  • 2 x 27" Thunderbolt Displays
  • 1 x 27" Cinema Display (center)

Semi-circular sit-stand desk

Speaking of upgrading, when they come out with a 4k Cinema I'll upgrade the center for one of those. That will be a nice combination, center 4k and older TB flanking.

No 4K for me yet: too expensive and I want to see how things pan out, standards-wise. A doubling (in each dimension) of 2560x1440 would be ideal for me for a 27 inch size monitor. That way (once developers support it) you can run it in 2X mode and don't have the UI scale down, as would happen on a 3840x2160 screen. And 2X mode on the latter would result in too little real estate to play with.

But my understanding is that even Thunderbolt 2 can't actually support the above mentioned quadrupling bandwidth-wise at 60Hz.

So for now, I've narrowed my shortlist down to the Apple Thunderbolt Display and the Dell 2713H.

My current Dell Ultrasharp 27" U2711 and 23" U2313HM, connected via the display port to mini display port cables.

When I order and receive it, I'll be hooking up my Dell Ultrasharp U3011 via HDMI. Gotta have an ergonomic, height-adjustable matte screen with at least Adobe RGB 98 color space, which leaves Apple out of the picture.

What's the best way to take a look at a high end monitor before buying?

I'm eyeing the PA272W but I hope it doesn't have any dealbreaker issues like a thick sparkly antiglare coating.

Most places have restocking fees (except B&H Photo Video apparently), would hate to go through all the trouble of shipping one back and forth and get dinged 15%, but if there's no specialty shops or studios nearby that have one, I guess that might be the only option.

It is really annoying to find demo models on some of those displays, even in large markets. I suspect the margins aren't as good on NEC, as a lot of places here push Eizo.

I was planning on getting a Dell as they have always had a great cost/performance thing, but man the latest ones are UGLY.
I really hate the stand they come with, and while that can be fixed, the two tone color scheme cannot.
Of course these don't affect performance at all, but I am in front of my computers a lot and I don't like to "put up with" ugly stuff.

I've been all over B&H looking at various models and I may go for either NEC Samsung or Asus. But I'll wait til after CES blows over. There are surely some new panels in the wings.

PS for a minute I was looking at the LG 29EB73-P, but then I realized it was still only 1080 tall. (and the base is ugly)

I plan on upgrading the monitor at some point, but I'll probably wait until the Apple releases a TB Display revision and see what that is before I do anything. I wouldn't mind a 4K in the 27"-28" size-range. Dell makes a 24" 4K which seems a too small for that resolution (unless the nMP will give me the 2x "retina" setting like the retina MacBook Pros do). And a $3500 32" 4K display is too much/too big for me.

In the meantime, the nMP on order will be connected to a Dell 30" 3008WFP over DisplayPort. I'm not in love with the display, but at present it's just sitting idle so I'll make do for now.

was in at the local flagship apple store over at the KOP mall and they had no idea when the nMP would arrive nor what it would be displayed on. Asked about the Sharp and I got another not sure.

was hoping to see the new set up but sounds like its still a couple weeks out.

Just a display question; does Mavericks finally support 10-bit color displays? ML does not…Or is it no requirement for your work?

Does It Matter

As others have stated, I plan on sticking with my Cinema Display until a 4K monitor is absolutely required.

With that in mind, what (if anything) does 4K video look like on a a non-4K display? I will be finding out later today. Not that I have the latest MP, but just got my hands on a 4K video cam.

Thanks

Hmm I just assumed this is how it would work. Anything else would make everything super small.

Video not sure but if they do it like the rMBP most of the programs I use already support it. To me anyway it is night and day as far as readability and eye strain.

Kind of a side question. I have seen many people complaining that there is nothing that can use the dual video cards. Wouldn't dual video cards help if you have a dual monitor setup regardless of if the programs supported it? I find my rMBP can get a bit bogged down at time graphically if I have a lot of open programs in a bunch of desktops with an external monitor connected.

The Dell ultrawide 21:9 display looks nice, but too bad it's only 1080 pixels high. Not enough for me (I do enough page layout, word processing and reading that anything less than 1200 pixels vertical gets cramped).

Dell 30” + Dell 24” (portrait) + Dell 24”

(using a Mini recently has been very limiting!)

Two Dell 30-inch 2560 x 1600 displays here (U3011 and U3014); not in a rush for 4K. I just received the 6-core Pro this afternoon and will try and heat it up as soon as Carbon Copy Cloner finishes doing its thing.

So far I am extremely impressed - the responsiveness is unbelievable, and the build is rock solid. Apple is still using thick aluminum on the Pros. The rim is an even better handle than the ones on the old G4 Quicksilver "computers under glass."

However, my TB RAID box has noisy fans that appear way out of kilter. Looks like I'll need to get an RMA.

Going to use 4 x 30" Apple Cinema Displays. They still look and perform amazing!!!

Sticking with my 2010 vintage 30" ACD. It's still works perfectly well and I like matte. My only minor complaint is the lack of modern ports...old USB and FW ain't going to cut it too many more years. Related to that, it would be nice if those USB ports had enough power to charge my iPad.

I can't speak to on-location digi tech work, but I also use a 2013 27" iMac with basically the same glossy screen as the TB display and I can vouch that it is beautiful to look at. Reflections aren't really an issue unless light is shining directly on your screen and if that was the case, you would have a location problem.

Matte vs. glossy is probably more of a personal preference. Glossy could have some issues with distracting reflections, but images may also feel brighter/more vibrant. I know that I can sit in front of a matte screen for 16+ hours a day without much eye fatigue, but I don't know that I could say the same about a glossy screen.

I'm getting the TB display in addition to my HPZR24. I'll give the client the choice of displays for the job

Jesus Christ, i just got this thing and it is so reflective my girlfriend is using it to do her makeup! I'm going to have to wear a black hood and tell my clients that performance art is included in the package deal!

Seriously i have to wear black t shirts to color correct, is there a screen protector or something? what are some solutions before i return it?
