Apple phone support were helpful. Reset the PRAM by booting while holding the Cmd-Opt-P-R keys. So far this seems to have fixed my freezes. Need to run more checks of the optical drive.
Turns out my HD was failing (it was one subject to "recall" by Apple) and this seems to be the cause of my EC woes. All working fine now, including USB and external optical drive. I guess the extra disk work for installing EC tipped the balance for a dodgy HD.

Hi Guys.

Since transitioning to El Capitan I'm having trouble with mounting network volumes.

Specifically, if I browse to a network computer using the sidebar and mount a drive from there, when i later unmount that drive, I am unable to mount it again. Im given the error “The operation cant be completed because the original item for [drive name] cant be found”

If I then navigate to the network drive a different way, using the Finder Menu -> Go -> Connect To Server, then I am able to mount that drive one more time. If I again unmount it, then this method wont work again either giving the same error.

The only way to be able to access those specific drives again it seems to to log out and log back in.

This happens on ALL El Capitan systems that I work with- 3 x 2013 Mac Pros, 1 x 2014 Mac Pro, 1 x 2011 iMac and 2009 Mac Book Pro, and it happens at 2 separate locations, meaning separate networks. It happens on El Capitan systems mounting drives from other El Capitan and Yosemite systems, haven't tried anything older.

Ive experimented with SMB and AFP in the sharing preferences but haven't been able to change the behavior.

Anyone have the same or similar issue? It has me stumped...

I got the same problem, but I get the error when I try to browse my Time Capsule. Haven't got the time to investigate in detail but I think there's a problem with the permissions.
Check this thread:
http://apple.itsprite.com/applethe-...ause-the-original-item-for-foo-cant-be-found/

Another strange thing is that when I hit "ls -la /Volumes/" I see two mounts of the same drive, first named "Disk" and the other one "Disk-1".
Then I try "mount" in terminal I see:
//username@TimeCapsule...../Disk on /Volumes/Disk-1 (afpfs, nodev, nosuid, mounted by username)
//username@TimeCapsule...../Disk on /Volumes/Disk (afpfs, nobrowse)

And there's probably the problem, the nobrowse setting.

Cool. Let me check it out, thanks!

Does anyone have the issue, where when you close a PDF in preview that had been in split or full screen you then can not open another PDF without force quitting preview. I you find another PDF in finder click on it, it does the quick animation as if the file has opened but it does not open. Preview is really poor in El Cap and has been giving me many issues.

Looks like you solved it. I had "Ignore ownership on this volume' selected in the Get Info window for various drives on the networked computers. I unchecked this, clicked "Apply to enclosed items" and the issue is gone. Permission problems indeed.

Thanks again, you rock.

Updates can be tailored to specific Mac model/revision, this might be the case. And we haven't actually "got the same hardware", there are quite a lot of HW combinations in Apple computers.

It looks like something dreadful happened to engineering divisions of Apple. Like markedroids taking over QC/release management.
********
If the OSX and the updates can truly be, as you say, "tailored to specific Mac models", then I finally understand why El Capitan worked so entirely wrong on my Mac Pro late 2013, that for the first time in my life I had to make a downgrade.
I must have received the 10.11 and the 10.11.1 versions tailored for the iPhone ! ;)
Thanks for explaining it. :D

Interesting: I happen to have the same nMP config as yours, only with D700s – and El Capitan was "so entirely wrong" for me too. Also ended in the first downgrade I've done ever.

Any place but here or there....
In and around intermittent beach balls (spinning wheels whatever.) I keep having the iTunes HDCP play back issue and having to reset the display from default to scaled. AppleCare tech completely made that worse going into Safe Mode (which my 5k iMac hates apparently.) And now another AC rep had me create a second user id to see if I was still having these issues.

 For almost $3k this is more than a bit ridiculous.

what about submitting a bug report? not trying to shoot oyu down though, i agree that apple has indeed completley slipped up making its OS annoying even if some of the things are not considered 'bugs'.

and the erase / restore of El Capitan did squat insofar as the spinning wheel with Apple's own dvd player and registering a third party app. I can understand seeing these on a lower specced machine but am now wondering if this 27" iMac is worth keeping.

My worry if I return this and get a Mac Mini, I'll probably see as many beach balls as I do on my 2010 iMac. Apple's software sucks and they really need to step up to the plate and get this stabilized across the board. Time to look into the terminal commands to see exactly what is eating that memory.

I've been noticing an annoying quirk with copying files and folders - once the copy is done, the destination copy is still greyed out in Finder. I can open it fine, at which time it becomes "black" or I can navigate back and then forward (basically refresh the window) and it'll be black. More of a nuisance quirk than anything, really.

Anyone having a problem with Twitter's web version hanging up?

Getting some hanging up throughout Safari.

This has been by far the WORST update I've had with Apple to date.

Font Book is so incredibly buggy that it becomes unusable half of the time. I have lots of fonts because I'm a Designer and It just doesn't seem to handle it very well.

Anyone have the same or similar issue? It has me stumped...

The only option u have not tried is clean install..

I use NAS as home and on 10.11.1, tried what u explained, and it works for me from the sidebar all the time.

Mine is not an upgrade, but a clean install.. (I never upgrade operating systems for this very reason, things will break) u do not get on a clean install, but if u do a clean install and same issue i would then say it's the OS, but only after you've tried a clean install.

From my perspective all issues can be solved from a clean install. I had issues with iOS for the because i decided to upgrade.... bad move on my part. and a restore fixed any issue i was having.

Problem is most people don't do this because it takes time, even with time machine or other data backup. But it pays off in the end.

My Spotlight search box has shrunk (see screenshot).

hehe.. dinky...

same as above. Spotlight appears ok here.

Yeah, I think a clean install is a great idea, and Im a firm believer in doing this in general, thought its very difficult due to the huge amount of audio software, libraries, and authorizations we have to go through. Some software would have to be repurchased or best case we contact the developer to reset our authorization seats. Not to mention the downtime.

However, I actually got a new Macbook Pro yesterday, so ill be able to test a fresh system out.

Still, this issue has been happening on 5+ systems over 2 x networks. They can't all need clean installs.... Must be some of the software we use that is bugging things out...Logic or some music software based process. Guess most people other than us are not having the problem.

Is anyone having problems with mouse lag? I'm using the bluetooth Magic Mouse, and it works just fine in Windows 10 and Ubuntu, only El Capitán has this problem.
Yup - me too. Just updated from Yosemite which was working perfectly and now have an unuseable laggy magic mouse and temperamental keyboard....not good

Since updating to the latest update to El Capitain, yesterday, the original install couple of weeks ago was fine, I'm getting a constant (as in every minute or so) Problem Report box coming up on screen, it's a complete and utter pain in the butt!! It's for suggestd, whatever that is! And it makes no difference what apps I have open at the time.

Here's the headline bit from the fault report:

Process: suggestd [1675]
Path: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreSuggestions.framework/Versions/A/Support/suggestd
Identifier: suggestd
Version: 1.0 (354.10)
Code Type: X86-64 (Native)
Parent Process: ??? [1]
Responsible: suggestd [1675]

Anyone any idea what / how to stop / etc

Any help appreciated.
