Please keep this thread focused on ordering, shipping, and receiving your 27 inch iMacs late 2015. It's not about connections for peripherals that don't exist or some world where you can get a desktop equivalent GPU in an all in one. No, this is for ordering, shipping and receiving. Plenty of other threads about those issues. (Although I find the RAM discussion intriguing, someone pointed out you can't even get 16gb sims. So that's moot too. If it takes ddr-4, intriguing, but inconsequential.

So again, list what you ordered!

Well, based on the fact that you seem to be still working on a 2007 iMac and didn't so far have enough pressure that you upgraded to a 2013 or 2014 iMac, I'll predict you'll be pretty happy with the non-upgraded 3.2 GHz CPU. Your system will be so much more snappy than the 2007 iMac that you will be a very happy one. Just make sure that you choose an iMac with at least a Fusion Drive, but you seem to go to pure SSD, which improves general speed much more than the CPU choice, given that you are no power user based on your post.

You will be giving yourself a nice Christmas present. There are some problems with this iMac edition (see the various posts, including mine just above), but as far as I can judge your situation, I think you'll be very happy.

I nevertheless suggest to invest in AppleCare - of the 4 iMacs I had so far, 2 died of thermal problems, and last year's edition had severe heat issues - we don't know about this late-2015 edition.

Edit: maybe this will give some more details wrt the CPU difference - it will be HUGE, even for the 3.2 GHz model - I think you have the Intel Core2Duo E6600 @2.4 GHz:
http://www.techspot.com/article/1039-ten-years-intel-cpu-compared/
Thanks for the breakdown and link. I'm pretty happy with my purchase (I posted what I got above) and per your suggestion I did get AppleCare. For what I use it for this iMac should be fun to use and good for a long, long time.

Although benchmarks will be coming out soon, would the M380 survive playing Starcraft 2 (4v4 multiplayer) and light use of blender with general ease (given appropriate settings)? This is my only predicament.

Edit: or should I just spring for the 390?

You guys surely have nervous triggerfingers…. ;-)

After the heat/throttling/noise-gate of the last RiMac you're ordering before anything is out there concerning these issues?

I'll most probably plan to go with a i7-6700K, 16 GB, 512 GB and the M395X, PROVIDED the heat issue is not as dramatic as with the Rev.1 RiMacs. I'd like to replace my 2010 21.5" iMac

I am still unhappy with the offering - I think not only does Apple milk the customers (which I find a morally repulsive strategy, given their enormous pile of cash they are sitting on and not paying an adequate amount of taxes for, compared to other companies…), it's just clearly in the sun to see for everyone that Apple follows an upselling strategy… driving people to spend more than they actually would like, to remedy some of the biggest 'bad design' issues, such as the 5400 rpm HDD which is still standard in the lower models.

But even the lion in the iMac jungle is not resoundingly convincing. No Thunderbolt 3, no USB-C, no SSD (ok, a 2 TB Fusion Drive, at last) - and an GPU I don't know what the advantages are wrt the M295X. We have PC laptops out there with desktopgrade GPUs, why not have an Apple desktop with a desktopgrade GPU?

Ah sorry, I forgot, we absolutely need these thin edges…. I'm still working on my 2010 iMac today which has approx. 1" sides… it has a tremendous negative impact on my workspace environment and general wellbeing… ;-)

Problem was with the first Retina iMac was the fact that the screen was right on the edge of what the GPU could support - once you moved beyond basic operations then things turn to crud pretty quickly. It isn't new to Apple, same thing happened when they launched the first MacBook Pro with Retina display with the HD 3000 pretty much at the edge of what it could support then when hardware accelerated UI effects were thrown onboard or wanting to play a mid level game then things would tun to crud quickly. There is a reason why I avoid 1.0 products like the plague - lets someone else take the hit and wait for 1.1 to come around with most of the bugs fixed up. In the case of me, I'm holding off till 3D XPoint makes an appearance along side DDR4 becoming mainstream before do any upgrading because right now I have a late 2013 iMac 27" and it does the job fine.

Not at 5K. Downscaled to 2560x1440 you might be okay.

On another note, I can't wait to see all the thermal throttling issues the i7 4.0GHz + M395X combination has. Everyone reckons Skylake will fix this issue. I bet it will improve it a bit, but any demanding task on GPU or CPU will still cause throttling.

I've taken the plunge on the top spec base model; I've been waiting for an update and mercilessly lurking on these forums since the 1st gen RiMac and simply can't wait any longer. First time iMac user, I've been a Windows user since our family computer stopped being our Amiga 1000 (loved that computer...!). With a mate's employee discount it came down to $3200AUD

Well pulled the trigger.

I've got a soon to be gone educational status and the price isn't going to drop much before next October.

Hardware
  • 4.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.2GHz
  • 8GB 1867MHz DDR3 SDRAM - two 4GB
  • 512GB Flash Storage
  • AMD Radeon R9 M395X with 4GB video memory
  • Magic Trackpad 2
  • Magic Keyboard (British) & User’s Guide (English)
  • Accessory Kit
Any ideas what's in the accessory kit and are there any extras thrown in with the education purchase?

Got a MBP three years ago and it came with a £50 credit for the app store.

Ignoring the whole mouse/trackpad discussion this seems to be a rather popular configuration.

Here's the logic of it. Most of us spending this amount of money on this machine are doing it because we need the power -- and that includes the pwoer of having a screeen that will handle 4K video and RAW images. Whether filmmakers, graphic designers, photographers, architects, whatever. So it makes sense that we need the best CPU and video card we can get. The i7 is multithreaded with 8 virtual cores -- great for compressing video. The 395x with 4GB memory is essential for effects and graphics of any sort. The 512SSD is the best balance between price/performance as the 1TB is too dear for many of us. In terms of trackpad versus mouse, my choice comes down to my workspace and I imagine others does as well. The RAM, of course, we can upgrade later. I think the sweet spot is 2 additional 8GB sticks to bring you up to a total of 24GB RAM. Going up to 32 means chucking the 2X4GB that is in there and isn't worth it IMHO.

I Was thinking on getting the same but with 256 SSD since I'll be getting a 5 TB external usb 3.0. But I might just pull the trigger and get the same as you. I'm just waiting B&H getting them so I can buy and save 250 dollars in taxes. I can buy the external and 16 GB ram with that money!!

Exactly, I am a Graphic Designer and I spent the extra money to future proof this machine for up to 5 years!

Don't cheap out on your HDD when you are this close. Bump up to the 512SSD and in a year you can thank me as even it gets close to full with files and programs you want instant access to. If money is that tight, then wait on the RAM upgrade and external until next year sometime.

Just ordered 27" i7 3TB Fusion R9 8GB RAM M395X Magic Trackpad 2 Apple Care

Ordered a Logitech MX Master too, and 4x8GB DDR3@1866

Your going to spend $2000-$3000 and are worried about "chucking" 2 little chunks of ram, worth $43 (owc price) total new to get matching ram at a reasonable price?

(sorry a bit off topic, but . . )
