Is this a problem with the microphone or speakers?
I find that frequently my mic now doesn't work correctly when I use facetime/skype/google hangouts. The person on the other end just hears a sort of popping noise. I can test this my calling the skype test number. It seems to get resolved (sometimes) by doing a reboot. But it reappears again after.
My issue seems similar to what is discussed here:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6613807
I'm using 10.10.2 on a mid-2012 macbook air.
I think it only appeared after "upgrading" from 10.10.1

It's the speakers. I get a loud "pop...pop...pop" sound on the right speaker, the same as in the thread you mentioned on Apple's discussion board.

Rebooting is a 1:3 chance of working, PRAM and SMC resets fix it temporarily.

Under 10.10.1, I only had the loud popping sound using Facetime; meanwhile, under 10.10.2, it's omnipresent and will cuts audio altogether, even in iTunes.

I'm writing this in Windows 8.1 right now on the same Mac, and I've had no issues with audio. They definitely screwed something up and are nor likely to hurry on a 3.5yr old machine; the parting remarks from AppleCare, to "buy a new Mac or wait for a possible software update," made that abundantly clear.

Do you mean you have facebook synced to your contacts? And you want the profile picture to be displayed with iMessage?
Do you currently have their initials displayed in circle?

yes, exactly. I see their names but no picture and I have checked the contacts in facebook account

i guess i'll add this here 9i had put in the 'little things thread, but this seems more appropriate)

anyone else having problem with the Notification Center "today" part not working at all?

examples:
- the weather widget does not display any place, just a "+" Add icon which is not responsive (even if i click the "i" first)
- the clock widget is stuck on cupertino. i cannot eliminate it, nor add anywhere else
- the calculator works if i type the number on the keyboard, but not if i click them with the mouse
- the stocks ticker does not allow to change the stock options
- etc.

basically, a complete dud.
i have 10.10.2, with all updates.
i have tried restarting a couple of times but no luck.

suggestions?

I suggest try the free application EtreCheck. Run the application and it will show, as a text output, and show incompatible services in Red. Then you be shown to the path to delete the incompatible file, then reboot after all deleting.

This should help.

Please excuse my stupid question. But, I've been wondering IF I have the same issues so many others are talking about - or if mine is different.

1. I can be surfing online and then suddenly everything just HANGS for 5 - 10 seconds before I can continue. It just hangs. The screen doesn't go blank. Is this the WIFI issue others are talking about? Or, is this something with my service provider maybe? I don't see my wifi icon doing anything different either. I get this a few times per hour, more or less.

2. I've also noticed, since the recent Yosemite update that my pointer isn't doing so well when navigating a flash video online. For example, if I want to advance the video I'll "click" ahead... but the actual advancing is DELAYED a few seconds - and my pointer even has a hard time grabbing the controls for advancing. It just seems so much more clunky, delayed, un-precise, sluggish, problematic, etc. I've never had flash problems before this. Now, it seems rather constant.

Not sure if my problems are related to the last Yosemite update... or something else. The problems started about then... but I also uninstalled Java about then too.

Major input lag on any bluetooth devices, all Apple branded. At one point my keyboard decided to type whatever it wanted, mostly spaces... Tried pram and nvram reset didn't help. Using good ol'wired keyboard and mouse...

Hi.

I have just started having a recent problem on my Mac with Preview; I can't open anything with Preview, be it a JPG, PNG or PDF file. I can Quick Look the said files, but if I click "Open with Preview" it crashes.

Create a new user, reboot the computer and log into the new user. Does the crashing issue still happen?

Wrong mouse icon

Constantly annoying. Mouse cursor icon gets stuck in the I-beam icon or hand icon. For instance moving to the traffic lights window controls without the mouse button pressed should always change the icon to the regular mouse pointer icon, but sometimes it is stuck in the I-beam text cursor.

It's been there since Mavericks.

Second that; in addition, I often 'loose' the pointer (mouse icon/cursor) so that
I don't know where it is.
Only up-jumping tooltips and button shadows tell me where.
Got to move to the side as far as possible and click.
Only then the pointer shows again.
Indeed, since Mavericks and still on Yose..whatever.

Smart Zoom not working (for me) in Yosemite

my Magic Mouse no longer have smart zoom (double tap on surface) after upgrade to OS X 10.10

"Same here." Using Safari 8.0.3, using Magic Mouse, trying to double-tap to zoom, not working. It was working before Yosemite (in my memory it might have been working after as well, I can't attest to that for sure, but it's not working now!). Not even sure what to check or test; I've turned the feature off and on, tried different tapping speeds, etc.

Works on my newer iMac at work, not on my older one here at home (20" Early 2008. I know, a bit long in the tooth, but with my SSD installed it's almost as fast at everything as my 2014 iMac).

Argh, I am being driven mad by Yosemite and wishing I'd never updated it!

Bug in all input fields for me - doesn't recognise a mouse click in any input field in a browswer window, both chrome and safari. Can't edit content I've written, scroll downwards to view content and the only way I can edit something I've written..i.e. in this box I'm writing in now, is to use the up/down arrow keys on the keybard. Clicking anywhere in the box produces nothing. Links freeze when trying to click them as mouse clicks don't work - often takes 5 minutes before I can click it (i.e. to verify my account here via email). If i copy/paste content form web form into pages, I can't edit it in there either as it seems to behave in the same way (but it's fine if I type from scratch).

Takes x3 times as long to do anything online now! Is this happening to anyone else? I've read a few pages but can't see anything.

USB umount sucks

I noticed that, since 10.10.2, USB sticks and disks dismount VERY slow.
Even programs that automatically dismount their drives,
like SUPERDUPER (backup),
have difficulty to dismount or even fail to do so.
Repeated dismount attempts by Finder eventually work.
(it's like I went back to MSWindows ....)

Anybody else?

Yosemite Needs Help

OS X Yosemite. I downloaded it on my 2012 MB Air, ended up crashing beyond repair. I bought a new MB Pro about a month ago with Mavericks on it, I like it but thought I would "Try" Yosemite on the 2014 MBPro I bought in February 2015 thinking the previous problems I had were due to the age of my MB Air.

Immediately started having problems with my new computer and fresh Yosemite Download. Specifically Memory would "Run Out"! After a online chat and a call to one of Apples call centers, the problem persisted and Apple had NO solutions. I had to put my Mavericks backup back on the machine.

I would think Apple needs to quit promoting the Yosemite software until it has the bugs worked out of it or at least warn people of the possibilities of "Computer Destruction" thats what happened to my MB Air. I got it off my new computer before any permanent damage could be done.

Specific Problems: S-L-O-W App reactions, Memory (Ram) usage so high computer would lock up, apps would quit responding. I purchased a Real Time cleaner and as it did help I feel I shouldn't have to buy a third party program to control the ram? I have a retina display and the fonts looked terrible. I GUARANTEE if you check your file system you will find Duplicate upon Duplicate files as I did. (software program for managing duplicates) Log files have to be constantly manually erased. If you find your machine is slowing and slowing you might have duplicate files filling your free space as I did, this can also cause the slow responses when opening files or programs. In short, I understand this is not an "Official" final product, but I will state it is the signally worst software "Up Grade" I have ever tried and it just keeps getting worse.

I believe Apple made a good product until recently. They are "Over Upgrading" systems that don't need it? Sometimes its not necessary to reinvent the wheel.

So I will leave this comment with these two statements, One: I have owned many types and models of computers since the 1980's, and second: Yosemite needs a lot of work, if I were Apple I would abandon this project and just keep upgrading Mavericks for a few more years!!

Finder, Dock

Finder seems very unstable with Yosemite - sometimes it hangs my dock completely. …

I should not expect a bug in Finder.app to cause Dock.app to stop responding.

Suggestion: first defocus from Yosemite, focus on the symptoms in Finder.

At https://forums.macrumors.com/search/?f=69 please seek topics with Finder in the title. Amongst the results you'll almost certainly find someone describing symptoms that are similar, or the same.

When you identify the cause(s) of the symptoms in Finder, then you'll probably also gain an explanation for Dock not behaving as expected.

Hint: the problem is unlikely to be Finder itself.

The OS X provided printing utility - inside system preferences - absolutely continues to suck really bad. It refuses to recognize my AirPrint printers on my network.

As soon as I upgraded from Mavericks, printing nightmares commenced.

I actually downgraded back to Mavericks for a time, to wait for Apple to fix several very annoying bugs. But, just yesterday, I jumped back to Yosemite, only to find that they have still not addressed some annoying printing issues.

Anyone else have printing issues?

Quick Look Problems

I just recently installed Yosemite and upgraded to a new hard drive (Seagate 1TB SSHD ST1000LM014) on my early 2011 Macbook Pro 13'. It has been working wonderfully for the most part, but I ran into a problem with quick look today.
If I try to use quick look on a NEF file (that's the format for a Nikon RAW photo) my memory pressure instantly jumps to the critical level according to my memory diagnostic tool. The camera RAW file always comes up as an error and my memory returns to normal after exiting quick look.
Quick look works fine on all other files I've looked at so far. Documents, jpegs, video files all work perfectly fine. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem with NEFs or any other kind of camera RAW files?

EDIT: Upon further inspection, it appears to be newer NEF files from my Nikon D7100 that are causing a problem. My older NEF files from my D80 are still working in quick look.

UPDATE: Found a workaround for this by deleting the rawcamera.bundle and rawcamerasupport.bundle for the CoreServices folder in the System Library and replacing them with older versions (I replaced them with version 5.07). The bug is still there, but at least you can work around it.

Bugapple?

I just wondered:
is there anything like an OSX Bugzilla (towards APPLE of course).
I fear that, even when APPLE reads all this, it comes a bit unstructured.
And how would THEY ever mend the problems from this?
