I don't own one, but the 512gb comes with an extra 2gb of ram.

So what.
The should have “rewarded” their customers with nvme storage not ufs and 2 extra gigs of ram.

Ufs over nvme is a cheap move.

Going by your posts sounds like you bought one, hope you didn’t pay full price.

I don't own one. Im not sure what to get next.

While I understand the incredulity at what appears at first excessive, it’s been the same story for 30+ years: every time a computer came out with more storage, people would say”what are you gonna do with that much? You’ll never use it”, and yet the hard drives always filled up. Also, “no one needs a color monitor”; “no one needs a GUI: command line is all you need”; “no one needs a processor that fast or that much RAM”, etc. People find ways to make use of the new and improved that they hadn’t been able to imagine previously.

I had to start being judicious about what I was putting on my 256gb iPhone because the photos, video and music were taking up a lot of space. I backup my pics and videos to Google Photos but I don’t like using it: opening photos, vids, and scrolling is comparatively slow even on a decent cellular connection. Public WiFi is few and far between, and when you can find it, it’s a pain to connect, and it’s typically very slow, at least in my experience. I almost ran out of space on vacation taking 4K video. Downloading movies and tv shows was out of the question until I backed up and purged a lot of stuff. I’ll take as much storage as I can get.

Just to add fuel to the argument...
There is a reason many android users hold that SD card slot in the face of iOS users, and why Apple gets bashed for releasing iPhones with a lot less storage than the crapdroid counterparts.
It's always one of the topics brought up, no matter what the comparison is.. someone brings up the SD card slot on their android.

I honestly do have to give them a point for that, a small point... but they do win the storage debate. Apple wants streaming instead of actual storage.
It's why companies like Sandisk make the lightning adapter to allow a SD card or flash storage to the iOS device.
This and similar exist for a reason.. you may not need it, but there are those that do.

If 512 ram has a special color or other signs on the iPhone, I probably also buy to do, where everyone knows $ 1,500 item on my hand :cool::cool::cool:hhhaha

read.my.lips (or rather my words):

BECAUSE I WANTED TO AND BECAUSE I CAN

the cellular where i work is absolute, total CRAP so anything i want decently is on my phone. plus i want all my pictures and videos on my phone so if i want one i have access to it.....
but why do i have to explain that to you.

You don't have to...?

I wasn't accusing anyone of anything. I was genuinely curious what the uses are for half a terabyte of storage on an iPhone.

I have the 256gb iPhone X now and most of my data is in the cloud and stream all my tv and movies. Usually every 6 months I do a wipe of my phone and start new. Come to think of it, I’m actually paying for 2tb a month on iCloud.

I’m still glad I got the 256gb because I did shoot 2 weddings on my iPhone in 4K in FilmicPro with the Moment Lens and Movi Freefly. I filled 3/4 of the space each wedding I did.

I have another wedding I might be videographing this coming year so 512gb won’t hurt to get.

With all that said I preordered the maxed Max.

It’s overkill for me since my digital life and entertainment is all on the cloud. To be completely honest and candid, I usually Pre-order the maxed out model iPhone because it usually is the least pre-ordered and ha e abetted guarantee to get it on launch day.

I don't understand the purpose of making these threads when you know the answer. People either:
1. Need the space
2. Think they'll need the space
If there was a 1TB, I'd buy it.

Maybe people want to know *what* the 512GB is being filled up with.

I don't even use 512GB on my computer to be honest. I'm not a media hoarder so I would never need that much space. With iCloud Photo Library, that's even more the case, as photos and videos take up the most space for me.

I've used 100GB on my current X, so 256 is a nice safe spot for me where I don't have to worry about filling it up.

I imagine some people put tons of movies, apps, photos, and backups of older iPhones throughout the years which all takes up a lot of space, thus the 512.

I have 130GB used of 256GB in my iPhone X, I storage all photos on the device, and have several music albums downloaded from my Apple Music Library, and I've synced some TV episodes with Plex. I don't use much more than this. It would be cool to have 1/2 a TB on my iPhone but I literally don't need it.

Money to burn, plus my kids are cute and I take a tons of pics. Over 40k on my X right now.

40K photos, wow! I thought my 6000 was a lot haha

I’m struggling to get up to 32GB on my 128 7!

I guess there are always those who are packrats - they just have to carry everything that they own with them.

Then there are those that are recording/photographing every aspect of their lives. 4K video with stereo wil chew up a lot of space. I mean those who are part of the generation that just does that (just because) and those with kids who want to record every second of their lives (I’m part of neither as you can probably tell!)

There are professionals who are using the iPhone out in the field to take photo and video for their reportage etc. Then you want as much storage as possible.

And finally... those who just want the bragging rights.

It was interesting to read answers. I guess I want to be organized. I am a photographer, but I always keep only the best and most important photos. I have 1000 on my phone. I use spotify. Do not have a sinle game. No video content. So I use 20 gb of 64 available

512GB is the ultimate storage at this age. I can fill it with several movies, tv shows, etc which I can enjoy whenever WiFi or cellular connection is not available or off line As you know, free WiFi is hackable. The extra storage can be used for other emergency things also. There is never too much storage, which makes its usage longer.

Below 512 GB can be useful but at some points, it has its limits. 64, 128 and 256 GB are ancients and obsolete. You will see what I am saying eventually especially when the technology is getting more advanced. iCloud is helpful but not helpful when there is no WiFi or cellular connection. Free Wifi cannot be relied on the security due to extremely vulnerable risks of getting hacked when you use it.

512 GB is also the first highest storage in the iPhone history. Having it is a pride for all of us who are fortunate to be able to have it.

You feel ‘Pride’ for owning a mobile device with 512gb ram?

Perhaps I’m aiming too high in life.....

Yea I didn’t want 64gb and stress out. I would have been happy with a 128gb but there was no option so 256gb it is.

Word. I have a 64gb plus and ran into the cap. 128gb would be perfect. I could not fill the 256 7 plus but i don't want the 64gb xs plus

I do stream music sometimes, but I also have most of my own music in my phone. Same with thousands of my picture, and lots of podcasts for when I’m out of range.

I only have about 30GB free on my 256GB X, and I H A T E having to delete stuff just so I can record video or whatever. I can’t see 30GB lasting me through the next year, so I went with the 512 for the XS I ordered.

I am a space whore. I love space. Lots of it. That's all.

And because I'd like to start really ramping up the amount of 4K videos I shoot.

If you definitely shoot 4K video and take lots of photos, considering softwate updates and media/applications, 256 GB would probably be my max, but 512 GB is an incredible amount of storage. I’m actually surprised Apple offered 512 GB this year, and I thought that was maybe one of the bogus rumors.

I guess there are always those who are packrats - they just have to carry everything that they own with them.

I personally spend time away from any wifi or even cell service.. so "just stream what I need" does not work for me. It's either I pre load it, or I don't have it. Prior to my 256gb I really had to manage what I put on the iPhone, thats why I figured i'd never need more than the 256. Now I have not run out of space... yet, but I have had to do a little management here and there to make sure I had extra room.
Picked up the 512 so I could avoid it happening.

On the other side though.. same with backpacks. You don't buy the biggest backpack you can get, cause you will end up stuffing as much as you can into it and it becomes heavier than you can carry.
I don't want a 1tb, or larger iPhone cause I would store more on it.. I hope I have hit my largest storage purchase. I thought it was 256gb..

But like I said before App size is not decreasing, and Pics/Videos that people take take up the majority of the iPhones room. And with the ability to take 4k video and HDR photos.. space will fill up quicker than you think.

Because who needs money? Lol

Actually it’s because I want all my music on my phone so that whatever I’m in the mood for I’ll have it without using data. Also makes it so that third party music apps like KaiserTone can play it without having to download it from Apple Music first. Plus I have some music that is a different and for me preferred version than what Apple Music has.

I have enough music as well as pics and apps that I get the low storage warning. I would like that to stop so I choose 512 GB over offloading some music.

Backup? Well since the music doesn’t get backed up it doesn’t take a huge amount of time. The music is on my MacBook. I turn off iCloud music library and sync it up then turn iCloud music back on. Works very well with only a few anomalies that have been addressed.

I read posts on this thread in general and realize that I live a bery frugal life. Can afford many things, but only have the bare minimum, things that are truly needed.

I take a lot of 4K videos and lots of photos and also hate pulling them from the cloud to enjoy them.

I’d have gone for the 512 GB model but I decided to splurge on the gold SS watch this time instead and keep it at least two years.

Next year I hope to max out the storage. I’m hoping for a ProMotion display next year and new camera hardware, perhaps a triple lens module and for that model, I’ll likely go all out.
