From reading that article, im not sure if the Merom revision will have that technology as the article is just about the SR platform release in general. Perhaps the author is talking about the penryn but didnt specifically state it.

Isn't Penryn just a die shrink job, though? I'm pretty sure the clock boost is for Merom, since they have a lot of other updates in store for the next architecture revamp, Nehalem.

Dose anyone know what the reasonable time frame would be for the release of a Santa Rosa MBP? Lets assume that Apple is putting this as a priority. Do they have to start at the release date of May 9th to start developing it or do they begin working on this earlyer?

Apple probably already have Santa Rosa in their hands. In fact some SR laptops have already been unveiled.

I am sure if they ARE going to release the new MBP line it SHOULD be announced at WWDC 07'. . . that's what I'm hoping at least. Crossing my fingers for June 11th! :p

Just to tease some people: :D

To support the Penryn chips a new platform, including a new chipset will be released by Intel in 2008. The names are Montevina and Cantiga respectively. This new platform will ship in 2008 and will increase the frontside bus speed to 1067MHz and support for 800MHz DDR 3.
It will also include a new wireless module called Shiloh, which is expected to support WiMAX (802.16) in addition to HSDPA (3.5G).

Again, if you play the waiting game you will always be waiting but WiMAX and 3.5G integrated sure sounds nice. :p

Not really. . .

I am playing the waiting game but I will be getting the Santa Rosa, I'm not waiting any longer then that! :)

As soon as new mbp come out I'm getting one. I can afford to wait, seeing what's coming out technology wise is amazing.

It's not that I just want Santa Rosa with it's faster FSB and better battery life,
I am waiting for larger HD capacities. I think next month those 200GB 5400RPM drives will be released.

Hey that reminds me!

Do you think we'll see anything better then 100 gb 7200rpm? like 120 - 160 7200 rpm? Cause rpm matters more to me then the capacity, but it'd save me some room on an external drive. I'm planning on getting 2 so I would only need one.

I'm waiting for Santa Rosa because I'll be able to throw 8GB of ram in down the line once the price of 4GB dimm's come down. 64-bit ftw. :)

Hopefully they'll bump up the resolution of the 15.4'' to at least 1680x1050. My dell 15.4'' that i'll be replacing is that resolution and its a year old. With resolution independence coming, we should see higher resolutions. 1900x1200 would be nice.

Not really sure. 5400rpm is good enough for me for now. Does anybody know what kind of hard Drive capacity we might be seeing? Apple doesn't really update the configurations or give us too many options when it comes to this.

I'd rather have a 200GB 5400rpm perpendicular recording drive. They'd provide speed almost as much as the 7200rpm, but would save battery life.

Yea, but if you were recording bands (like I am going too) you need the fastest it can go so the computer can keep up with real time. The faster it spins the less of a chance of messing up the recording.

Makes sense.. however wouldn't it be better if you're working with digital audio (or digital video like myself) to use an external firewire drive? Using the system drive as a scratch disk slows everything down too.

Thats exactly the reason Im waiting for SR!:D I dont care about a little faster FSB and CPU althought that would be nice. 3 GB of RAM you can now cram in MBP does not seem to me "future proof"

Montevina make some halfway decent Zinfandels but really not all that exciting. Santa Rosa comes out next month, and Penryn is supposed to be a pin compatible drop-in replacement. Meaning, Daystar (an Apple Auth. Service center) or some other CPU upgrade company will be able to remove the Merom, and solder in the fastest available Penryn through 2008 or or later. So with the new chipset for the Penryn next year you'll get what, a slight increase in FSB speed? With a SR MBP, you could always add on WiMax & 3.5G; so yes it's nice to have it integrated from the start by Intel, but not a requirement.

One more month or so until the 'official waiting for Penryn' thread becomes the top of the heap ;)

if you are recording on Logic or Protools. Or doing DV editing... you would be silly to use anything but at least an external 7200rpm firewire drive. Check the glyphs. Thats just my opinion. I want capacity in my onboard HD for my massive iTunes Collection and my surreal iPhoto library. I am sick of carring around my little External HD that holds all my music on it.

I never worked with Protools or Logic on a Mac really, I did in school but we didn't have external hard drive, and with my PC, Protools is so dumb that if I make a partition on my hard drive it doesn't read anything. How dumb is that? So how would you even set up an external drive for recording with a Macbook Pro? The Macbook Pro will be my first Mac so I have a lot to learn. I figured I'd record with the internal hard drive and save on the external. . .

waiting...

I'm waiting for a Santa Rosa MBP. My PowerBook 15" 1.67 (which just turned 2) is feeling a bit dated, especially when next to a C2D MBP. I recently purchased a Canon EOS 350D, and tried using Aperture for working with RAW files, but waiting for it to process RAW files was unbearable. I tried Lightroom, and that gets along, but it still feels sluggish (and I'd rather be using Aperture).

Who thinks there will be enclosure updates? Haven’t we been on the same aluminum design (save for the addition of an iSight and other slight adjustments in Jan 06) for what... over 4 years now? WWDC looks like the perfect place for Steve to release a new MBP (since they won't be releasing Leopard). Thoughts?
