@Virtuoso congrats with your choice, it’s a great card! I have been running the same set up with 8 x Samsung 970 pro ssd’s (after snapping them up for a good price) getting about 12gb/s read & write for about 3 months. You can just remove the connector between the card and the fans. The ssds & card stays cooled sufficiently through the great fans of the Mac Pro 2019 and the aluminum cooling element of the Highpoint card. 100% silent.

Sorry to say, but something is really wrong with your SATA controller. Why not a slot deeper? Then the card does not have to be bent like this.

Hi all, I have highpoint 7101a installed on 7,1, and the drives are actually working fine. however, the controller does not show up under NVMExpress; they only show up in "PCI". Am I missing a driver?

Asking about this as I hope to install Innie and make the drives appear internal.

There is no SSD controller on a SSD7101a or any other switched card since switches are not shown with System Information. The SSD controller is on the blade itself and Apple did not developed a way to show the controller for 3rd party NVMe SSDs with System Information.

You see the SSD controller for the Apple SSD with NVMExpress because the SSD controller is inside the T2 of 2019 Mac Pro and System Information knows how to find it.

I have three NVMe's in a HighPoint SSD7505 which is in a Netstor NA255A connected to a MacPro3,1 and System Information.app shows them. One of them is shown as an Apple SSD Controller for some reason.

Is there anyone who can test the M.2 980 Pro inside a MP 5,1 with a standard adapter to awnser my questions?

Is the 980 Pro full compatible? Did you get the full speed of ~1500 MB/s in the standard adapter? Bootable?

@tsialex I wonder if there's a way to switch from raid managed by highpoint 7101a to raid managed by MacOS disk utility, without having to re-format the drives?

I'm debating on switching from Sabrent Rocket 1T NVMe's to Samsung on my 7,1. Only reason I'm thinking about it is cache performance for Adobe After Effects. I seem to be hitting bottle necks when generating previews with lots of layers/effects and I think it's down to the caching of the sabrents.

I'm finding it difficult to work out which version I should go for between the 970 Pro and the 980 pro.... even after reading a bunch of articles / reviews.

I know that the 980's are PCI4 so I'm only concerned about PCI3 performance. The 980's are cheaper by quite a bit...but the 970 pro's are tried and tested.

I'll eventually be using them in a highpoint or Sonnet card but, for now, the set-up will be:

Existing - Sabrent Rocket Q - 1 x 1TB as general documents (currently via a dumb NVMe card)
Replace with - Samsung 980 pro 1 or 2 TB
Existing - Sabrent Rocket - 2 x 1TB as cache/scratch set to Raid 0 (currently via 2 dumb NVMe cards)
Replace both with - Samsung 980 pro 1TB

Your insights always appreciated!

Probably not. Disk Utility puts some info on the drives so that all the partitions of a RAID are known to each other.
Whatever info HighPoint uses will be different (and might not be located on the drive?)

I'll eventually be using them in a highpoint or Sonnet card but, for now, the set-up will be:
A PCIe gen 4 HighPoint card will let you use PCIe gen 4 NVMe devices at their full speed.

Using the OWC 1M2 PCIE nvme adapter on a 7.1 Mac Pro, I only seem to be getting around 1g/s write speeds, read speeds are closer to 3k.

This is on both a WD 750N 2TB nvme and a Adata 8200 2TB nvme

Any idea what could be happening? They are in 8x slots on the Mac Pro

Interesting, thanks.

"The 970 Pro does not use an SLC cache at all and therefore doesn't fall from the same "write cliff" that the 980 eventually does. In the longest-running test above—the 1MiB random write, which we ran using fio rather than CrystalDiskMark like the others—this gives the 970 Pro a chance to start running cleanly away from the 980 before the test ends."

So seems that the 970 Pro might be better suited to writing/reading GBs of cache over a sustained period.

My 2tb wd black 750n is getting slower write speeds, around 1000mb/s on a owc 1m2 pcie adapter, vs my Adata which gets 2500+

is there a known issue with this nvme possibly? Same pcie slot tested, so it’s the drive

NO BOOT

Installed a Startech PEX8M2E2 8x PCI Express to Dual M.2 PCIe SSD Adapter in PCI slot 2 in my 5,1 on HS 10.13.6 MP51.0089.B00.

Also installed on the card a single SK Hynix Gold P31 SSD 1TB.

The machine will not boot.

First time installing an NVME adapter in this computer. Tried it with the SSD in either slot, still will not boot. The progress bar on the apple screen gets to the end an then the screen shuts off and a warning screen appears. I have attached the error report details that were shown once I booted after removing the card. It does not show the adapter card which is in slot 2.

The Starch is said to work in Mac OS and is a recommended card on the definitive upgrade guide. I got it new off Ebay at a discount. Wonder if there is a way to tell if it is bad... Or could it be some incompatibility with my firmware version? I don't have a metal card yet to jump up to 144 but the system profile does indicate NVME support.

Like is clearly explained on the first post of this thread, any MP51 firmware earlier than 140.0.0.0.0 don't support booting from NVMe drives.

Apple requires that you have a METAL supported GPU to upgrade your Mac Pro BootROM after MP51.0089.B00 (the last EFI firmware released with High Sierra), so you need to borrow one or do a BootROM reconstruction to overcome the requirement (since you have a cross-flashed early-2009 Mac Pro, you'll probably need it anyway).

Read all the details here:

Isn't the SK Hynix Gold P31 listed as being not compatible in the blade list in Post#1?
Gold P31: SK hynix controller: NVMe, M.2 blade
128 layer 4D NAND
Available in 500GB and 1 TB
Speeds: up to 3,200 MB/s read, up to 3,200 MB/s write
Sector size: Unknown (most likely 512 bytes per sector (emulated), 4 KBytes physical)
Compatibility status: Issues/not compatible
4Kn support: Unknown (most likely yes)
Really like this drive. Great performance/price. Will be interested to see if you can get it working.

Hi guys!

I want to buy one 2TB M.2 SSD for my MacPro 5.1.

I saw here on this thrend that the Sabrent SB-RKTQ-SB (gen3) works on MacPro 5.1, but I only found in my country the Sabrent SB-RKTQ4-SB 2TB (gen4) ...

Does the SB-RKTQ4-SB 2TB (gen4) also work on MacPro 5.1? Is it single or doubled sided blade?

It seems that the Aquacomputer KryoM.2 EVO PCIe Card would be a good choice for the Sabrent SSD, but what is the correct model for the SB-RKTQ4-SB 2TB (gen4)? Aquacomputer KryoM.2 EVO or Aquacomputer KryoM.2?

Thanks in advance

I wouldn’t get a “q”. Just a regular rocket. Sabrent also do a pcie adapter. Pretty much the same as the kryo but the heat sink is better and you don’t need to remove a PCI slot cover from the case. I currently use 2 of these in a raid 0.

I see you said the the pci 4 version is the only one available to you?

Not 100% sure but it should work. make sure you can return it if not.

Hi! Thanks for your response!

I only found this version SB-RKTQ4-SB 2TB (gen4) in my country. I didn't find any other version or another brand, except the Samsung 970 EVO Plus (but I don't know if it already have the new firmware 2B2QEXM7...) so maybe would be safer to buy this Sabrent ... but for that I need to know if this version (gen4) is compatible with my MacPro 5.1 and what version of Kryom.2 I”ll need...
