I'm no fan for subscriptions (renting software). I tried using Photoshop Elements for awhile, but it lacked a couple of features that are important to me. So, earlier this year I reluctantly bought a subscription to PS images.jpeg

^^^^Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried Affinity in the past. My, I guess special needs, are concerned with printing. With PS I can create, resize and print how I want where I want on a page. I can work with more than one output and resize and place them on a page where and how I want. So far, only PS meets my requirements.

Yes. I noticed there’s a CCC version 6. Perhaps that one provides better functionality with Big Sur. I’m still using version 5. I did a clean install and now transferring with Migration Assistant.
You'll need a version later than 5.1. Right now I'm using V6.03 Beta 2. This thread covers how to correctly deploy it.

The P31 Gold 2 TB is working well in the 6,1 so far. Idle temp is about 45 degrees C. That's about 10 degrees lower than I was seeing for the 970 Evo Plus and about the same as the Toshiba/Kioxia XG5-P.

Maybe I couldn't get it working because I was booted off a spinning HDD in a USB 3 enclosure that was very slow. It took a half hour for the Mac to boot. When I used Migration Assistant it was transferring at about 30 mb/s. I can't stand that anymore. So I got a TB3 enclosure for the old NVMe SSD with the idea of connecting it with Apple's TB3 to TB1/2 adapter, but I found out the adapter doesn't pass along power. So now I need a TB3 dock that is powered. I was looking online at reviews and they all seem terrible. I wonder if there is one that isn't ridiculously priced and junk.

I think I saw that OWC has a TB4 hub https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/TB4HUB5P/ ... wonder if anyone here has used one? OWC appears to have burned a few people here and has a bad reputation.

I saw a thread where some people pre-ordered ones, but I haven't read anything about how good or bad it is yet. I bought an Envoy Pro enclosure for an Apple SSD and it corrupted the disk so I had to send it back. I got a replacement, but I haven't used it yet. The TB3 enclosure I got is from them too. I hope it's good.

I have this. It's pretty solid. But what you really want is this unobtainium:

I got ti too. IT has 4 thunderbolt 4 plugs (3 usable, one to the computer) and 4 10gbit USBA ports.

The OWC has issues maintaining 20gbit connection via the apple thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter (and seems to go down to 10gbit speed) while the cal digit seems to give me the full 20gbit.

However, not sure, I havent tested this, the OWC claims to give you full 65watt per port even when using multiple ports. Most hubs split the wattage amongst the ports. So if you plug in something to each port, that last port has a lot less juice for your devices.

It says "Provides up to 60W Power Delivery via host port". There's only one host port.
1.5A for type A port.
15W for type C ports.

well, when i look what goes on in activity monitor, on older system like snow leopard, lion, it looks way less cluttered.
on the newer systems *mavericks and beyond so many processes are running in background , makes one wonder what they do, and effectively slowing the system, but thats just my opinion.
also i found older system on mac os more stable, but not that i have alot of experience with it.
on the mp5,1 the sm951 was good experience, but they were hard to come by. effectively, not many macs are actually capable of holding those ahci ssd, probably. for the record, snow leopard on the sm951 is really fast, as it should.

I had a NVME drive on a Highpoint 7101A which ended up crashing - macOS wouldn't start at all.

I gave up on that but got a Sonnet card that can take 4 drives. I was extremely surprised that with those same drives it actually booted up my old Mojave install immediately.

I cleared out that install because it wasn't needed now. Putting the two Samsung 980 Pro NVMEs in raid0 resulted in 4800mb/sec speeds. ?

Sorry if this question has been asked before, I'm lookung to upgrade from dual boot Mojave and W10 MP 5,1 currently on two seperate SSD in the SATA II bays, to a faster but not costly PCIE solution. Ive been reading this thread.

Am I correct that I could use two KryoM.2 with 970 EVO for example, one for MAC OS the other W10 and be able to boot from either?

Is there a dual M.2 card option that I could achive the same using 1 PCIE slot?

Hi,need a bit of imput, I've read the first post and many of the pages of this thread. Before was on the fence between OWC and Sonnet but decided to go for the Sonnet Silent version but have a few doubts regarding SSD choice.
From the compatibility list provided from Sonnet ( https://sonnettech.com/support/downloads/manuals/M2_compatibility.pdf ) I can see that some PCIe 4.0 NVMEs are supported although not their limits speeds, Sonnet states they would be capped at somewhere around 3500MB/s. It does whoever seem to present an opportunity to buy some 4.0 cheaper NVME, Im looking at the Crucial P5 Plus 500 GB wich retails here cheaper than Samsung Evo Plus 500 GB. It doesnt come in the compatibility chart thought. Any thoughts/ feedback on this route? Do most (all?) PCIe 4.0 NVMEs come close to 3500MB/s when used in a 3.0 card?

I can report success with a Samsung 980 Pro 2TB on a cMP 5,1 in an Amfeltec Squid 4x Gen 2 carrier board (SKU 086-01), running Mojave (10.14.6) and the 144.0.0.0.0 Boot ROM.

I still boot off an old AHCI SM951, but all my work files (Logic, Final Cut, Lightroom) are on the nVME 980 Pro. No problems after running for a couple of weeks. First I tried to get a 970 non-Pro non-EVO, but prices were high and supplies short. An Amazon merchant actually shipped me a 970 EVO "by mistake", which I returned because I didn't want to deal with Samsung firmware updates. After a while I gave up and decided to try the cheaper and more easily obtainable 980 Pro, and it has been great so far.

I was concerned because I have seen reports on here of the 980 failing for some people, but those problems were with different M2 carrier boards. Apparently if you have one of the more-expensive "PCIe switch" cards that is PCIe 3 compliant (see the list of suggested PCIe cards in post #1), it should (in theory) work. I also saw this success report with the 980 in a RIITOP 2x adapter.

Right now on Amazon US the 980 Pro and non-Pro 1TB are about $100 less than the 970 Pro and non-Pro. Only the 970 EVO Plus is cheaper, but I didn't want that version because of required firmware updates to make it happy with the Mac Pro.

Two years ago 970 EVO Plus required firmware updates, not since. I doubt that you would get sent a two years old blade now.

Btw, the 980 normal (not EVO, not PRO) is based on a DRAM-less SSD controller and it's now considered an entry level blade.

Apologies, I didn't notice the 970/980 references.

Hi, I have a 4,1 > 5,1 mac pro, Big Sur via Martin LO's opencore. I work in video editing and I have two questions:
1- What is the best choice between Highpoint SSD7101A-1 or SSD7104 or Rocket R1104 at this moment, to work with my cMP and why? They seems very similars and I don't understand the differences and compatibility
2- Sabrent SSD (2TB) are good with card above? What is better: QLC or TLC and why?
Thank you!

I'm confused. In the sticky page one of this thread it still says the 970 EVO Plus requires a firmware update.

Regardless, I'm looking for a 2TB NVMe for use on a cMP 5,1 mounted to an Angelbirds Wings PX1. What's my best bet of all the cards? More focused on reliability/future compatibility than cost. Thanks so much.

You are mistaken and I edited the first post to make it even more clear. Samsung is making 970 EVO+ blades with the Mac Pro compatible firmware since around September/October 2019. The chance of buying a brand new blade right now and get a blade made before September 2019 is extremely remote.

Btw, the firmware version is usually printed on the label - at least for my SM951/SM961/970-Pro.

970 EVO Plus is an excellent 2TB model, 980 series have issues when not used on a PCIe switched card.

There are other blades cheaper, but QLC should be avoided. Look at the first post and use the search on the thread to see what users say.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. Given I'm not using a PCIe switched card and I just want a reliable reasonably priced card, sounds like the 970 EVO Plus is the best option.

My plan is to mount it on an Angelbirds Wings PX1 card in Slot-2 next to my current 970 EVO 1TB Boot NVMe mounted on a KryoM.2 in slot 3.
