OnePlus 6 to copy the "notch"?

I have no idea why OnePlus would try to copy the "notch" on the upcoming OnePlus 6.
It seems they would rather copy than innovate themselves. Having a notch eliminates display space...but at a cost of functionality. Like the iPhone X notch eliminated room for a battery percentage indicator.
I just don't get it.....

On the plus side it looks like it has a glass back so maybe it will have wireless charging?

That notch looks utterly ugly. Like some kid clumsily cut the shape out of cardboard.

There's just no thought that goes into those products. Aesthetically the iPhone X seems to be untouchable. Much like the iPhone 4 was back in its day. Looked better, felt better, performed better.

It's almost like Apple does these things to troll other companies to see if they'll do it too lol. First the headphone jack going away, then that hideous notch... Do these companies realize just because Apple does it doesn't mean it's a good idea?

I’m getting really disgusted with the Android side of things for this. I really love my Pixel 2 but I know Google is following Apple and almost copying Apple keynotes from a template. And removing the headphone jack on phones that have plenty of room left for the jack...and not including USB-C headphones but still charging a premium. Yeah, I know what they’re doing but I bought one anyway for reasons I’ve already posted many times. That doesn’t mean I agree with copycatting Apple. The crap Apple does pull is the reason I am becoming less in their thrall and seeking viable alternatives.

But when the alternatives seek to become cheap copies, ugh. It’s sickening.

I was half done with Samsung due to dissatisfaction with my S8+ but they’re reeling me in with the fact that another year on, they seem more determine to shake the “Samesung” image for their flagships and keep their commitment to their distinctive notch-free look and the still-appreciated headphone jack. Good on Motorola for doing mostly the same, though I would have appreciated them not dropping the headphone jack. But in their case I can see why they did it, somewhat.

Anyway it just kills me knowing that when Apple comes up with something harebrained, somebody on the Android side will copy it. At least Apple has a reason for this design...they’ve got the dot projector to accommodate. What is the excuse from these sad copycats?

Couldn't agree more.....Apple removes functionality to enhance profits. Then these clowns clone those deigns just for the sake of trying to be like the cool kid on the block so to speak.....

Whilst I completely understand that companies all borrow from each other and the industry pushes forward by building on ideas or concepts set by someone else by improving on them etc, this is kinda sad.

Particularly when the 'notch' doesn't really add anything to the function of these Android devices. Sure, Apple have a good reason to have the notch and from owning the X, it was something that never bothered me at all. I actually liked that swiping from the right side of it brought up Control Panel etc.

But with the Android devices doing the same thing, I can't really understand why. People are not buying iPhone's because of the notch. If that were the case, then I'd be right on board with the companies copying it. Why not get involved?
But who bought the X because of the notch? No one, I presume.

Why these companies can't actually look to steal the things that matter to people, like how Google's software gives them fantastic post image processing, or squeezy sides that can be remapped to other phone functions is beyond me. These things are all innovative ideas that would help the market grow further if others took the concept and pushed it further. Instead, we just get this. Blatant rip offs.

If anything, it puts me off buying a device with a notch (a device that isn't an X I mean) as it just appears a bit desperate and cheap.

Well said! I wish I could give you more than one upvote.

I just noticed that they appeared to also have copied the awful camera bump from the X, too.

When I had the X that bump was far more of an annoyance to me than the notch ever was. I could ignore the notch most of the time. But that bump...and the way it is designed allows dust to infiltrate the housing and get onto the camera lens. Fortunately it didn’t happen to mine but plenty of other forum members had that problem. Also, thanks to poor design, red-eye was a persistent problem in flash photos. I am shocked that for all of the emphasis Apple puts on the camera, that this problem wasn’t caught during testing of prototypes.

Actually, looking at the copycat, their designers appear to have improved on Apple’s mistake. But the goal should be to make these camera bumps flatter. Not everyone wants to use a case. Poor design should not make it a necessity. That camera bump made me nervous. Good case designs did mitigate it but every time I had it out of the case at home, I had to be very careful how I set it down. I often set it down on the display because I had a glass protector on the display but nothing for the camera glass.

There’s a lot to like about the X but the camera bump and the notch are the weirdest choices to emulate.

Agreed, all notches are hideous, they are a perfect example of form over function.
If all phones go notch, I'll have no choice but it'll be a cold day in hell when I buy a phone with a notch.

Well.... Apple removes functionality which reduces costs and increases profits and they aren't being hurt by doing that. It just makes good business sense for Android manufacturers to follow suit.

I'm hoping that by the time I'm ready to move on from my iPhone SE that some "enterprising" Android maker will be "courageous" and offer a phone with removable battery, microSD card slot, headphone jack, and rectangular (no-notch) screen.

Hopefully, it's fake but maybe desperate times call for desperate measures. I think the final nail in the coffin for OnePlus is customers discovering it lacks Widevine certification for playing DRM HD content so no HD Google Play Movies, Netflix, Amazon Videos, etc.

On a side note, it's funny companies are competing to make the notch smaller. Essential Phone was first out of the gate with the smallest notch. And, isn't the end goal making it so small that it's notchless? So, back to square one. A solution in search of a problem.

There are often times I do look back at my life with smartphones and think even with far fewer functions, I did enjoy smartphones more a few years ago. They were more practical in design and materials, and that helped even though they were far less powerful than what we have now. But they did basically the same things then that they do now. We were content with them because at the time they were state of the art.

There have been some really uncomfortable compromises made in design, materials and user interfaces to bring us this current vision of “the future”, which is actually only the present and not likely to last beyond a backlash and a return to durability and functionality.

Is it? Compared to the S6 the S9 isn't as exciting since every off-shore phone, Apple, etc. are borrowing the design. It's bad and good, though, as you can a budget phone that looks like the latest Galaxy.

To my eyes the iPhone X is the ugliest phone Apple has ever made. The cameras look awkward, it doesn't feel particularly good to hold, and the colors are faded and gross behind all the finger prints.
