2014 MBA to 2020 M1 MBP

I purchased a 13" MBP back in August, but returned it due to excessive heating doing even relatively simple tasks (literally couldn't sit with it on my lap at times). This M1 has almost NEVER gotten warm. I think the fan kicked on once when I was syncing a lot of backup files to the new system. It's been dead silent and cool ever since. Amazing.

My M1 MacBook Pro arrives next Monday. Coming from a MacBook Pro 15" from 2014. Used it for 5 years nearly every day. Never let me down. But it's getting slower and the fans are mostly on.

I'm coming from a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, which I think was the very last design with user upgradeable RAM and hard drives. It's served me well as I upgraded to 16 GB of RAM and a 500 GB hard drive. I don't run a lot of CPU intensive programs, so the older processor hasn't been a large hindrance.

What drew me to the M1 MBA was the fact that I couldn't upgrade MACOS on my old computer (and wanted to get on Big Sur), and wanted to dip my toes into the Apple Silicon waters.

So far, I've been extremely happy with my base model MBA.

Replacing the missus' 2013 hand-me-down MacBook Air with a base M1 MacBook Air. Its going to be way more than she needs. It's in the house as a Christmas present, but I'm not allowed to play with it whoops I mean set it up until after Christmas Day.

For me I'm waiting for the iMac M! to come out and replace my 2017, 27" with 24GB of memory.

early 2020 MBP i5 -> M1 MBA 8-core 16gb 1TB SSD

I've been a MB Air guy for many years. Was excited last spring for the quad core i5 MBA and ordered one on the first day. Too much fan noise and performance wasn't any better than the 2018 MBA it was replacing. So I returned it and bought the 2020 MBP. That has very good performance but also too much fan noise, plus I have a strong preference for physical Fn keys over the Touch Bar. So I'm selling the early 2020 MBP as soon as I finish setting up the M1 MBA. I'll lose money, but the benefits to me of moving back to the MBA form factor, losing the TB, having a quiet fanless machine and much longer battery life are worth it to me.

I was using an old 2011 MBA 13" a1369 with i5 and 128GB SSD with a HengeDock docking station and an old Dell E248WFP 1080p LCD monitor that ran Catalina Patcher 10.15.7. I docked my iPhone as a hotspot for the MBA so it could access the Internet while I was at the office. I've since upgraded to a M1 Mac Mini with 8GB / 256GB SSD and couldn't be happier.

Overall the M1 is faster and quieter than my old 2011 MBA and I am very satisfied! 👍

I bought an MacBook Air, 8GB RAM and 512SSD.
this is to replace an old 2011 MacBook Pro running Windows 10 64bits because latest macOS is not supported and also replace my iPad 6th gen.
Yeah replace iPad because I was using this device 99% of the time with a keyboard... I realize I was using my iPad more just because of the good battery. MacBook Air is already better than my iPad for the battery... so all is good for me.

Have a 16" MBP that I used as my only computer for 4K editing as well as general stuff until getting the new iMac this year.

I do the majority of editing on the iMac now so the 16 MBP is for sale & I got the base M1 MBA for times where i need to be mobile.

Who can be more embarrassing than me?

I’m coming from a 2008 iMac!

I’ve almost pushed the button on numerous occasions, but just never bothered. However, these new M1 Macs look solid.

So, what system are you coming from?

Coming off a late-2009 21” Core 2 Duo iMac. Also thought about pulling the trigger many times. Last couple years the wife stopped me...Thank you!

MBP with 24” monitor. Also waiting on the Lappy, everything else is here. I’m sure it’s more machine than the family needs today, but here’s to another 10+years before I have to think about it again. 😁

BTW, the old iMac replaced my college aluminum PowerBook G4. I’ve successfully covered the processor gamut to date.

I have a 2016 Macbook m5 8gb I'm trading in towards the base M1 Air. With all the Zoom's I've been doing not only does 480p not work anymore but it's too underpowered to use any of the video filters that Zoom offers. Additionally, t's too slow when I have lots of things open in meetings.

I bought the M1 (MBP) as a backup for my MBP 16, fully specced. For my very specific workflow, the M1 outperformed the MBP 16 on every task. Now the MBP 16 is the backup for my M1. Does that answer your question :)?

I have a 2019 16" MacBook Pro and got a M1 Air (16gb).

It's really impressive so far and certainly quite fast! Battery life is my major thing and it doesn't disappoint. I've always wanted a smaller form factor computer that is great on performance. Lack of fans is really nice.

My major conundrum is lack of support for some major software I use (Docker mainly, but is coming soon) and if I'm ready to give up Windows via Parallels. I think it's time to just have a separate Windows computer or remote in if/when I need it.

From a 2012 13" MacBook Pro to M1 13" MacBook Pro 16gb, 1 Tera.
So far I love the speed and Battery life.
So far I miss the magnetic charger cord and older iWorks.

Upgrading from a 2015 MacBook Air. For my workflow the 2015 model was still doing “all right” but I was looking for to a faster computer since 1-2 years already, the M1 was the perfect occasion to upgrade. Really enjoying having more than 128GB storage as well! 🥳
