything it should be the imac for kiosk displays and other industrial uses. Also it would be cool if they came out with a smaller form laptop like the 12" powerbook or smaller.

We are living parallel lives...

hahaha

We are living parallel lives...

:p :p :p

Even if the new Macbook Pros aren't announced at WWDC I am just gonna buy one cause this is way too long. If they are like, yea they are coming in September or October for sure. . . then I guess I will have to wait. I don't wanna get something when I know something better is so close away. We are all working off uncertainty right now, which is the worst part. If Apple would just let us know about things instead of being so secretive then it'd be an easy plan, but they probably wanna get rid of older machines so to let us know when new ones are coming out isn't really that good of an idea.

i really do not care about santa rosa as much as i want a new version. something to justify not buying one a year ago.

for anyone who says they will introduce touch screens has no idea what they are talking about because SJ hates tablets and their have been countless studies about the ergonomics of touch screens. basically you will have to hit the gym alot more often to keep touching the screen. plus leopard will still run on current macs.

(been lurking, finally registered)

anyways, in response to what somebody said -- apple would never say, "hey new models are coming soon," as it would halt sales even more.

i think it would be unwise for apple to push back the new models until october to coincide with the leopard launch because (1) santa rosa will be out for a while at that point and (2) they'll miss out on the back to school season computer buyers.

and this is probably unlikely, but if in the past apple has given vouchers for free os upgrades if you buy your computer within 30 days of release, maybe at WWDC when they do announce new models they'll throw in some kind of incentive to get users to upgrade to leopard (i.e. the upgrade voucher). probably unlikely but we can hope...

i'll be buying the high end MB or the low / middle MBP sometime between june and august anyways, just hoping the newest hardware refresh is out then.

hi, ya im way too lazy to see if this has been asked so ill ask it here and now?

it might seem dumb to you but whatever

what about battery life with santa rosa, improved same, what?

I don't think you'll have to worry about waiting till October for a MBP update. The timespan between revisions would be one month shy of a year, which is unheard of in the computer industry.

If anything I'd worry about Apple releasing a MBP update BEFORE SR and having to wait till November for SR notebooks.

If they did that I'd still just get that laptop. Cause it'd be the latest one out and I'd know I was getting the best I could get.

Not gonna happen.

It actually can't happen. What are they gonna upgrade? The MBP already uses the fastest mobile CPUs available, and it's graphics card is a good combination of power at low power requirements. If it is upgraded without SR or a DX10 GPU, all we could hope for is really just a better screen, and a bigger HDD. Wait 2 months more, and Apple can bump the CPU speed a tad, shove in mad awesome GPUs, faster RAM with BTO up to 4 GB instead of 3, and internal flash memory.
