I have a mac pro 2,1 that I loaded yosemite on with the piker alpha pre-installed yosemite usb installer.
It works fine with a radeon 280x card.

But when I try to update to 10.10.5 it hangs during startup.
Is there something I have to do before installing an update?
We really don't usually assist with Mac Pro model (as noted in post 1) but I know for a fact that there's a patch going around in their thread that works perfectly in keeping that boot.efi there.

Hi all,

Alright, I've got Yosemite (10.10.5) running on a MacBook 4,1 via MacPostFactor and putting the installer on a USB drive. That's the good news. Here's the bad news...

What is the best way to get sound working? As of right now, it doesn't even see it's own internal speakers.

And... are there any means of getting some of the graphical issues worked out? Right now, the title bar in most windows (including the close, minimize, and maximize buttons) are missing unless I click in that general area.

I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Ok I've had 10.10.5 for a while. Gave up on 10.11.6. I want to blur the dock. It used to be doable in cDock but isn't anymore. I'm on a MacBook Pro 2,1. Any advice on cDock? Right now I'm just using the Tiger theme and curving the edges. It's as close as I can get.

ALSO. All credit to @HFTaylor12 (he posted this in the PowerPC section and I figured I'd try it on my 2,1. If you type

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver QuartzGLEnabled -boolean YES

It kinda enables some things OpenGL would do.

I can play 3D chess now.

To get sound back search for "Kext Utility" (google and you will find it).
(It is also one of the files you download with the Extractor).
Then put into it the Apple HDA.kext. (Also one of the files downloaded with the Extractor).
After rebooting your mac, your microphone and internal speakers will be recognized again and sound will return.
This must be done in unsupported macs after every update or patch supplied by Apple.

everything has gone great till now. so here is what has happened i reinstalled os x yosemite on my macbook 2,1 and it was working great just like it did before all the stuff happened then i decided to install the 10.10.5 update and that has made this whole thing a living nightmare. it wont see any usb devices nor will it see the trackpad or keyboard. the only way i could get it go work is i have to pull the ssd and then boot it then shut it down put the drive back in and hold option while booting and boot to lion. i think i am gonna delete my yosemite install and just keep lion until macpostfactor has become a little better. no offence but there are too many problems right now. i wish i had not tried to update my install i had before because it was perfect.

I cannot say about the MB 2.1 but in the 4.1 any update, even the lightest security update of Apple, makes "disappear" the built in microphone and speakers. To recover sound the Apple HDA.kext must be reinstalled using the Kext Utility.
Maybe (?) in the MB 2.1 besides the kext I mentioned, other kexts have to be reinstalled after any update.
It is always a very good procedure before changing anything or updating anything in a good running system, to make with CCC a booting clone in an external drive or large enough USB stick. If something goes wrong, one boots from that external system and can clone it back to the inner, main drive.
After trying many times to install El Capitan (or even reinstall Yosemite) with the "new" MCPF 2.0.1 and always failing, I very much doubt that MCPF will ever become as reliable and good working as you hope.

yes i know but i just wish i had not messed up my old install as it worked fine. sometimes i wish i could go back in time and stop me self from doing stupid things but now it is just trying to get back into lion to delete the yosemite partition but yosemite is kinda stopping me from doing that as long as it is the main boot partition. when i power on my macbook i hold option but it still continues to boot yosemite as if the keyboard and trackpad is not even plugged in. i swear it is just easier for me to say screw it and wait a little while longer for a new update to some out for it that might at least help the issue. but for now i am stuck on lion which is still no as bad as i thought but i wish i could reinstall my yosemite and have it work. any help would be appreciated.

i would recommend you wait on that as when i updated it to 10.10.5 from 10.10 it no longer sees the mouse and keyboard and any usb devices. it was a pain to get back into lion and delete the yosemite partition so that i can have a working machine again. until i hear other wise i am not reinstalling that on my macbook. just my opinion.

Not sure how to start. I have succeeded in putting Yosemite on my one of my late 2007 MacBook Pro's, the other will not correct the video/audio problem, and i have a handful of 2006 iMacs (one of which i am writing on now) that is in the same boat (still with 5mbs ram) even after sudo when i look at console it says that they are not signed correctly ( i did try to clone the first drive and it works on itself, but not the others - same problem) i have a mac pro ( i know different - but am willing to different beta to try differnt things out) i have tried both ways (MacPostFactor 1.0.1,2.0.1, and OS Extractor) all the same? any suggestions?

hey there, after several days of trial and error it finally worked out on my macbook 2,1 with mcpf 2.0.1!
In os x lion (snow lion didn't work), I created the yosemite installer on an usb stick, then booting from the stick and the installation went well.
initially, there was no audio and bad&slow graphics. re-installing the AppleHDA.kext with the kext utility.app solved the problem for both, audio and graphics. no idea why: maybe it's because I set the boot arg in the configruation of the app to "kext-dev-mode=1", and also the app repairs permissions for all kexts (see the kext utility website for more).
as for now, I'm quite happy with the performance of my "new" macbook, touch wood.
many thanks to this forum and the the developers!

I have a black macbook 4,1 that I'm trying to install Yosemite via MacPostFactor and everything seems to be going fine on the install until near the very end when the progress bar almost finished but doesn't. Left it over night so not a time issue. Any ideas? Love the look of the black macbook so would like to update it.

Get a MacBook 5,2 logic board. You're supported all the way to El Capitan and can install Sierra using dosdude1's hack. Yes it's a little expensive but everything works.

I have a late macbook 2008, version 4.1, OS X 7.5 I used macpostfactor to try to upgrade my OS to maverick. The first time I used the "clean os" option; it wiped out my hard-drive and the computer wouldn't boot and had to reinstall lion with 10.7. Then I used the "upgrade os" option in macpostfactor and after rebooting; it goes to the installation screen but only wants to install lion.

Hi I have followed instructions to install Kexts for apple hda and the other kext required to have sound on my Macbook 4,1 for Yosemite with no success my question is it possible to make a version of the install with the sound kexts readily installed and do a clean install with that ?

Hello, i've installed OS X 10.10 on my MacBook 2,1 using SFOTT, because neither OS X Extractor or MPF worked for me. After the installation was done i installed the OS X Extractor to get the Kexts for Graphics and so on. First, the GMA 950 kexts installer (pkg) also doesn't works for me, at the end of the installation it gives me an error and that i should contact the vendor of the software. So i extracted the kexts using pacifist and installed it with KextUtility now the graphics is ok, but i have one big problem: The backlight regulation doesn't work, the screen stucks always at full brightness. If i press F1, the sun appears, but the brightness stays at full. What can I do to get the brightness regulation work?

The graphics card isn't fully supported, so some features are missing, one of them is brightness regulation. The only solution is to install an app called shady

I mainly want to reduce brightness to save energy when the macbook is in battery mode. Shady seems to not reduce the display backlight, only to make the screen look like dark. If the macbook display is in standby mode after 5 mins of no usage, the screen will go dark, but the backlight light stays on.

But thank you for the information that it isn't my mistake...

I have one more issue: Although i installed the nosleep.kext, the MacBook goes to standby if i close it. I can't wake it up from sleep anymore, i need to switch it off and start it again...
