Question about battery and power of our old computers - how to bypass the Apple "overconsumption protection"

I have the MBP2,2 battery dead. If I use Geekbench 3 with it, I get a benchmark of about 537 (single processor, 32-bit). If I use the good battery from my MBP3,1 into my MBP2,2 I get a benchmark of about 1008.

It's supposed this is done by Apple to protect the computer to shutdown while working, because the Magsafe has less power than the power the Mac could need in some situations. So, Apple downclocks the CPU to the half of its real/nominal speed.
The reality, I have a 85W Magsafe and if I reproduce a 1080 HD video (on my El Capitan MBP3,1) I get a real power drain of only about 49 W with full brightness, WIFI...
So, I think Apple does this to have us thinking we need a new Mac because ours is old and slow, not because of a supposed overconsumption situation.

This affects to Yosemite, El Capitan, (I think) older versions of OS X... and even BootCamp Windows 10. So, I suppose this is done by SMC and not by OS X.

Is there some way to bypass this overconsumption protection and get full benchmark with a dead battery? Or the only solution is buying a new one?

Thank you very much,

UPDATED: BEST SOLUTION
Buy a new battery. Although you can get something done (modifying some .plist from some kexts), it's not perfect, and you can overheat the MBP. As you may know the vast majority of MBPs from 2006 to 2013 has that horrible GPU failure and they get a BSOD (Blank Screen Of Death) very easily, so i'ts better to try to avoid overheating, so you don't need to be all day baking the logic board.

Thanks will try and let you know how I get on.

I've been having a mess with the recovery partition and have deleted the platform support.plist and replaced the boot.efi but although it will try to start I can't get it to start fully. Have you any ideas?
If you have done a CCC, take from it your messed files and replace them, that should work.

I have a 2008 Xserve with an upgraded GT120 GPU from a 2009 Mac Pro, 20GB RAM, and plenty of HDD space running Lion Server. I came across an article of people running newer versions of OSX with MPF.

I tried to install El Capitan, but MPF gives me an error code -5 saying it is already an officially supported Mac, but it is not. Any ideas?

My thinking would be because of the upgraded graphics card seeing as that is the only reason support for the 2008 Xserve was dropped. I think in one of the Mac Pro forums explains how to install it with an upgraded graphics card.

Hello friends,
I have a Macbook White 3,1 end of 2007 and I'm having trouble installing the El Capitan ..

When I try via USB, the MacPostFactor install OSX inside the USB perfectly, however, when I restart and give boot for it get caught on the Apple logo screen.

When I try to do the installation directly in HD, Clean Installation via MacPostFactor, it give me a error code 1.

No longer know what to do, I need the help of you with more experience

Thank you very much,

What do you have installed on it now? OS X Hackers Yosemite? And do you have another computer with El Capitan installed on it? If two answers are yes, you can try with the process described on post #502.

I tried swapping back in the original GPU. Still says same thing. Can't install on this Mac because it already supports newer version of OSX. Very perplexing because if I try to install anything past Lion the Xserve says it isn't supported.

I have the same problem with the macbook 3,1. Error 1 when installing on the HD. Have not tried to install it on an external drive but I will try that next.
edit: tried on external drive and still a no go...
edit 22/08/16: I have now tried method 1 (osx extractor) and i get to the apple logo with the loading bar and then the circle with a line through it. The search for a fix continues...

Have you tried to install it on an external HD? Apparently it worked for 'bryan' above. I hope someone can help us. I want to revive this macbook :)

That sucks, have you tried method 1? It's a pain but it's easy if you follow the instructions. Unfortunately method 1 didn't work on my 3,1. I got the apple logo and loading bar. Then it went to the circle with a line though it. It could work on your 4,1 if you're willing to try/ get back to me so I can feel better about myself cause maybe the problem isn't just me :')

Tried the manual way, I get the Apple logo then it goes to the Circle with a line through it.

Stuck with Lion at the moment which sucks as none of the Apps that I use on my Mac Desktop will work on it :(

Desperate to get to El Capitan as I've already upgraded RAM to 4gb and added an SSD.

I tried to create a external HD as an installer , but when I give the boot me comes a symbol flashing folder and thus not enter the part of installation .
Updated the Lion to the maximum where he also updating the EFI released by Apple, tried again to install the El Capitan through MacPostFactor in HD that is running the system and got the same error 1 :/
After all I believe that anyone has the light of this problem we are going through.
We will be able to solve.
@EDIT: The circle with the risk in the middle is also given me.

I've looked through the logs and found some errors.
  1. installer: Error the package path specified was invalid: '/tmp/rMCPF/hacking_datas/RecoveryDiskMethod/extract.mpkg'.
  2. /Volumes/BS/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist: file does not exist or is not readable or is not a regular file
Throughout all of the logs, MCPF seems to get stuck at (installer:%97.750000)
I've contacted the devs and I've had no reply yet. But I'm pretty sure they are aware of the problem. But I'm not sure they have logs.

Keep friend faith , we are in the same search . In 3.1 still can not , as mentioned above, the Mac on the boot , showing or the logo of Mace infinitely or a circle cut with a risk.
I'm using MacPostFactor 2.2 / 1.0 and versions of MLPostFactor , all without success.
Detail, I am using SSD , but I think it does not make difference .
Our friend ' Jakie ' sent a message to the developer, we will wait .

Hi.
I try to install El Capitan in Mac Mini Mid 2007 (MacMini 2,1) and I follow all steps in guide (skiping 13, 14 and 15) and the boot the current OS X Installed instead pendrive Installer.

Also I tryed to do the next command:
Code:
sudo bless --folder /Volumes/[Installation Drive Name] --file /Volumes/[Installation Drive Name]/boot --setBoot

but it show this message:
Code:
Error while getting file ID of /Volumes/OS X Base System/boot. Ignoring...

Could not set boot device property: 0xe00002bc

I hope you could give mi a clue to make OS X Installer pendrive botable.

I take a photo of verbose of last messages booting from pendrive:

Thanks a lot.

Hey, I also have a macmini 2,1 and i've ultimately given up on trying to get el capitan to run on it. I tried using Extractor and MacPostFactor with versions 10.11.3, 10.11.4, 10.11.5, and 10.11.6 and ultimately wound up with a boot screen that never went away. One thing i will say that was of value while testing each version, with MacPostFactor make sure you get rid of the zip log file on the desktop before retrying an install. It seems like it just gives up if it exists after downloading. I've kept my original attempt over the (3rd) night of trying to get el capitan to work if its of use to anyone below. I have since got yosemite (10.10.5) to install, and i believe it will support what i needed in the first place anyways. Thanks
Hey acayon, and everyone else having this issue. I also have a mid 2007 MacMini 2,1 1.73 GHz with (upgraded) 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and Intel GMA 950 64 MB graphics. It is on the latest lion version with all combo updates and security patches or whatever (there is nothing in the updates left to update) and cannot get it to install, it came with . However I did follow 13,14,15 based on the steps here https://blog.christophersmart.com/2009/12/22/does-your-mac-have-64bit-efi/ it shows UFI32. I am under the impression that the core2 duo is a 64bit cpu as well, but just stating that even following those steps did not produce anything - you may be right to skip those steps - i honestly don't know.

Before i go on, i'll mention i'm using a separate partition on the same disk and no USB.

My outcome is a bit different though than others stating a loading bar and some store of crossed out symbol, for me it just hangs on the grey background apple icon, if there is a loading bar its gone faster than i can see it, and i have no crossed out line thing.

Further, I tried both boot.efi variants (black/grey). First I went with black because the site stated the legacy grey was for macpro but again, both result in a gray background with dark grey apple logo (thats it, nothing more) and it just stays there forever. What may be of interest however is that when i used the black boot.efi it did start as a white on black apple logo for less than a second, then reverts to the dark grey on light grey logo.

I tried the bless command too, and got the same message. When i enter the installer partition in safe mode, all i get is a couple of lines displaying my device UID. and it just sits there.

There are a couple of things that were a bit confusing, If anyone would like to answer these I'd appreciate it!

- Is the black / grey boot.efi required to match that of the original boot color? or is it just preference.

- The instructions in most place state that operations are to be done to the installation device, and I was curious (even though the example command states install device in brackets) that i am not supposed to apply these things to the current hard drive -- also I did not follow the step for RestoreHD, If its neccisary to get it to install then that may be my issue.

- The instructions state to apply the same text edit to both plists, and states before hand that these are the only things that should be edited, so I'd like some clarification that we are not supposed to edit the second array in the PlatformSupport.plist that looks to have model (not board-id) values in it? Also if it could be clarified that we are supposed to CHANGE the last entry in the list and not add it to the list as suggested in a prior step right?
example: PlatformSupport.plist
<plist ..>
<dict>
<key>SupportedBoardIds</key>
<array><string>Mac-....</string>..</array>
<key>SupportedModelProperties</key>
<array><string>MacPro#,#</string>..</array>

</dict>
</plist>

I am using a july 2016 el capitan app file which appears to be the latest version, but just for the purpose of seeing if we are all running into the same issue because of the source -- i didn't acquire this app file from the mac app store directly. I am guessing/taking a shot in the dark that the issue everyone else is running into at the same time derives from either the latest version or possibly that we are all getting it from a popular source.

Also, just to follow up on MacPostFactor, I do get error code 1 as well. And as mentioned its stuck at that same 97.something percent.

I'm going to try and locate an older version of el capitan app, (perhaps one that has a "boot" file on it that is apparently missing with the bless call?) I am curious though if i should be using the EFI32 boot or not now though.. Is there any kind of a model number / board id to EFI32/64 lookup?

Thanks guys

Also, for further verification here is the MD5/SHA1 hashes..

Code:
openssl md5 "/Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg"

06f6e4a7b1996c542cbda28eb5f7a8f2

openssl sha1 "/Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg"

update
I'll be trying 10.11.5 next, just to see if its 10.11.6 that is causing the issue. I'll try MacPostFactor and let you all know how it goes, then the longer version afterwards. Thanks
update
10.11.5 with macpostfactor fails as well. I'll try the other method next. Decided to instead try macpostfactor with 10.11.4 first, i'll update then.
update
10.11.4 does not work either. I'm going to change tactics and get something to make the first method automated.
update
Just a quick note, about something that I could be completely wrong about.. but it seems like the 97.75 % error could be related to you having the log zip on your desktop. When i delete the zip, it gets much further before failing. I noticed this after trying v2.0.0 and noticing that the logs were printing v2.0.1, so i figure that when the log file exists ( or i dunno, maybe for some reason a app had the file handle open or something and it was unwritable..? ) no attempt is made without first removing it (like it checks for it at that percent..), So basically all my results from testing / extracting/ wasting time with 10.11.5 and 10.11.4 seem to have been for no reason, since the log literally wasn't updating.

So, now that I've ran into that. I'll be retrying 10.11.5. 10.11.6 still fails (for some reason, it does not generate any log zip file however) but at least it ran for a couple of minutes before failing. It could be that i need more disk space or something, either way it doesnt look good for 10.11.6 (if it is even a version related issue). yea going to try 10.11.5 on macpostfix and if it fails again, I will actually do the manual method again and verify.

I hope these long forum posts are not against the rules or anything, but yea I've read elsewhere there could be an issue with the fact that I installed the security update(s) on lion. So if 10.11.5 does not work through both methods, I'll do a clean restore, get back to lion, attempt it at 10.7.2 then if that does not work, update to full blown 10.7.5 avoiding the the security patches, then if that does not work, well I'll probably give up on el capitan and target yosemite. Trying to remain positive though!
update
Ok, so with the 10.11.5 install app and MacPostFactor 2.0.1 I was able to make an external installer (the second option on the right bottom). Going to try installing from that now.

I am struggling to get El Capitan installed on a MacBookPro 2,2 from 2006.

I got OSX 10.11 El Capitan "running" on the MBP2,2 since the Beta versions last year. But only as transferred OSX from a supported Mac, with both Boot.efi replaced. Since the built-in USB isn't working out-of-the-box, I got it running step-by-step: first with Remote Desktop/Screen Sharing only, then with a USB3.0-ExpressCard34 plus external Input-devices, later on the internal Input-devices with RehabMan's USB-Inject-All-Kext or the Beta-USB-Kexts provided by TMRJIJ - OS X Hackers.

Three issues remained: Kernel Panics or sudden restarts after a short time when using Pike R. Alpha's Boot.efi for OSX 10.11, USB-Drives are not recognized when plugged-in during the running OSX 10.11 (they're maybe recognized when plugged-in before booting) and the biggest issue: the Graphics Kexts for the ATI X1600 won't work at the moment.

Try the Guide from Post #502 for installing OSX 10.11 El Capitan on the MBP2,2 - the basic steps are the same.

No kernel panics or sudden restarts!

But I recommend Yosemite on the MBP2,2, because ATI graphic kexts from OS X Hackers for Yosemite are nearly perfect, no QE/CI but you can adjust the brightness of the screen and the computer can sleep/wake up (on Yosemite, not on Capitan).
I wonder why GMA950-X3100 kexts doesn't have these two great features!

Hey skyfly555, I have a macmini2,1. As i mentioned earlier, i ended up going with Yosemite too. I have a couple issues, and since you mentioned the GMA950 drivers, which do not work at all for me (even though that is the gpu of my macmini2,1). Anyways, I was just curious if you know anyone who have had any success on yosemite or el capitan with those GMA950 drivers. When i run the pkg, the computer needs a restart and nothing happens. Still does not display GMA950 in the about box and things are still unbearably slow.

Also if it could be clarified that we are supposed to CHANGE the last entry in the list and not add it to the list as suggested in a prior step right?
example: PlatformSupport.plist
<plist ..>
<dict>
<key>SupportedBoardIds</key>
<array><string>Mac-....</string>..</array>
<key>SupportedModelProperties</key>
<array><string>MacPro#,#</string>..</array>

</dict>
</plist>

Code:
openssl md5 "/Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg"

openssl sha1 "/Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg"

I'll be trying 10.11.5 next, just to see if its 10.11.6 that is causing the issue. I'll try MacPostFactor and let you all know how it goes, then the longer version afterwards. Thanks

10.11.5 with macpostfactor fails as well. I'll try the other method next. Decided to instead try macpostfactor with 10.11.4 first, i'll update then.

10.11.4 does not work either. I'm going to change tactics and get something to make the first method automated.

Do you get make it works?
