Don't you think Apple will wait until October before any further upgrades to the MB/MBP so they coincide with the release of Leopard?

Also, totally unrelated and slightly retarded question, is it possible to plug something like a PS3 or Xbox360 into a MB/MBP so you can use its nice screen? If not (which I'm pretty sure is the case), why not? Surely it would be pretty cheap to add a video input...

Has been covered before, but the short answer is, with Intel releasing updated chips later in the fall, Apple would stand to lose hardware sales to PC makers if they delay the update that long. Plus, releasing it early means they get to make more money from those (like me) who need new laptops soon and don't mind paying for Leopard later.

The only question mark surrounds resolution-independence -- Apple might not release a higher-resolution (> 100 dpi) screen until Leopard is out. But from what I hear, developers are not required to implement this for Leopard anyway, so we might have to wait for OS X 10.6 for that. In any case, I doubt Apple will bump up the resolution on the Macbook (too expensive), so I'll just settle with a KVM set-up with an external monitor.

Yes you can! Elgato TV, $150. It has HDMI input, and you get to record your gameplay if you want.

Hey, I looked at Buyer's Guide and counted when the macbook is supposedly to be upgraded. And guess what?...... For that Santa Rosa thing...... The Day od Upgrade hits right on Memorial Day..... So I would keep waiting until memorial day if i were you

This waiting game sucks. All I really need is a Macbook that i'll use for school work and maybe editing short-films for 4 years ( high school extracurricular activity). I'm not much of a gamer. I already have a well equipped computer that can play the games BF2142 and Sim2 and i have the money .............. ARRRRGGHHH PLZ help me out here. Is this really worth waiting for me?

It’s not likely for there to be any major *design* revisions for the Macbook, since the design is barely a year old (and Apple usually goes at least two years before changing case design, etc.). New technology (like flash hard drives) are likely to get rolled into the MacBook Pro first, and if that's the case they will wait until the WWDC in June (so any major changes to MacBooks would be even farther off). However, the MacBook is nearing the end of a cycle (check the Buyer’s Guide), and with Santa Rosa coming soon, a speed bump doesn’t seem so far off.

The question is whether you want to play the waiting game. The only thing that seems to be at stake here for the MacBook (*not* Pro) is performance gains. The MacBook should be powerful enough for you (especially if you already have a gaming rig of sorts), however, there's always the chance you could buy a MacBook and then Apple speedbumps the MacBook right after. Safest bet is to wait until June or July, but if you *must* have one now, it's not like you're buying some crippled computer.

The MacBook Pro might see new features at the WWDC in June, so I’d wait if you want to get the high end notebook.

Who thinks there will be enclosure updates? Haven’t we been on the same aluminum design (save for the addition of an iSight and other slight adjustments in Jan 06) for what... over 4 years now? WWDC looks like the perfect place for Steve to release a new MBP (since they won't be releasing Leopard). Thoughts?

Yeah, I was thinking something along these lines too. I do wonder what a new enclosure would look like. The current design seems to be pretty damn good. It's sleek and functional, durable and time tested. Not sure how you could improve much on that.

In a way it would be too bad. I'd hate to be waiting for a 1st generation design with it's attendant problems.

Isn't Penryn just a die shrink job, though? I'm pretty sure the clock boost is for Merom, since they have a lot of other updates in store for the next architecture revamp, Nehalem.

Penryn features evolutionary arch changes, 50% bigger L2 cache, (partial) SSE4 and a few other things as well as being the 45nm debut for laptops.

SR will use a 65nm Merom with slightly different clockspeeds due to the FSB changes (so, 2.2GHz and 2.4GHz will replace 2.16GHz and 2.33GHz processors).

Just to tease some people: :D

To support the Penryn chips a new platform, including a new chipset will be released by Intel in 2008. The names are Montevina and Cantiga respectively. This new platform will ship in 2008 and will increase the frontside bus speed to 1067MHz and support for 800MHz DDR 3.
It will also include a new wireless module called Shiloh, which is expected to support WiMAX (802.16) in addition to HSDPA (3.5G).

Again, if you play the waiting game you will always be waiting but WiMAX and 3.5G integrated sure sounds nice. :p

WiMAX and HSDPA integration had originally been slated for Santa Rosa and was "pushed back" to Montevina.

Just another limitation of the waiting game...

I'm sure I'm not alone in wishing for easier HD access. A better hinge would be nice too, I guess.

On the tech side, a better GPU, greater ram capacity (3GB seemed so big just a couple of years back!) and a higher res panel - 1680x1050 would be good.

Fantastic! Thanks for your help.

I believe the GPU of our dreams is released in a couple of days. Or at least announced. Radeon Mobility HD 2600XT FTW!

Maybe even with onboard sound and physics processing???

THANX:D :apple:

Could a 14" screen be put in the MB without increasing it's size? There's a lot of bezel there...

Agreed. It's such a very small screen in such a large notebook...
...well at least it looks big with that stupid little screen.

PS. Score! Avatar Rights! Wooo!

I too am waiting for SR/Leopard/iLife. I imagine Apple must be aware there's quite a few of us about. I know if you buy a mac after the shipping date of the next OS is announced (usually a month before it ships), they give you an automatic upgrade to that OS. What are the chances of Apple saying "I know we promised to be shipping Leopard by now, so when you buy one of these new SR MBPs today - you'll get a free upgrade when Leopard comes around"
That'd get me to bite I think - particularly if I didn't have to upgrade iLife too.

I really hope that is what happens on June 11th.

That'd be even better than getting the new OS right away, actually. If there's any stability problem, you have a legit copy of the previous OS.

That'd get me to bite I think - particularly if I didn't have to upgrade iLife too.
Now that, I'm not sure :p What's been the past policy, does Apple give you only the install disc for the new OS, or also the restore DVD? The latter would have the latest iLife, I suppose.

There are 1440*900 14.1" displays. It would be great if Apple could squeeze one of those into the MBs and give the MB's a res boost to 1680*1050 on the 15".

No Way Jose

For a shipping fee.

The chances are ZERO minus Infinity.

I would def get one in june if that was the case, take note :apple: !!!

Probably not, but I'd venturer a guess that he knows more than you do. Anywho, count me in for the "waiting for SR MBP."

I would say in terms of the matter at hand that we know exactly the same. Because we both have no real clue of what exactly will come to be.

Is there any word on what graphics chip the SR MBP will use?

While ATI and Nvidia maybe be pretty close in graphic capabilities I hope Apple sticks with Nvidia. A NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 GTX with 512MB GDDR3 would at least suffice and it only draws 65W.

Now if only they use a HD screen this time around we will be in business. Maybe the iPhone won't cause them to cut back on another great product.
