sorry if this has already been answered.....or if its a stupid question....will the santa rosa platform boost CPU speeds....right now on the MB there 1.83 and 2.0...will they be faster than that or stay the same?

Only differences will be to compensate for the change in FSB speeds will top out at 2.4 GHz up from the 2.33 currently available.

Hard to say.

The current roadmap suggests that the 800MHz FSB chips are 2.4/2.2/2.0/1.8/1.6/1.4GHz.

However, it appears the 1.8GHz part will now sport 4meg L2 cache (vs the 2meg cache of the current 1.83GHz part).

There's also some 667Mhz FSB chips on the roadmap with the same clockspeeds/cache sizes as the current Core 2 Duo range. I assume that's basically what's currently out but in Socket P form.

As to what Apple will do, who knows?

so. . .

there is only one day till the Macbook Pro is overdue for an update!!! :) . . . even though that's not really saying much. . . the whole Mac line is pretty stale. I wonder what they are doing over there? Like the Mac Pro update was only making it 8 cores? What's with that? And the display update was just making a price drop? Maybe Steve will release all new EVERYTHING at WWDC07' doubt it though.

I'm a video guy, so I'm not waiting for couple of percents more cpu speed, but
1) blu-ray
the industry has changed to hd, when will apple?
Sony's been shipping brd-laptops about an year now...
2) eSata
much faster than fw and has been around for ages. They could drop fw400 port from mbp and bundle an adapter cable fw400<->fw800.
3) fullHD led lcd
my powerbook's backlight has faded unusable in bright light, so maybe leds could last a bit longer...

Apple used to be State of the Art, but has became State of the Profit, sad...

I'm just asking why they couldn't offer new upgraded mbp now and free upgrade to Leopard when ever it will ship for real?

I don't see them offering BRD even as a BTO -- had they were ready to move in that direction I think the Mac Pro would have gained it, at least as a BTO, when they launched the dual-quad config.

eSata and a higher res LCD would be very nice and there's no major reason they can't provide it. We'll see, I guess.

They can't offer an upgraded MBP now because Santa Rosa isn't out yet.

Offering a free upgrade to Leopard, why would they? They know if they don't, people buy it. It's all about the Benjamins, baby...

Waiting...

Hey guys. Ive been lurking for a while and have a few questions of my own.

Ive made my decision to buy the mid range MBP whenever the next update is. I was pumped to get leopard too, but I can stand buying that later. Im going to be bumping the RAM up to 3gb, 4 if another gb is under 100$ and going to be dual booting XP or Vista...depending how buggy Vista is and when I need it.

My main question is, is there any advantage to buying Leopard preinstalled (over buying leopard) besides the money?

THe next iLife....does it come out with 10.5? Or is it independant?

Also, exactly HOW bad is the GPU on the current high end MBP, and how much better COULD it get if MBPs come out at WWDC07?

Holy moley I hope WWDC shows us the new MBPs... I can wait but it is hard

Current MBP maxes out at 3GB.

iLife has always been separate in the past.

X1600 is pretty old in GPU terms, though it'll run a lot of current games pretty decently.

How much better it could get... tricky. The problem is there's not a lot out there right now that's better that has power draw close to the current X1600. ATI has nothing announced, NVidia only has the 7700 and 7900 that are close. The 7700 improves fillrate by a fair margin but it pretty much the same on shader performance. The 7900 is about 10-15% faster in shaders and offers around 3x the fillrate. Both are in desktop terms, "last gen" parts.

It's possible Apple could put in an as-yet unnannounced part -- aside from the Mobility HD 2300 (which is worse than the X1600), I've not seen anything on mobile versions of the current desktop generation.

A Santa Rosa based MBP is a reasonable expectation around the WWDC though.

No, not really. The preinstalled version of OS X is the same as standalone copies of OS X. The only difference is that when you get the OS preinstalled, the install DVD also has extras on it (like iLife, OmniOutliner, ComicLife, etc.). You'll still be able to use these extras if you get a MBP with Tiger and then buy Leopard. You can either Upgrade from Tiger to Leopard, or reformat or Archive and Install (my recommendation) and install Leopard fresh, then install the extras that came on your Tiger DVD.

As for iLife, I personally believe that it (along with iWork) will come out at the same time as Leopard (as they are supposed to be dependent on Leopard). However, it won’t be packaged WITH Leopard unless you get Leopard preinstalled on your Mac. So if you want a free version of the latest iLife, then wait for Leopard preinstalled with your MBP.

So the X1700, X1800, and X1900 perform better, but also have a greater power draw. So, the X1600-1900 cards are similar in technical capabilities, but different in performance/power draw? And what does the Mobility HD 2300 offer that the X1600/1700/1800/1900 cards not have (besides inferior performance =P )?

Yes, but is it feasible to have a 4GB limit on the new models? I mean, if MBPs are only updated once e/10 months or whatever, then programs needing more than 3 GB are a definite possibility (or above 3 to run nicely)

Crestline supports up to 8GB of physical memory so yes, it's possible, depending on signal routing on the motherboard.

There were no update for quad mac pros, so there still might be an update coming for mac pro line. I'm so tired of waiting that I'm looking for used mac pro now. At least it can be upgraded little easier than mbp. I can't afford 8-core mp and I'm not even sure if there's lots of programs that can benefit 8 cores without having bottlenecks elsewhere. If there's no update for quads in WWDC, there propably won't be any before MWSF 2008 and there's no use waiting or even buing a new one.

They can't offer an upgraded MBP now because Santa Rosa isn't out yet.
Other companies have launched their SR laptops already.

Half the mbp buyers won't buy before Leopard. If Apple does not want to sell so many of them in the summer, thats their choise.
There might be something like a million of PowerBook+Tiger owners that will upgrade to mbp+Leopard as soon as it's possible.

Other companies have launched their SR laptops already.

They've announced them. They haven't launched them. SR isn't available until May 9th.

Apple rarely announces new computers ahead of time. Generally, they're announced on the day they're available.

I'd wager the majority of consumers haven't even heard of Leopard. The users here are mostly the "hardcore". The majority of the user base pay a lot less attention.

Certainly the majority of users I know fall into this category. Computers are just a tool. The only time they look anything up online or ask questions of others is if they have a technical problem or if they want to buy something new.

For those who won't buy until Leopard is released -- Apple still gets that money, just a little later. For everyone else, most who buy in now but before the launch of Leopard will eventually upgrade to Leopard, so there's an extra $130 from most of them -- more if they also get the iLife upgrade, whereas if they do a coupon offer, not only do they lose out on upgrade cash, but it will actually eat into their profit margin albeit to a very slight degree.

I'm just not convinced the number out there who won't buy until Leopard appears is greater than the number who will buy anyway and then buy the upgrade in 2008.

Based on the current situation, it appears Apple feels that way too. Come the WWDC, we'll see if things change.

The X1600-1900 are similar in the fact that they are DX9 only, and they use old technologies. The HD 2300 is crap. You don't want it in the MBP. I don't think it offers anything that the X1600 doesn't. I believe it was going to be called X1450 or something.

What we WANT is the HD2600. This has unified architecture, so each pipeline can change and do different calculations, depending on what it needs. It also is on a 65nm process, so should use less power with more performance than other X1xxx cards, and nVIDIAs newer offerings. Basically, they should be really awesome, and they will be released officially on the 14th of May. Around when SR is released I believe? And less than a fortnight after my birthday.

I hope they're 4GB supporting (I would only buy 1 or 2GB at the start - but 4GB allows so much room in two years to almost give mysef a 'new machine') as I did with an old Powerbook.

I can't wait. I am selling my iMac G5 this week and my MacBook at the End of June.

I truely cannot wait for this new laptop!

That used to be the way in the old times, but recently they have announced mbp, atv and iPhone well before they were/are available.
Apple also used to be the first to use new tech; they offered dvd-r very early, but now have delayed many new technologies (like brd & esata).

If I would buy mbp now, I'd have to buy also additional brd-drive, pc-card reader (I use panasonic's p2 camera), esata-card and Leopard & new iLife. That's just too much now, when I don't know if there's going to be upgrade at WWDC and what it will be. I waited for new mbp at MWSF and after that "in spring" when Leopard was supposed to be ready. I hope they won't delay new models any more because of Leopard being late. There are lots of people who wanted to buy new hardware with Leopard "in this spring". It's becoming quite funny to look at MacRumors Buyer's Guide when all models are "Don't buy". (Quads should also be "Don't buy".)
At least in this situatuion Apple should tell if there are any upgrades coming at WWDC and even better what kind of upgrades.

Majority of consumers don't even buy Macs. And majority of that minority that do, buy macbooks. I'd guess that majority of mbp users are quite "hardcore" and majority of those who has visited Apple's site this year do know what Leopard is. Half the time it's on Apple's front page. And all computer magazines are reviewing different OS's now that Vista is out.

Help me!! I am about to give in and buy the MBP right now!! I have been waiting since March, not very long but in March I sold my computer to buy the MBP but decided to wait for the changes! I don't know if I can wait till June for the updates! I really want to see two things - 1600x1200 (or close too the MBP's screen has different ration) and a better graphics card - both in the 15.4" MBP. I am seriously on the verge of just buying now, and putting all that waiting time to waste! Can anyone convince me to wait?

Get a **** job and wait. :)

Then wait.

Then go have more sex.

Wait....

then wait.

Then buy!

Stay strong my friend. Thats what this thread is for. We need to carry each other through the tough times. You can make it.

I'm actually pretty excited about all the possibilities. I've been doing research on Macs, hanging out here, and waiting like everyone else on this thread since before Apple switched to Intel. Finally Santa Rosa is becoming a reality and I can almost see my new MacBook Pro around the corner. It will be a hobby machine, and a gift to myself, so I can wait as long as it takes. Like many, though, I am growing impatient/excited knowing that it's just weeks away.

Hold on tight, Folks. We're almost there.

:D

Apple also used to be the first to use new tech; they offered dvd-r very early, but now have delayed many new technologies (like brd & esata).

That's for their mainstream consumer products. The iPhone in particular though, they had to announce if they wanted to make the big stir they did, because the way cell phone certification works there's no way they could have kept it secret.

The MBP was announced the same day the new iMacs appeared, presumably because of the way the Intel switch was being handled -- ie they said a driving reason for the change to Intel was because of the power-per-watt advantage for mobile parts.

The C2D changes weren't announced ahead of time, nor were the new iMacs or the Mac Pro. Traditionally, Apple doesn't announce systems until they're ready to ship, and they appear to be being characteristically tight-lipped about SR systems so far, too.

If I would buy mbp now, I'd have to buy also additional brd-drive, pc-card reader (I use panasonic's p2 camera), esata-card and Leopard & new iLife. I too hope the new systems aren't delayed. However, I don't think you're an average consumer.

I agree completely about the dual-quad systems.

As I said earlier, Apple's generally been quiet on what's coming soon. Just part of the joy of using their products, I guess... not one of their more endearing qualities though.

Obviously, I meant the majority of consumers who buys Macs. However, if Apple offered their buy-now-get-Leopard, they'd need to do it across the board. To do it for just one line will annoy the people buying the other lines to the point they may go elsewhere. So it doesn't matter that they might buy MacBooks. So in that respect it doesn't matter what system they buy.

Having said that, I know several MBP users. None of them are hardcore. They're all photographers, graphic design pro's or the like. Some have the computer through work.

A banner saying something about Leopard on the Apple site won't do much because they don't know what it is, even if they saw it. Most people seem to just "filter out" such things, especially when they're looking for something else. Having done stints in tech support in the past, and having volunteered at a non-profit to help and done tech support for them for free, I'm constantly amazed at just how much apparently intelligent, educated people can just "not see" on the screen. Stuff that is right in front of them.

I'll be not a single one of them has read a review of Vista, either. They don't read computer magazines. Most people don't. Hell, I don't anymore, either... usually about 6 weeks behind these here intertubes :)

Like I said, we're talking about people for whom the computer is simply a tool, a means to an end.

I'll do an informal poll some time but I'd bet cash that few if any know what Tiger means, never mind Leopard.

The only reason so many have heard of Vista at all is because it's on the evening news on TV occasionally... even then, I still get questions about "that new Windows" ...

I hope they're 4GB supporting (I would only buy 1 or 2GB at the start - but 4GB allows so much room in two years to almost give mysef a 'new machine') as I did with an old Powerbook.

Based on what I know, I'd say that any SR system will almost certainly support at least 4GB. It's possible they'll support 6-7GB.

Likewise, I'd likely start out with 2GB but the wiggle room is nice, and RAM is something you can never have too much of.

Awesome!! I would just love to buy a computer with years of upgrade ahead. The MacBook is maxed out right now to me, so it's better to sell it now.

I totally agree with your previous post. My girlfriend loves the OS and is an architect. She uses XP and knows what it 'is' but doesn't know what Leopard is, or Tiger and I cannot be bothered to ask about Vista, but I would bet she wouldn't give a firm answer to exactly what is was.

A lot of people really do just use computers for work and see it as a tool. They are not posting here I feel... :)

Will Apple have enough time to put it into the MBPs?

After all Apple unlike other OEMs design their own logic boards by themselves. They are going to require months and months of testing before the new revision is even ready to ship.

My prediction? The next update will just see a speed bump, all the cool technologies (robson, LED displays, new GPU) will come with Leopard.
