Oh don't get me wrong, the S8 is absolutely stunning as I'm sure most would agree. It didn't bother me that it was bezel-less it didn't hinder me in any way. The back fingerprint scanner did, but I didn't like it on Pixel either. I just prefer them on the front, or even the side like Sony often does. Although I know in America they leave the scanner out for some reason I read the other day and now can't remember. Thankfully us Brits get it!

The trend seems to be to move away from bezels so that's likely what we will see going forward by most companies.
Those are my thoughts too. Going forward you will see more and more bezel less phones.
My only issues with the S8+ was the FPS location and how narrow it is. Even the G6 feels narrow to me.

I think the S8 looks really cool. Very futuristic even. But for me, it isn't really functional. You still have to reach for the top of the screen. And those curved edges make media look strange to me. I like the G6 implementation better. But I don't think it makes other things look outdated. It's just another option to me.

Third update before I've had this phone for a week :)

Yeah, I just don't get the "IF IT HAS BEZELS THEN IT'S A CRAP PHONE" mentality that people all of the sudden have. For one, it makes the phone strange to hold, as you're literally touching screen everywhere. And two, even the S8 is a two handed phone for me. I still either have to shimmy my hand up the phone to reach anything on the top of the phone or use a second hand. Sure, it looks kind of cool, but I don't think it makes phones that aren't bezel-less look outdated at all.

It's because you can get a larger screen in a smaller package. I do agree that the new 18:9 ratio that everyone is doing sucks, but you would have to shimmy up your phone anyway so I don't get that point, in fact you now have to shimmy sideways as well with that older phone. I know it's just opinion, but anything with humungous bezels like the iPhone or pixel looks ancient to me, like it was dug out of an archaeological site.

The G6 has a MUCH better implementation than the s8, agreed. I would have liked the G6 to be a bit wider though.

Exactly... My pixel is as large (physical size) as I would ever want a phone to be. I do not like large phones like the iPhone 7+ and OnePlus 5 but I do like the larger screen. So if I can get my larger screen in a physical package the same or smaller then my pixel then that is great. Smaller bezel phones will be the new standard moving forward so to release a "flagship" phone without that feature is not something I would be interested in. Plus as stated in the quote, large bezel phones look ancient now IMO.

Well, after wanting the last two iterations but not biting I went in on the midnight black 8gb RAM/128 gb storage (duh...how could you not order that version with a $60 difference??). Supposed to arrive tomorrow. I even switched to Tmobile from VZW for the device! (I'll go to ATT if TMo doesn't work for me. So far though I've gotten crazy data speeds on their network at home and work that VZW can't match).

I love the speed and customization options for the OP. I'm looking forward to a "more interesting version" of the Pixel. ;)

Awesome! Can't wait to read your thoughts! For the $60 difference the black 128GB is a great deal.
It seems like OPO is pushing out updates to the phone pretty fast to adjust to any problems too.

I have been very impressed by that, incidentally. I know last year when the 3 was released there was a RAM management issue that they fixed, although I don't know how long it took them. Seems they're responsive to reported issues.

Right now I am really really digging Tmo service though as a side benefit. Super impressed. I tend to use my phone a great deal for PHONE CALLS so we'll see how they hold up on that end.

A week in and I'm happy with mine :) Some odd glitches here and there, but it's a new phone and OnePlus has been pushing out updates, so I expect those small issues to be sorted out. By the way, @MRU which apps would you like me to test regarding memory management?

My main apps I utilise and usually have in memory / Backgrounded are

Tapatalk
Google Play Music
Google Play Newstand
YouTube
Google Photos
Facebook
Chrome (with maybe 1 tab open)
Gmail
Stock Calendar
Stock Messenger
Stock Dialer
Stock Gallery

Then FitBit is usually there too syncing my Blaze.

Nothing too crazy like games. But even with latest updates on my S8 I can barely keep half of those in ram without forced content refreshes.

Reviews say it’s keeping about 20 apps in RAM so I don’t see there being any issues.

I really wanna get this phone but the so so camera is putting me off.
Yep, didn't notice any major refreshes when toggling between apps in a similar set. YouTube just buffered a little before resuming playback.

Youtube will always buffer, no matter the phone or ram on that phone. It has to. But the app itself won't refresh.

My op5 should arrive by monday. 64gb version, since I really don't need 128gb of storage :)

That's what I would get. I actually prefer the slate colour. Would you test similar for me. Thanks

@MRU
I will test everything + my own additional apps - Facebook.
I don't have a FB account. I hate FB, so I will never own a facebook account. And their app will never get on my phone :p

P.S.
Yea, hate is a strong word. But when expressing my opinions on FB, that's the first word that comes to mind :D

So what's the consensus on the camera? I realize we are at a point where most phones have very good cameras now. But is this one THAT much noticeably worse than say the S8 or iPhone 7? Or is it just worse when you zoom in and do shots under tricky/bad lighting?

I really want to try this phone out but having just got an S8+ for $575 I'm unsure if I should bother with this one or not. I've never owned an OP phone.

Well, at least I can live with the camera. There are some samples from me earlier in this thread, but two different updates with camera improvements have been released after I took those pics, so there could be some improvement, too.

Got the phone today. Had so many good initial impressions and then...wifi started dropping like crazy. I'd reset it, boom - kept happening. I updated to the latest patch that is supposed to address wifi issues but still no luck. Unless there's an obvious reasonable fix I'm missing, it's gonna go back. I can deal with quirks, but not connectivity issue.

SO. I will say this after a few hours other than the above:

- it does *not* look like an iPhone. Its a slab with dual cameras but people are working this comment way too hard. Feels better in the hand than iPhone 7 Plus imo.

- Yes, it is insanely fast. Fluid, responsive. This thing flies and makes using Android a pleasure. Doesn't have the bells and whistles of an S8 but it's performance runs rings around it. Can't stress enough how sick-fast this phone is.

- Screen is excellent. I have an S8 Plus, you gotta work really hard to see the difference. Colors are a tiny less vibrant, that's about all I could tell.

- Camera seems fine. Nowhere near enough time with it t judge, and I'm not a big photo hound anyway. It's super fast to load and to take a pic. I can get quick, good pics of my dogs so it seems it meets at least my criteria for a shooter.

- Loooove Oxygen OS. Flexibility is fantastic. Being able to turn off annoying icons, for example. Assigning different actions to the navigation bar is great.

- FPS. Best. I've. Ever. Used. Period. Wow wow wow. Samsung should be embarrassed as sh*t.

So yeah, I'm bummed about the wifi issue. As you can tell I was quite enjoying the phone.

Have you tried splitting your WiFi so it broadcasts 2.4 & 5 GHz seperatly and then connect via 2 4 GHz instead with the phone. I believe it's 5 GHz band the issue is related to.

Yup. Had the same thought. No go.
