OS X El Capitan: Working & Not Working Apps

It's actually ridiculous apps don't work after an update, I remember the good times when updating to the next OS X version would not be any problem except for old hardware, now apps just break with every major update (10.10- to 10.11 for instance). Those good old days are gone sadly!

To be fair, Linux add-ons have been randomly breaking apps and websites for awhile now if you keep upgrading them to the latest versions.

Seriously? This isn't "just an update", you're going from a public release to a very early beta release. Of course apps will be broken! The whole point of a beta/developer preview is so developers can test their apps and fix them BEFORE the public release.

Could someone else confirm if Quickbooks 2014 works?

Quickbooks 2014 does not work for me. I can get the program to open, but once I click on anything it crashes instantly. I use QB for my business on this laptop and definitely shouldn't have downloaded the El Capitan beta. Oops.

Well....I use vyprvpn (Golden Frog) and it works the same as it does in 10.10...which is just fine.

I'm downloading the public beta right now (I hadn't been checking my email as diligently as I should be the last week or so and got to it a bit late), so I'm curious: Has anyone had any trouble with Ableton Live? It's not mentioned in the initial post and I searched the thread and it returned no results, so I figured it would be a good idea to ask. I know it was quite the pain in the ass for several months after Yosemite came out, but I'm hoping the changes in El Cap aren't the kind that will throw a proverbial stick into the spokes that make Live turn. Doing some cursory Googling has led me to believe it works just as well, but I like you guys and would like a straightforward answer.

I'm also curious as to whether or not certain games have issues (mostly Civ V and Borderlands 2), but those aren't exactly deal breakers and I didn't actually search for those in the thread yet.

I know I should be dual booting and not using it as a daily driver, but I like to live dangerously.

I mean I knew this is Beta ... where's the Quality now a days in Apple (other then gold sink, bull ******** consumer to buy way over-priced, ****** products, ... ) ...

It's like those days Steve was fired by Apple, the company board go really greedy, and almost kill Apple ...

And then they try to copy that crappy feature from Windows 10, split screen? (what the hell do you need split screen when your device don't support touch screen, it's so stupid !!!

Thanks for your feedback. Have you installed the update that came out today?
One observation, tho: I have use Quickbooks for a while, and it seems Intuit makes it fail on purpose with newer version of OS X.
Think of this: Quickbooks doesn't do anything special on its GUI to become incompatible this easily.
I'm really considering getting another app to replace it, even if it's a plain spreadsheet.

I just installed the Supplemental Update and Mail, Safari are working perfectly fine here.

Agreed! I think a lot of folks are buying dev licenses so they can have the latest software and somehow forget their using beta software that's made specifically to test for the actual final release. It's really hard to understand why people complain about software that's under development.

Portal 2 has worked fine for me since DP1, now on DP3 and still works fine. However my game performance has taken a hit since DP1, DP1 it was great DP2/3 not so much

I updated yesterday afternoon and everything seems fine for me. Safari is working and so is Mail. I don't regret it.

You must not see the forest for the trees. One day there'll be no difference between iOS and OS X, only hardware. It's another step towards that.

First of all, hello to all on this forum.

Yesterday I installed El Capitan, and for now there two problems with apps.
Topaz Labs don't work at all, and Adobe Premiere CC have problem with Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (Open CL). If I choose that in Project Settings, video is unusable, with glitches, horizontal lines, yellow and orange colour distortion (see the picture)... If I choose CUDA, preview is OK, but rendering can be done. After some time there is an "unknown error" when render video.

With Mercury Playback Engine Software Only everything is Ok, but rendering process is much, much slower. On Yosemite I render 4K video (241 MB) with Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (Open CL) for 8-9 minutes, same video on El Capitan with Mercury Playback Engine Software Only render for hour and half.

Another apps seems work fine, and obviously faster.

Scrivener is working - go to Settings > Privacy and tick off Scrivener's access to contacts. After that it does work, although it will crash in fullscreen mode in some instances - especially after waking the Mac from sleep.

iaWriter is crashing upon start. It works fine if you had any document opened - it will open all right. But when you close and try to open another document the app will crash and then crash upon restarting ad infinitum

PhotoBooth & iMovie - basically recording with FaceTime camera (tested on Thunderbolt Display) is buggy. It starts recording, but then freezes. The recorded video doesn't show up in PhotoBooth library, although it's visible in iMovie, but it's impossible to play it back. Recording in iMovie also doesn't work - same behaviour as in PhotoBooth.

XQuartz (requires rootless be turned off to install)

Tested it and cannot confirm it doesn't work in PB1. Rootless is turned on and it installed without any problems. It seems to be working fine. I only have to investigate why I can't start a remote x11 session, it might also be the remote machine or some setting ($DISPLAY for example).

Microsoft Outlook Preview 2016 (very buggy with exchange account)

This isn't an El Capitan problem but a general problem with Outlook 2016. It was introduced in one of the preview versions and is still in the final release. You can see some complaints about very buggy Exchange support in the official announcement on the MS Office blog.
