Why should they rename it from OS X to something else? It is a big brand for now, why change that? It is a "household" name in a way, just like iOS is. That would be kind of stupid to do, unless it is a radical new version, which is still five plus years away.

Didn't they just do the whole renaming thing? Big cats to Mavericks?

Yes they did. The people who think there will be some huge difference in naming since we are getting to 10.10 are mostly the people who don't realize that version numbers are not decimal, and can in fact go past 10.10.

Guess the final name for OS X 10.10

I'm genuinely intrigued as to what Apple might choose now they've changed the naming convention, i'm not a California native but perhaps people could speculate (5 months till probable preview at WWDC) on potential names.

Mavericks has quite a nice dual meaning for this release, breaking the mould for free OS distribution etc...amongst other features.

Bonus point if someone guesses correct...!

OS X Sequoia (mountains/climbing higher and higher)

OS X Mojave (self-reflection in the desert)

It looks like Apple is picking less well-known places, though, so it might be some random mountain or beach. Hoping for something snowy/mountainous though... would love a beautiful new wallpaper. Maverick's wallpaper is kitschy, loved ML's wallpaper though.

Apple's OS X UI guidelines state that OS X icons should not just be iOS icons.

Also not sure why the time is in the middle of the menu bar.

iOS shots don't look any different, other than the dock.

I am aware, and my guidelines state that consistency enhances comfortability.

Also not sure why the time is in the middle of the menu bar.

For the same reason the menu bar is at the top of the screen.

And the status bar. See answer one.

Actually discuss.

It artificially limits the number of menu options a program can have or the number of menu bar icons, though. On an 11" MacBook Air, I already have menus from apps like PHPStorm disappearing under icons. This design would cut it off before it even reached the icons.

The clock works so well in the middle of the iOS status bar because there's a limited number of indicators that need to go up there. On a Mac, it's going to require re-thinking how many things really need to live in the menu bar and where else they could go. I'm just not sure it's worth the trade-off just to make the operating systems match.

I find it interesting, though not particularly in a good way;), that your concept simply makes OS X look *exactly* like iOS... why not the other way around?

...as Fishrrman mentioned above, I don't want to do my work on a "mobile OS". What's with this obsession that both OSes should look identical? They already share more than a few similarities, but they both have a completely different purpose. Arekusandaa don't take this personally, this can be indeed an interesting discussion. :)

I would really like the new Mac OS to look like that... Simple and modern...

Plus, the picture shows it's using Helvetica for default font :)

I think they both look great. The Mac OS icons need labeling though.

I considered including labels for the OS X icons, but the ability to hover with the arrow in an input environment vs a touch justifies leaving them out, as is the case with OS X currently.

There are several options for this. In the current version of OS X there is overlap between application menu bar items and window icons that can be removed. Application menu bar options can also be carried out by trackpad or mouse gesture. The application menu can be reduced to one drop-down menu with essential options rather than several.

No.

Leave Ios -out of- the Mac OS.

My opinion only.

Why?

I first made concepts using OS X Mavericks and iOS 6 icons respectively, but decided not to keep them. I dislike most of the iOS 7 icons, however, so I intend to replace them once I find or create alternate minimal icons.

You did a great job making that but NO! PLEASE NO. I want OS X to look like it does now. I just don't like it on a computer and I love iOS 7 more then anyone else on this planet. Please take a look at this thread to.https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1708315/

See above.

People like TC are the reason Lion happened, and that the once great Mac OS X became simply OS X.

The original moniker was always too derivative, and the current one is even more so. Something numinous would be better. The ambiguities of the UI have also always been inefficient.

10.10: My feature list.

Below is my feature list for 10.10.

- Redesigned Icons to match iOS. (So new iPhone users can easily use OS X)
- More optimization to the tags feature.
- Smoother Finder "full screen" animation.

- New "Desktop" app/launcher, for when Finder is in full screen. (Command Tab doesn't bring you to the desktop when Finder is in full screen.)

- "Light Content" as the default theme. (The Light Content theme is available as a setting in Interface Builder)

- Better iCloud browser integration, like the features available on Windows via iCloud Control Panel.

Obvious: Snappier Safari.

A filesystem change won't happen until OS 11, which I think will be a complete rewrite to integrate OS 11 around the filesystem.
