So, two weeks and one day in with the OnePlus 5. My thoughts so far:

  • It has become not only my daily driver but more or less the only driver. I used to carry also my iPhone 7 as a backup, but now I find myself going out with just the OP5 (including a full-day trip to a Guns N' Roses show in another town). In fact, I noticed that the iPhone had almost run down its battery with just idle drain as I've forgotten to even charge it.
  • Battery life isn't a concern. With my use no phone (unless we talk about batteries around 10000mAh) is going to have a multi-day battery life, so just how easily I get through the day is what matters for me. The combination of at least an OK battery and wicked fast charging is a winner for me. As I need to top-up pretty much very phone at some point during a typical day, the speed at which the top-up is done is crucial. Here Dash charge takes the crown.
  • Jelly scrolling issue reminds me of Antennagate with the iPhone 4 (which I also had). Both issues were not affecting my use (I guess I was holding it right) and the coverage felt way overblown. Naturally YMMV, but I guess I'm lucky that a proposed deal-breaker issue with both phones is far outweighed by the positive sides of the device.
Here's one more photo sample with the latest stable update. That's my new Finnish baseball glove right after today's practice and it was just a quick snap on automatic settings, but the details and how the mesh is handled seem nice.

dxo doesn't mean much but it's interesting it's only 1 pt below the s8

That seems a little odd. While the OP5 camera isn't bad, I'd think the S8 one is better (haven't owned one, so it's hard to say for sure). Of course one possibility is that the consultation with dxo focused on scenarios they test regularly and at least I'm under the impression that they employ a tripod quite a lot. A handheld casual shooting comparison should give the S8 a bigger lead.

Well, I have OP5 since last Friday. From purchase to arrival - less then 4 working days. Impressive. I've purchased 64GB version, since I really don't need 128GB, and I highly doubt I will ever need 8GB of RAM :)

After using it for a few days, all I can see is that this phone meets almost all of my expectations. FP sensor is the fastest I have ever used. I haven't noticed even a single glitch or lag. This phone simply flies. Even when compared to OP3T. I also own OP3T, and unless you are a complete idiot like me, it's not. worth the upgrade. 3T is still faster then any flagship on the market, except OP5 of course. But even then, I simply can't see any big difference there. I think I see just a small speed bump, but that could be that I am seeing what I want to see, not what is really there to be honest :)

Overall, design doesn't look like iPhone 7+. Dual camera is the only similarity I can see. OP5 fits nicely in the hand, and the weight is really well distributed. Curved back helps to keep the phone in the hand, and it's kinda hard to explain, but this phone feels way better in the hand when compared to OP3T, even though they are pretty similar in size.

iP7+ isn't even a comparison here, since that is my least favorite phone to hold in the hand. Big, clunky, slippery.

I won't post any camera pics yet, since I really hadn't had the time to go out and take some. All I have done is taken some pics of my kids, and in daylight, this camera is pretty damn great. Click 'n' shoot style, it gets the job done. And to be honest, I am no camera expert :)

I've also done the test that I have promised you. First I have rebooted the phone. And then I've loaded up some apps. Here is the complete list of the apps I have loaded:

play store, whats app, cynognenmod browser, yr.no, next episode, sofa score, audible, headspace, mx player pro, gym fitness, pulsar, slack, simplenote, 1password, uber, oneplus community app, njuskalo (croatian ebay), google keep, youtube, taskary, dropbox, file manager, hangouts, speedtest.

So if I've counted correctly, that is 23 apps. 0 games. I don't game, but I will come back to the game part later on.
I have opened those apps, and started switching them. Not even one app did a refresh. Every single one was still in memory. EVERY SINGLE ONE. This beats even OP3T, since OP3T on the same apps held 'just' 17 in memory :)

Then I wondered what would happen if I leave those apps and phone for 3-4 hours... Well, 19 apps were in memory still, just 4 needed a refresh. And the refresh is as snappy as it can get.

So knowing that, I have used my friend OP5 to compare them, since they got 8GB versions. Then we installed some games (War Robots, some racing game, and of course - pokemon). Well, we used 12 apps, and those 3 games. 6GB and 8GB version did just about the same - they held everything in RAM.

I couldn't use their phones for 3-4 hours to test it even further, but I really think 6GB is more then enough for anyone :)

In a month or so I will take a journey down to croatian coastline. I will try to make some pictures then. But don't expect much, since I'm really a photo noob :)

I noticed that the iPhone 7+ likeness is there in pictures from certain angles, but not so much apart from the camera position when holding the actual device in hand. Granted, my iPhone 7 is the regular non-plus model, but it feels way thicker due to a more uniform thickness. The curved back makes the OP5 nice to hold and less of an iPhone-lookalike in real life.

Thank you so much for testing for me, I really appreciate it.

I am definitely going for 6gb model - i am holding off for the moment to see if OP sort out the other minor issues (jello wobble) via software and then I will jump on board. They have been very proactive with updates so far, so I'm hopeful they address it sooner rather than later.

I'm also hoping they release another colour option, a blue or red metal back with the black front would look so awesome.

As for iPhone 7+ comparisons - I don't really mind if it bares a resemblance. It's a total non issue, only see it being an issue if you have an aversion to the iPhone for some reason. I don't...

Well, still pretty impressed by this phone. Speed of it is really something special, but owning OP3T, I am not really surprised. And for once, I didn't root right away. Wanted to get those OTA asap, and that was a right move.

Only headache so far is battery. When I am using the phone constantly, there is no problem. I get 5:30h to 6h SoT. But I rarely use my phone that much. And I've noticed battery drain by google play services. Going thru OP forums, there seems to be wi-fi bug in Oxygen OS which causes this. Disabling wi-fi gives me really great standby times, and battery is great like that. Since I have flat LTE connection, I am using my phone without wi-fi atm.

But like anyone else, I need wi-fi. I want my phone and my mac on same wi-fi connection. So waiting for a fix, and apparently, OP is working on it as I write this. I just hope that it comes sooner then later :)

But I am using 2 sim cards in OP5, bluetooth is always on (my car, my mac + airpods, something is always connected). Brightness is on auto mode, and still, I can really get great battery life. Only problem is wi-fi draining battery if I leave my phone for some time in standby mode.

Well, during the weekend I've managed to take my family on a small trip down to south of Croatia, to a place called Makarska. I've created a few pictures, and I've selected a few to show here publicly.

Bare in mind that I am a complete photo noob, and I have no interest in photography what so ever. Only take pictures of my kids, and even that happens rarely :)

All photos are taken in auto mode, just pure 'n' simple point and click style.

Album is here:

I've snatched a quick video for people interested in how OP5 does with video, so here is a 30sec video:

To be honest, OP5 does a great job. At least for me. And I've seen my brother manage to get some great sunset photos with this device, but with manual mode. I couldn't believe that this phone could take pictures like that, but it can.

Once again, these were made by me, a guy with zero interest in photography, and zero skills to accommodate that claim :)

Not the best with night time shots, but good grief it nails it in daylight! Great photos! Thanks for sharing.

Indeed. I have no issues with wi-fi (5GHz) connectivity anymore. At least for now. As far as standby power goes, I will see in the next couple of days how the phone behaves.

Oohhhh someone please test the 4K video EIS.....

I shot that one quickly. The upload didn't go with 4k resolution (I did it straight from the phone), but I guess it still shows that the stabilization did quite a good job considering I was just holding the phone in one hand while walking. When I was looking at the phone screen while recording, it was a real shakefest compared to the end result.

Apparently, OP will introduce new color to OP5. Probably white, or gold, or combination of both. But my money is on red :)

That looks good enough for me, honestly. The only thing I ever use my phone for are pics/videos of my kids. That would work just fine. I'm torn between this guy and the HTC U11 and the OP5 is leading the way for me right now.

I had a chance to use HTC U11. I plan on purchasing that phone as well in the near future. Waiting for prices to drop, or a good deal online... HTC U11 has better photos then OP5 for sure. But not by much. Of course, just my opinion, but I am no photo expert so take my statement with a grain of salt.

What I dislike about HTC U11 is the glass back. I never use any cases, and I do drop my phones from time to time. HTC U11 is slippery as hell. But other then that, I find that phone to be great. That is the reason I will purchase one, use it until I get bored, and then resell :)

Yuk that compressions awful, but it doesn't look like you were walking! More like floating! Damn that's impressive stabilisation, the thing just keeps getting better and better! Will be incredibly interesting seeing this taking on the new Pixel and Note 8... especially considering the cost!

Thanks for that. I honestly think I'm going with the OP5. After SD card, the U11 is a good $150 more expensive right now. And to be honest, this is a placeholder for the Pixel 2 or iPhone 8. :)

Well at least I've been happy with mine. HTC would be officially waterproof and its camera is slightly better, but on the other hand it's still somewhat more expensive and their update pace leaves room for improvement.
