Here’s my solution to the noisy fan in the Syba / IO-Crest SI-PEX40129. It’s a 2-pin extension cable with an inline resistor to reduce the voltage going to the fan to make it run slower and quieter, supposedly by 30%.

Interesting yes i did notice the fan noise as soon as I installed a Crest I/O it and it seems to run constantly
I use my computer in the same room I record in so it is an issue, will have to look into this

I simply removed the fan completely and have been running 2 x Samsung 970 EVO for more than 8 months now. So far I didn't experience any performance throttle. I think the very massive and thick heatsink is more than enough to cool down the switch as well as the blades.

^^^^Am I the only one with a quiet fan on my I/O Crest card?

Maybe the overall noise coming from your machine is already high and therefore the fan is just another layer. All of my fans are running at idle RPM except for the CPU.

I just received the I/O crest and noticed there was blue tape on the foam pads on both the heat sink and the board. Should the blue plastic be left in place or removed?

Thanks!

Hi! I'm new here, Thanks to everyone for your great job in this forum!
Have a CMP 5,1 mid 2010 original, 2xXEON 5690, 96 GB RAM, Samsung 951 AHCI in Wings PX1 slot 3, Nvidia GTX 1080 flashed MVC, and EVO 970 2TB in Wings PX1 slot 4, USB 3 Card in slot 2, High Sierra 10.13.6 ROM
MP51.0084.B00

I want to buy the the Syba / IO-Crest SI-PEX40129 only for storage and scratch files for video editing, don't want to boot from NMVE because I´m fine with the SM951 AHCI. My question is: Do I have to upgrade the bootrom to 144.0.0.0.0 if I want to get the full speed of the SI-PEX (2200 Write - 3000 Read MB/s in slot 2 x16) or can I stay in MP51.0084.B00? I would change my 970 EVO from the PX1 card to the SI-PEX and add another NMVE for more storage.
I have to stay in High Sierra because of the Nvidia GPU, so I can´t upgrade to Mojave.

Thanks!

Yes, you have to upgrade your BootROM to 144.0.0.0.0. Apple started the 5GT/s support with 138.0.0.0.0, NVMe boot support with 140.0.0.0.0.

You can upgrade to 144.0.0.0.0 and still use High Sierra with NVIDIA GPUs, no problem, read what you have to do with the first post of the thread MP5,1: What you have to do to upgrade to Mojave (BootROM upgrade instructions thread).

I´ve read your instructions, correct me if I'm wrong. After disconnecting any 4k or DP 1.2 display and disable Filevault2, First I have to put my original ATI 5770 and download the High Sierra 10.13.6 full installer from the Mac App Store and do the firmware upgrade as asked (and don´t install High Sierra again) . Once done, I should have MP51.0089.B00 bootROM. After that, I could put my Nvidia 1080 flashed MVC and repeat the same steps downloading Mojave 10.14.6 installer from the app store and only upgrade the firmware. Am I right?

Thank you again!

Yes. If you have problems, start from a clean install of Sierra on a SATA disk, then upgrade to High Sierra.

Thanks guys. I might get me an IO-Crest, I got a second 970EVO lying ready.
What speed can I expect? Can I boot when in RAID?

IO-Crest have a PCIe 3.0 x8 switch, so you can get a little less than 3000MB/s total. Last macOS release that supports RAID booting is High Sierra.

There are lots of post about it, use the search.

Is there a way to make an external disk appear like an internal one? Remove the eject option, prevent it from showing on the desktop with other external disks (don't want to remove true external disks)...

^^^^Any disk can be ejected (dismounted). Internal or external, doesn't matter. As far as appearance, using copy and paste you can make the icon anything you want.

Photoshop 6 Ext (boxed, not CC) does not appear to recognize the Samsung EVO blades on the I/O Crest (slot 2) as potential scratch disks. (It uses a funky modal dialog box) By contrast, volumes on the blades can be used for RAW cache storage in Bridge accompanying the same addition of PS.

Does this occur in LR CC? MAcPro5,1, macOS 10.13.6; boot ROM flashed with Mojave firmware update.

Thx
