Lost NTFS functionality going from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11

Anatoly said:

Is your external driver (USB 2.0) not showed on your desktop under your 10.4.10 with applied OS x 10.4.11 patch when our driver is installed?

Yes, however, the Paragon NTFS driver was the Beta 4 version. It worked fine for me on 10.4.10, but upon upgrading to 10.4.11, when reconnecting the NTFS volume, it would not mount. To upgrade, I repaired permissions and ejected all USB and Firewire external disks. The NTFS volume is a USB 2.0 connection. After upgrading and repairing permissions again, I connected each volume. All showed up except the NTFS-formatted volume. It showed up in Disk Utility but not on the desktop. I disconnected the NTFS volume, uninstalled Beta 4, restarted and reconnected the NTFS volume. It showed up normally and I could browse its contents.

Note: this was with Beta 4. I've had no problems with the full application. All remains OK.

Thanks for the key

Thanks a lot for the serial.

Anyway I had this issue with my NTFS Drive. For some reason my Trashes folder got corrupted and refused to be deleted. Had to run chkdsk to remove it.

Also I now get approx 24 MB/Sec from my NTFS Partition which is FASTER than the 22 MB/Sec from FAT32.

Great Job guys.

Dear papypaprika,

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Can't you access your NTFS partition if you install our driver? Uninstall? In both cases?

We have prepared a special debug version that will keep the necessary log information in the /var/log/pntfs.log. Please install the debug version, reproduce the problem and let me know you have this file ready to send.

Dear Nightkrawler,

Thank you for your feedback. Please install the debug version too and plug in the disk. Will this disk be mounted? If not, please let me know you have this /var/log/pntfs.log file ready to send.

Dear LGFelix,

Do you have the same problem with the release version of the driver?

The debug version can be downloaded here:
http://download.paragon-software.com/macosx/beta/NTFS_for_Mac_OS_X_6.0_debug.dmg

Thank you all,
Anatoly.

Dear Nightkrawler,

Thank you for your feedback. Please install the debug version too and plug in the disk. Will this disk be mounted? If not, please let me know you have this /var/log/pntfs.log file ready to send.
The disk mounts without problems, i can reproduce the kernel panic while copying a previously copied file on my ntfs bootcamp partition. (see the kernel panic in my previous post). Unfortunately i cant give you a debug log because there is none even after numerous reinstalling/restarting with the debug version, should the log exist even the disks mounts successfully?

-edit-
odd, now i cant reproduce my the copy kernel panic anymore, im going to try some things now maybe i can find out what it was.
Anyway, i noticed that i cant open some files on my external ntfs drive when they are compressed, even finder crashes in coverflow view when trying to previewing them:
23.11.07 20:46:45 com.apple.quicklook[122] Fri Nov 23 20:46:45 MacBookPro17LAN quicklookd[122] <Error>: read_file: warning: failed to read entire file.
and
23.11.07 20:46:52 com.apple.launchd[98] ([0x0-0xb00b].com.apple.finder[113]) Exited abnormally: Bus error
This may be the reason why it kernel paniced the first time (previous post) because the system volume informations directory is compressed. The files working perfectly fine in windows and the filesystem should be healthy because i was checking it in windows with chkdsk many times.

-edit2-
yikes...., i just noticed that if i try to repair my external with disk util. im getting an error  seems to be the master file table. Odd, i ran chkdsk in windows before with the "auto. repair filesystem errors" (in german: "dateisystemfehler automatisch korrigieren") and it said it was healthy...
Also, there are variable names ($Volume for example, look at the screenshot) instead of the text while repairing, i think thats a small bug unless its only in the debug version :)

-edit3-
after the error from repairing the disk the mft seems to be broken. (-> disk unmountable, windows says its raw format)
I tried to restore the mft with testdisk but even the backup from mft is gone :( (there are no important files on it so no big deal, im gonna format it and run some disk diagnosis tools when i have the time, maybe it was really the disk that died, but everything worked in windows without problems before the "repair" with disk util.)

Anatoly: I have found no problems with the release version, and it appears to work correctly in OS X 4.10.11. The problem I had was only with Beta 4 when I upgraded to OS X 4.10.11 from OS X 4.10.10. Beta 4 worked (for me) in OS X 4.10.10 but not 4.10.11.

Possible severe problem with Diskutility formating as "Windows NT"

Hi Anatoly,

I have discovered the following problem:

1. I formated a USB Harddisk (SAMSUNG MP0804H Media) with 74.2 GB as "Windows NT Filesystem" using Diskutility and the Filesystem plugin of Paragon NTFS for Mac (Final version)

2. upon testing (copying to and from) I discovered that some files were corrupt: primarily images and Powerpoint presentations (possibly others).

3. It is reproducible and I then prepared different Powerpoint-slides in Windows using Office 2003 and embedded different types of images inside (JPG, PNG, TIF, BMP, GIF) for each type a different Powerpoint file.

4. I copied those files to the USB drive (Windows NT Filesystem) and then back again to a windows machine (all files were corrupt - EXCEPT: the file with the embedded JPG-File appeared ok!)

5. This error does not appear on Drives formatted from the Windows side (eg. Bootcamp) only the diskutility plugin from Paragon has this error!

I can send you the files (original and modified) both are unfortunately to large for the forum upload (both 1MB) if desired.

Tell me if you need more details!

IN CONCLUSION:
I currently strongly suggest to NOT format disks for storage of important data from Diskutility using "Windows NT Filesystem" until somebody can reproduce this error and Paragon might supply a fix!

I've been using the betas until beta 3, I've recently lost the ability to mount my NTFS drive. Where can I download the uninstaller from? I made the mistake of deleting it.

Anatoly,

I have installed the final release version and found issues in the following situations:

Situation 1 - I connected an NTFS formatted 45GB USB2 drive to my MacPro. The drive had previously been the system drive (XP SP2) in an old box. I placed it, unaltered, in an external enclosure. I wanted to delete everything from it except for jpegs downloaded from my camera and contents of the My Documents directory. I made directories for the things I was saving and made my deletions.

Everything appeared to go fine until I attempted to empty the Trash. I got a progress bar dialog with message of preparing to delete X number of items. I allowed it to continue for probably 10 or 15 minutes. When it got to over 3 million items and still counting (I'm sure more than were in the Trash) it was preparing to delete, I canceled the emptying. I made a couple more starts with the same results.

I uninstalled NTFS for Mac and emptied the Trash without issue, but now the USB drive would not mount. I tried it on another Mac and had the same result of no recognition.

I booted into XP and found that the Trashes directory refused to be deleted. Finally, I reformatted the drive.

Situation 2 - With the same drive reformatted, I booted back into OS X, made some directories and copied some jpegs and Quicktime files back onto the drive. I booted back into Windows and found that most of the jpegs (probably 9 out of 10) were corrupted and about half of the mov files were corrupted.

Here's a resized-resaved example of the typical appearances of the corruption.

Paragon E-Service System Login Problems?

Has any other beta tester who got a free license been able to log in
to the Paragon E-Service system, using the Username and Password in
the same email from Paragon as the license key?

I go to:

http://kb.paragon-software.com/ess

enter the info, and then get a blank page. The same thing happens when I
enter an incorrect password. The password (which the system can re-send
to me so I know it's right) is a dollar "$" followed by an English word,
and looks vaguely like a shell variable reference, which makes me suspicious.
I also know the username is correct, because when I try to create a new one
with the same name, it says it already exists.

Any help is appreciated.

Both ScienceMac and I have recently posted about reproducible corruption on USB drives (mine was formatted under Windows) - Pretty serious stuff IMO.

Is anyone else finding the same thing?

Can someone help me get my NTFS drive back? I just want the uninstaller for beta 3.

Sorry, I never downloaded beta 3. I could be mistaken, but I think I recall reading somewhere in this thread that the uninstaller in any version will remove what ever version is installed.

Do you know that this is not the case?

Is there still anybody from Paragon listening? My access is not back... I'm wondering: we reported lots of bugs, and no answer since a long time...

huge files and jpegs

Hi all,

I am trying Leopard with the trial version of paragon ntfs. This seems to work quite well, but there are still a few issues.

1) I have a full backup of my hfs+ partition in a dmg-file on a hfs+ formated partition of an external HDD. I would like to copy this 56 GB file to a ntfs partition mount using paragon ntfs on the same external drive. Doing this works without any error messages while coping. Unfortunately the content of the file gets corrupted during this operation. Mounting the dmg from the ntfs partition is not possible and the md5 sum is differs from the original.

2) I get a similar effect, with corrupted jpegs, as described by dtdrepper before. Fortunately the file itself is not corrupted on the disk. I know this because I can still read and display the image in a proper way under windows XP.

Greetings
Martin

Little Endian vs. Big Endian (Just a theory)

Hi all,

might it be, that the problems with file corruption might be due to some little endian - big endian issue?

Just a theory...

It's a bit over my head, but wouldn't that make the issue processor dependent (i.e., whether Intel, G4, or G5 -- where Intel/NTFS should be the same as Intel/HFS)?

Dear Forum Visitors,

I have uploaded a new version to our web site:
