Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus runs fine on the internal slot in Mac Pro 6,1 with the Sintech-C adapter and Catalina OS. Showing x4 5.0 GT/s which is as fast as it gets on this machine (PCIe 2.0).

Returned the Sabrent Rocket 4 I was trying to get running in an OWC Mercury Helios Thunderbolt 2 enclosure. Never got it to run more than x4 2.5 GT/s there (PCIe 1.0). Ran fine at x4 8.0 GT/s in a Glortrends Thunderbolt 3 enclosure. So I imagine you would get that speed with PCIe 3.0.
Does anyone know if the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus will boot on the Mac Pro 5,1 in slot 2?

FYI - Crucial P3 Plus PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD 1TB boots in slot 2 on my 4.1>5,1 CMP. No problems to report.
 
I recently bought the 2TB version of this SSD. I also confirm it boots fine on a 5.1 Mac Pro running OCLP and Monterey.
Good to know you're able to run Monterey/OCLP on your 5.1. Off topi obviously but I'm repeatedly struggling to get it to install over the top of Mojave and work.
 
I just picked up a Mac Pro 7,1 and was looking to get a HighPoint 7104 to add storage. Will it be possible to boot MacOS (e.g. Ventura, Sonoma, etc) from one of the NVMe's as the default boot drive if they will all be set up as JBODs on the 7104?

No, your macOS boot/main disk needs to be completely independent, no JBOD or RAID array.

Thanks, I was suspecting that from the HighPoint documentation but wasn't certain since it seems like a pretty significant limitation.

What are the available options for having a default MacOS boot drive that is not the original Apple SSD in the 7,1?

Are there any other internal PCIe options?
Or could MacOS be bootable from 2.5" SSDs used in the internal SATA ports or internal USB port?

You can install macOS to a single M.2 (outside any form of array, you can use the other 3 or 7 other disks as an array) of a multiple M.2 switched card, single M.2 PCIe adapter or even to the internal SATA ports.

You can connect compatible SATA SSDs to the internal ports, no problem.

Thanks for the info! Just to make sure I understand correctly, if I have a 7104 with each of the four installed NVMe's running independently and not in any type of RAID array, then any of those four NVME's can be set up as MacOS or Windows boot drives?

I wanted to thank everyone here for all their help and the amazing contributions to the mac scene. I'm on my way to doing pixlas mod (thankfully i didn't cook my mac with my radeon vii).

i am using the TXB122 (link here), which works great. i use it in an x4 slot so i can give the titan ridge card access to the second x16 slot. i dual boot mac and pc, so this gives me good speed in both (1500-2000mbps).

however, this particular nvme adapter card can only fit one heatsink to an nvme drive (two heatsinks on two nvme drives will not fit). my question is, can anyone recommend a mac pro 5,1/4,1 nvme adapter card that is compatible and can accomodate two nvme drives with their heatsinks? thanks.

I'm curious about your choice of slot-2 usage, since the Titan Ridge and all other AIC cards are currently x4 or less lanes.

Not that the TXB122 will work much better with the slot-2, since unfortunately is also a x4 root port PCIe switch, but you will have less latency and better compatibility avoiding dual PCIe switches.
 
thanks for your reply, i guess i forgot about the pcie 2.0 aspect, wanting to give the titan ridge more bandwidth.

it sounds like it would make more sense to get a dual pcie x16 switch so i can dual boot with max speeds on each?

Won't make a difference for the TB3 AIC, will be somewhat better for the NVMe.

Btw, some firmwares/SSDTs for the GC-TitanRidge card require specifically that you install it to the PCIe slot-4.

Why would they make it an x8 physical card if the upstream is only x4? Seems like they're trying to trick people. Unless the bridge is not actually an ASM2812. The former is more likely.
I suppose one could connect the TB3 AIC to one of the M.2 ports of the TXB122 to get full speed Thunderbolt > 2 GB/s but it would be a mess of cables and mounting of the TB3 AIC.

These low cost Chinese PCIe switched cards have frequent changes between batches and I don't doubt that they make a PCB based on a reference/generic design and then produce/sell it with any PCIe switches that they can get.

I don't remember ever seeing a PCIe switched card with a PCIe v3.0/3.1 switch cheaper than the TXB122.

They are not in the compatibility list in the first post yet. Anybody knows, if they work?

Windows OS, yes. MacOS. No,(at this time). But that may be due to the disk connection issue as opposed to outright incompatibility.
