Got a new 27" TB display and will probably use my Dell 24" pro monitor via HDMI to the side of it (swivelled to portrait).

Going to use 4 x 30" Apple Cinema Displays. They still look and perform amazing!!!

I'll certainly be hanging on to mine until 4k spec/prices settle down. However, being a 'bear of little brain', I don't really understand why I'm apparently going to need a very expensive Dual Link DVI adaptor to connect the 30" ACD to the MP's Thunderbolt port. Can anyone explain in words of one syllable or less?

Will the Firewire ports work on your 30in ACD?

Sticking with my 2010 vintage 30" ACD. It's still works perfectly well and I like matte. My only minor complaint is the lack of modern ports...old USB and FW ain't going to cut it too many more years. Related to that, it would be nice if those USB ports had enough power to charge my iPad.

I'm in the same boat with one 30in ACD and a friend of mine just offered me a second one for $400. I'm simply wondering if all the ports in the back will work. I think the USB 2 will but wondering about the Firewire ports?

Tks.

Single-link DVI can't push the full 2560x1600 resolution of the 30" ACD. You need dual-link DVI to run the display at native resolution.

Only if you plug the display pigtail into a firewire port.

So the 'Dual-link' element of the current connection to my old Mac Pro is where? On the video card or in the tethered cable? If the latter, why do I need the adaptor? If the former, the adaptor requirement seems harsh considering that Thunderbolt will run 4k.

That's right, I'm still not getting it. Sorry. : |

Planar have a cool iMacesque display (27" 2560x1440). They even use the same/similar laminated process that Apple use so the reflections should be at minimum.

Toms hardware did a review of this puppy .

:D

I don't own the display nor the MacPro! just saying!

I kept looking for alternatives to the Apple 27" TB display but it kept coming back down to Sound + Camera which I think are pretty high quality considering there size. I have to Skype clients and didn't want a webcam and headset for that.

Apple should have released an updated display to go with the nMP though. Thats was just crazy eyes to not do it.

the worst part about the current TB display is that it doesn't have the laminated screen process that the last two generations of iMac had. I'm not relying on a screen to reproduce sound. I would still get a high resolution web cam and a good mic.

With either of these, there is no bad choice.

:)

Nice look for the new Mac pro.

I have an older iMac that I can't use target display on.

I will see myself! Cool, I'm shallow like that :D

But I think I will be OK, I don't have to do colour accuracy work and I do like their displays as seen in the store. Although my Matte Dell is really nice to work on for long periods. Hmmm. The only way is to try it in my office. I could always paint the walls a darker colour for a few $.

But thanks for making me aware of this.

I don't mind the glossy display, in fact I prefer them. I dislike the AG coating that they put. I ordered a Nixeus 27" (same LG panel used inside the iMac).

You don't need to change your paint! You can already test, use your iphone in your office, you will get the same result!

Good idea.

ok. looked fine on iPad-Mini when I unlocked it with almost all reflections vanishing. Obviously any Jet Black display will enhance the mirror effect but I can hopefully work around that with some Apple Feng Shui :D

The display situation is killing me!! Just finally pushed myself to clicking the order button on the 8core d700 Mac Pro. Ok fine  but now I have to say goodbye to my nice and beautifully thin iMac 27" and need to find so unhinged adequate.

The aforementioned planar display looks nice though it's not available in Germany!

I just want a new Thunderbolt Display in the looks of my iMac with the exact same resolution and two of those!
Currently next to my iMac there's an old 24" acd. If I'll keep that, I wonder what else to get for a new main display.
Dells new 28" 4k? But what about the small menus and stuff? Use it in hidpi mode via hack? Then I only have 1080p style screen estate for ui elements in after effects, so that's stupid too. Get a current 27" tb display from eBay until new ones arrive seems to be the best solution for me right now.

But I'm really wondering how were supposed to use those new 4k screens in the eyes of apple?

24" WQHD (2560x1440)?

I really want to run dual 24" monitors, and I would love for those monitors to be 2560x1440, but I don't think anyone makes a monitor like that... Anyone know of one?

I don't have space on my desk for dual 27" monitors. I usually have to have a Windows or Linux VM running so that is usually plopped onto one of the monitors.

I also don't really wanna spend $1500 for the Dell 24" 4K monitor...

Also, I have really good eyesight, so the HiDPI of the theoretical 24" WQHD would be ok with me.

Won't you have a HDCP issues using the 30" ACD with the nMP? (Not be able to watch HD videos, for example?) I do already with my 30" ACD and my Mac Pro 3,1...

Just following up on this post. I never encountered any HDCP complaints with my Mac Pro 3,1 (8800GT) and 30" ACD. I got my nMP hooked up over the weekend with the Apple MDP to dual link DVI adapter and I cannot play any iTunes HD content exactly as predicted by jmac69.

It's not a real hassle for me -- I rarely want to sit at my desk and watch movies or TV shows. I use my Apple TV for viewing. It is still a little bit frustrating, though, and definitely accelerates my desire to get a 4K display once there's a clear good choice available on the market.e
