The 275 seems to have some problems - find the posts by peskaa earlier - even when properly injected following a boot with an Nvidia card like the 120. A good read of this thread would help.

The GTX 275 just doesn't seem to work, no matter what is done - I've tried GT 120 and 7300GT cards as helpers, even tried an 8800GT powered externally.

My ultimate solution was to buy a 2009 iMac with a 4870, and cross my fingers that a 5870 will be released in the future.

Works for GT120 in 1st Gen...cheapest way to do 24" LED via MDP

Came across a GT120 and tried it out in my 1st Gen.

Using Netkas little hack, it functions beautifully.

A little too well, perhaps.

While Apple would REALLY like to call it a GT120, it's own System Profiler calls it a 9500 GT. Yet other software sees it as a GT120.

Note that 30" Cinema DIsplay is running via MDP to DVI DUal Link adapter.

I don't have a genuine Apple LED 24", but the fact that MDP to DVI DUal Link adapter works seems to indicate that it would run a 24" LED Cinema Display.

Thanks again to Netkas. So, if somebody REALLY wants a 24" LED CInema and has a 7300GT now, here is cheapest way to get there.

Bioshock wasn't really playable at 30" res with candy turned on.

New, interesting discovery & first unasisted OSX Nvidia flash

Just made another interesting discovery that makes me think Netkas was closer than he knew to getting PC Nvidia cards to work WITHOUT an EFI assist card.

I discovered that if I have a PC 9800GT in slots 1 and 3, using ATY_init makes card in slot 1 WORK !!!

That's right, neither card has an EFI ROM. So, whatever this gag gets from 2nd card, it has nothing to do with "EFI helper card" as was originally thought. Oddly, no matter how many lanes the card in slot 3 is allotted, it only seems to be using 1 lane. I tried multiple resets and reboots with the Expansion Slot Utility, always came back with 1 lane for card in slot 3.

Sadly, I don't have any other PC Nvidia cards at the moment, but I can also tell you that using a PC 9800GT in slot 3 allows me to use a Mac EFI64 GTX285 in slot 1 of 1st Gen Mac Pro.

I found this intriguing so I tried to let it boot with only a 9800GT in slot 1. Nothing came up on screen, so I tried the volume button ....and it worked.

I fired up MacBook and logged in via Screen Sharing. There was a desktop of 1280x1024.

I was able to open terminal and FLASH the 9800GT into a Mac 8800GT for EFI32, via the Macbook and the NVFlasher util.

Sure enough, when I clicked on "Restart". up it came !!!

So I am quite certain that this is first time a PC Nvidia card has been flashed in OSX without an additional EFI helper card.

This means that if Cindori ever comes back from his LONGGG WEEKENDDDD, he could make Zeus able to flash MANY PC Nvidia cards using this same Screen Sharing method.

I am also hopeful that Netkas may find some piece of info here that wouyld help make ATY_Init work WITHOUT a helper card, whatever the helper is doing.

Hi all, this is my first post on this forum.

Just yesterday my 8800gt passed away sigh. I have read lots of thread about using pc card on my mac pro 1.1 but now im really confused.

My "big" problem is all about getting the "easy" way to put a new card on my old mac pro. Reading here and there i see 2 different way: the first flashing a card, second way using another apple nvidia card as secondary video card (as help for the pc card with injector? im right?)

if i buy a 285 (or other card) and i flash it with a mac efi bios im able to put the gfx card on my mac and just turn it on with no file/kext modding, injector, nvenabler and company?

any suggestion or tips? or i have to buy another 8800gt for first gen mac pro?

the flashing way is the more easy?

Thanks in advice for any reply =)

Best Regard
ciao

Typo / Bug in GTX285 Drivers?

My tireless and tiresome efforts to get 5870 working have led to a small discovery.

I was using Spanky Deluxe's Ioregistry Report to see what differed from his WORKING 5970 versus my BUGGERED 5870 install.

I noticed that the control path for mine was some ACPI dealie, and his a completely different thing...."attached GPU control path." If you look at that piece, you see that it ends with AGPM.

AGPM is a kext from Apple. It stands for "Apple Graphics Power Management."

I decided to dig into it and see why it was loaded on Spanky's machine but not mine.

I noticed that the only Mac Pro in the profiles is the 4,1. And then below that are 2 cards listed, the two Nvidia cards. I decided to try to get this kext to connect with my GTX285. I modded the profile to be for Mac Pro 1,1 and it still had no effect. Then I had another look at those device ids. 0640 is the GT120 and then the 06e2 must be the GTX285, yes? But then I realized that my GTX285 has id of 06e3.

Turns out 06e2 is for a GTX260, not the 285.

So, I modded that string as well and restarted. And something DID change. The screen came up at a different resolution and the fan stayed running high well until after desktop loaded. Never seen that behavior before.

I was not able to see the AGPM anywhere in the system info however, though it may not work well considering that the rest of ICs and controllers it is looking for are likely not there.

But very interesting anyway.

I looked at older versions of the kext...all had 06e2 instead of 06e3.

And then I remembered all the fuss about how early GTX285 reports were that it was doing weird throttling.

I find it hard to believe that if this is actually a mistake that NOBODY has caught it in all this time. I imagine that this is some leftover strings and that AGPM is run from somewhere else.

Also curious ow the AGPM is working in a Hack to run 5870 when 5870 isn't even mentioned in the kext. So, obviously there is more going on behind the scenes.

If there is someone with a Mac Pro 4,1 and a GTX285 and some time on their hands, might be interesting to see what modding that string does.

Possible that early development for GTX285 was done with GTX260 and this is leftovers from that time and completely nonessential. Would be interesting if next OS update fixed it......

And I would still like to figure out if this will be needed to make 5870 work properly.

7300GT "Helper" with GTX 285, Snow Leopard 10.6.4 Mac Pro 1,1

Hi Guys,

New to the forums and have been doing lots of reading on netkas' injector methods.

Quite simply, I was wondering if anyone has tested and had success with an EVGA GTX 285 running Snow Leopard (10.6.4) on a Mac Pro 1st Gen (1,1) using the injectors and 7300GT as the helper card? If so, would I be able to run a monitor off of the GTX 285?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all the info!

yep, you will be able to.

Only limitations will be that the GTX285 needs to be in SLot 1 and the 7300 in SLot 3 or Slot 4.

And everytime you boot, the 7300 will ALWAYS think it has a monitor connected to it.

Will work best if you do, otherwise you will need to connect display to 7300 then move it to GTX285.

Awesome! And thanks for the speedy reply.

From what I can tell, this upgrade is totally worth it for the obvious GPU boost - am I right?

Rom, you're in LA - same here - don't suppose you have an extra 285 that you'd like to sell?

No, but Ebay and Craigslist is full of them. I do have a 2 Gig card I could sell you, but as you can read in the "2 Gig Bug" thread...not especially useful until Apple teaches Mac Pro to count higher than 1,536.

Just be sure to get a GTX285...not sure the GTX280 will work.

Hey Rom - do you know if this will work on a Mac Pro 1,1? Were you using the 1gig model or the 512?

And you only had aty_init installed? Thinking of trying this method. Were you able to get the HDMI port on the card to work?

Thanks man! Keep up the great work.

Up until last week, a 1,1 was all I had.

Not sure which 9800GT has an HDMI port.

I have never gotten G92 cards to see more than 512 Megs as I have GOTTEN 0 (ZERO) HELP SEWING NVIDIA ROMS !!! Would help us all immensely to figure out how to do this but nobody wants to take time to figure out.

Most 9800GTs will have an out of control fan with 8800GT rom on them. Some early ones work fine, the later die shrink ones used different fan control circuit.

So based off of your experience, what is the best option (your recommendation) for someone looking to upgrade their Mac Pro 1,1 which currently has 7300GT?

So, an update - I installed a 9800GT 512MB into the Mac Pro with ATY_init installed. Booted the machine - death. The machine begins to (sounds like) load the various components and then boom, goes into some weird sleep/shutdown limbo.

I am sure that the card caused this, because I pulled it, put the 7300GT back in and the computer is functioning normally.

Any idea as to why this is happening and if so, what I can do to correct it? FWIW, I'm powering the card through the G5 cable (6 pin).

Any info would be GREATLY appreciated as I am stuck and at a loss. Rom, have you ever encountered anything like this?

An update to this - I was able to get the machine to boot and to get to the point where it was time to flash the card, except neither nvflash nor zeus can detect the 9800GT - ideas?

The system does see the card, but it reports it as just a generic card made by NVIDIA. Stuck again!

PLEASE try actually reading this thread instead of skimming it.

I am 100% certain that the 9800GT would work IF YOU READ THIS THREAD AND FOLLOWED DIRECTIONS.

No need for hate - I did follow the directions exactly as you wrote them (and I've read these forums thoroughly) but I'm fairly sure I had a card that differed substantially from the one that you ran your initial tests on (see HDMI port on this ver of the 9800GT vs. the one you had that probably had dual DVI).

Don't worry though (I know you won't) - you guys are doing your thing with the cards you have so no hard feelings. I'll try and patch through XP bootcamp style.

Not trying to get into a flame war here, just thought someone might have encountered the issue before.

uGhh

1. install ATY_INIT

2. PUT 7300GT in slot 3 (be sure it is set to 4 lanes or more)

3. 9800gt in slot 1

4. boot...9800gt will work one computer reaches desktop, no flashing needed

Mac Pro 1,1 + 7300GT + GTX260

Just wanted to say thanks to you guys!! Brought home Starcraft II the other day and the program scoffed at my 7300 GT, went out, grabbed the GTX 260 (since it was just about the only thing I could find locally), and after some playing around got it all working.

My setup:
Mac Pro 1,1
10.6.
BFG GTX260 OC in slot 1
7300GT in slot 3

Used the Enabler_for_Nvidia_and_multiple_ATI_cards.pkg
Set to 4 lanes on slot 3

Everything works and SC II runs pretty well now on higher settings.

When I run OpenGL Ext. Manager tests, OpenGL 3 fails; is this normal?

Am I going to have to switch the DVI cable each time I boot or is there some sort of hack for this?

Again, you guys rock, thanks for everything you've done.

So glad to hear this !!!

Netkas wrote a really nice piece of software that allows 1,1 folks the option to run almost ANY Nvidia card. (provided there is another one present)

OpenGL 3.0 has yet to be written into OSX drivers, Apple's fault I would say. Windows is well past us there.

So rare that somebody figures out and uses this.

Sadly, the 7300GT requires the cable switch at boot, or you need to add another monitor.

Thanks for trying this out and thanks for posting !!!

(GTX260 can run CIRCLES around that 7300GT...enjoy yourself !!!)

Yeah, I kinda figured. My work around is to just use a DVI-VGA adapter on the 7300GT, DVI on the GTX260, and have both cards connected at the same time.

To do this you have to set the displays to mirror, is this going to result in a decrease in performance?

If it does, I guess maybe a cheapo DVI switch would work as a cable switch...

Hi and thanks in advance.

I have been reading all 18 pages of this thread and it seems very promising.

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 w/ 10.6.4 with an 8800gt in it now. I am hoping to have my friend bring over his XFX GTX260 Black Edition some time soon to try this in my machine before I make the purchase. What my question is, if I install the enabler will it force me to use 2 cards or can I continue using my 8800gt after testing just like I am now until I purchase my own 2xx GTX or will there be something that I will need to uninstall to get it back to normal. And, is the enabler the only thing I need to install or are there drivers needed as well?

I would love to be able to use a GTX285 in my 1,1 in OS X.

One other thing... does this work at all with a GTX 4xx series card?

Again thanks!

Installing the enabler won't force you to use two cards.

With 10.6.4, the enabler is the only thing you need to install.

From what I've read from netkas' blog, the 4xx series won't work on the 1,1 MacPro.

Thank you for your reply. I kind of figured the 4xx series wouldn't work. Looks like I will be buying a 285 GTX really soon :)

I have a XFX Nvidia GTX285 card

Will this ROM from EVGA work with my card? I am having second thoughts about trying it. Secondly, the link in your initial post does not seem to follow. Is there a backup repository for this ROM? I am so desperate to get my GTX285 working...
