Is there ANY app that provides "folders on top" functionality, SIP or not?
You mean like a Finder replacement? Forklift does that and seems to be working fine in El Capitan so far.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Editor isn't working for me.

I have problems with Photoshop Elements 11 - the application works except for the save file dialogs, which lock up the program (apart from that, Mrs Lincoln, how was the play?)

Time to move to Pixelmator or Affinity, since I don't feel like crossing Adobe's palms with silver again - but a lot of my use is preparing existing material for web rather than 'creative' stuff, so I'll miss the 'Save For Web' feature and PDF rendering in PS (Pixelmator/Affinity can get the job done, but not as flexibly).

Screen Recycler

Driver doesn't install (not surprising) - website says it doesn't work with 10.11 (nothing about a fix). Support for 10.9 has been 'Beta Only' since forever (although it worked fine) so I'm not holding my breath.

Anybody tried it with rootless mode disabled?

The fix for this is to put libdvdcss into /usr/local/lib manually. SIP (System Integrity Protection) is what's stopping you from modifying /usr/lib. Fortunately HandBrake knows to look in multiple places for the library.
sorry, but i can't find the "/usr/local/lib" folder to manually copy it in there. when i search it it says folder can't be found....just got this mac and learned how to back up my dvd's 2 days ago and now this happens.

OK, you're right, /usr/local/lib doesn't exist on my Mac either. I must be either remembering the instructions wrong, or you have to create it yourself first...

What about this guy's reply on Page 1?

Forklift is very slow and crashing when for example you try to delete a file.

Is he using the latest version? I have no idea. All I know is I don't feel like shelling out $30 for something that might not work right. I see the last "major" version was in 2010 (don't perceive new features are added often) and if there ever is another major update, it won't be a free update.

I just downloaded the evaluation version and managed to lock it up just by switching "views" from Cover flow to Columns and then clicking on List view. I got the spinning Beach Ball of Death....(still spinning and locked up over two minutes later). Yeah $30 and it didn't last 20 seconds before it locked up in El Capitan. Thanks, but no thanks.

I went ahead and bought VMWare Fusion 8 to replace 5.x. It works fine again (it ought to for a full $80 full price fee!). I don't see where the XP virtualization is any faster, though. If anything, I think it might be a hair slower with Pinball Arcade, but it's still playable with Ball reflections turned off, window mode engaged (to get rid of flipper lag input) and Vsync turned on (tears screen otherwise).

DirectX seems a bit improved in that Visual Pinball no longer outright crashes with acceleration turned on, but runs so damn slow it's still useless. Turning off 3D acceleration and rebooting XP runs about 100x faster and ball movement is fast and smooth, but the flippers still feel seriously lagged and that makes it unplayable despite itself. My 2008 MBP in Boot Camp runs Visual Pinball perfectly in XP and Pinball Arcade too (with ball reflections ON). Sad a 2008 Macbook Pro is still faster in Boot Camp than a 2012 Mac Mini Quad i7 in VMWare Fusion 8. I guess they have a LONG way to go to making virtualization close to running native. No DX11 support in VMware Fusion, so no point in installing Windows 8.1 or 10. I think even if it were there, it'd run too slow to be useful anyway (given VMware can't even handle ball reflections). I'd install Windows 8.1 Pro on VMWare anyway (with the option of upgrading to 10 if they ever stop spying on users), but I'm afraid if I later change my drive config so I can use Boot Camp on my Mac Mini that it would see that as a huge change and give me a hassle or something.

I'm using the latest App Store version from here and it works fine for me. It is $19.99 and was just updated in June 2015.

I got it right off the developer's own web site and it's the same version number (2.6.5). I loaded it up again and this time it didn't crash like that, but seeing as I have no idea why it did the first time, it still makes me nervous to plunk down $30. I'd prefer it had a navigate "up" button like XtraFinder for that matter and I miss the color icons already as well.

I did find that I can create a full screen split view regular Finder that basically looks like a giant dual-pane that won't move around, but it's a PITA to set up just like aligning two windows is a PITA to do on a regular basis. I might just leave it up all the time on that full screen, but then if I want a quick small single pane Finder I have to remember to right-click on the Finder dock to create a new windows wherever I'm at. It'd be nice if you could set the default left-click Finder behavior to create a new Finder window every time instead of traveling across screens to go to one that's open.

The App Store version would of course be subject the the App Store Sandbox rules where the web site version would not. I wonder if the web site version is trying to do things outside the Sandbox that are broken with SIP? I'm having no issues with the App Store version here on El Capitan.

Well, it didn't take down the OS with a kernel panic or anything. It just locked up. I forced quit and restarted. So far it's behaving itself. I've got 30 days to play with it and see how it goes. Meanwhile, I'm going to pick up an 8GB USB stick just to put a recovery partition on it and I can turn SIP off and get NFS and XtraFinder running again in the mean time.

I installed OS X 10.11 El Capitan on 30 September 2015. Initially I liked some of its features; however, it broke too much software. Fortunately, I used a sacrificial machine for the experiment. Anyway, here’s some of the problems I encountered.

The following applications broke on a clean OS X 10.11 El Capitan install:
Totalfinder (Expected: SIP)
Totalspaces (Expected: SIP)
BBEdit (Prior to 11.1.3)
Photoshop CC 2015— Install fails
InDesign CC 2015— Install fails
Dreamweaver CC 2015—Install fails
MS Office 2016—Depends on Version)
QuarkXpress 2015—crashes
iCloud syncing is intermittent

The new San Francisco font looks much better than the hard to read Helvetica Neue that came with Yosemite. I still dislike the overly flat user interface and comically juvenile icon and button colors. Fortunately, you can change the icons back if you have access to the Maverick icons.

ITunes 12.3 is almost to the point of not useable for those managing large music libraries and needing control. The blending of colors from album art has destroyed the once great user interface. Moreover, the inability to return you back to where you were in the library after opening a playlist is idiotic. I do not want to be dumped at the root of the library every time I leave a playlist. This also has a solution by returning to an earlier version of ITunes albeit with possible syncing problems with iDevices. My choice is iTunes 12.1.27 since that’s the last version that returns you back to where you were when exiting a playlist.

This is beginning to remind me of MS a few years back, but at least MS had the excuse of a lot of different hardware to try to support. Sadly, I wish I could say something more positive on the fourth anniversary of Steve’s death.

Ironic since Photoshop CS3 from ~2007 still works and Office 2011 seems OK here. I can't say the same for VMWare Fusion 5.x. I had to buy Fusion 8 for $79 and that works fine.

The new San Francisco font looks much better than the hard to read Helvetica Neue that came with Yosemite. I still dislike the overly flat user interface and comically juvenile icon and button colors. Fortunately, you can change the icons back if you have access to the Maverick icons.

I'm actually surprised how little the interface changes bother me after seeing the photos of Yosemite. The only change that really bothers me is the traffic light buttons being flat-toned. I don't use many Apple Apps and the rest of the stuff on my dock are the same. In short, I don't care after all. I feel stupid for ranting all that time. Of course, the font change might have helped and Dark Mode actually looks better for the dock/menu bar than Mavericks.

ITunes 12.3 is almost to the point of not useable for those managing large music libraries and needing

Define "large". I've got almost 9000 songs, 500 movies and a 710 TV shows. I don't know why you think it's unusable. I resisted the upgrade to iTunes 12 for a long time because I didn't like the interface changes on my friend's computer when I played with it. But iOS9 forced me to upgrade or not be able to sync my iPod Touch. It turns out it's not that bad, after all. "Playlist Mode" looks almost just like iTunes 11.x for music and with album art turned on, etc. There is no color bleed for that mode. The Movie list mode is the same and so is the TV list mode. I never have used icon mode, etc. and don't use it now either. Artist mode isn't bad, though. I see no slow behaviors like scrolling, etc. and search finds anything quickly. In short, I can live with it after all.

Moreover, the inability to return you back to where you were in the library after opening a playlist is idiotic. I do not want to be dumped at the root of the library every time I leave a playlist.

I just tried it. In Playlist mode I highlighted a song down in the list randomly and went to a playlist and came back to music mode and it was right where I left off so I don't know what you're talking about (V12.3.0.44 which as of this writing is the current version). I tried switching between "My Music" Artist mode and Playlist mode and playlists within that mode and every time I switched back to where I was, it was still where I left it (same for movies and tv shows and back to music).

For those that tinker and like to customize, you might as well just disable SIP in the Recovery Environment and then things will work again. How bad can it be? SIP is not enabled in Yosemite and the world hasn't come to an end... Personally, I am not willing to give up on all my utilities and customization or wait dev's to fix (some may never) for the sake of what Apple thinks we need in system level OS security. I'm ok with the risks, at least for now.
