After getting the replacement battery today I was hard at working finding which OS X would install. Trying High Sierra, El Capitan & Yosemite. Finally thought I would try Sierra and BOOM!! It worked.

Also the new battery fixed the lagging so all is sweet now :D

Got High Sierra installed now. Had to actually use the 19mb installer from the app store and do an internet install which I didn't want to (would rather download the whole thing and install locally) but it was the only way to install High Sierra.

Go for Catalina. Works like charm. Or at least Mojave. High Sierra is not supported any more.

Go for Catalina
Speaking about Catalina I did a test install on a usb 120gb ssd and it ran alright so I then did a full install on the 1tb ssd. Runs pretty fluid and scrolling thru websites is soo fast and smooth.

Ok, next , maybe you would like, as me, to change the bluetooh/wifi adapter, so you can have 11ac, and qll the options for handoff, hotspot, etc, etc. You have two options:

I have two of these. Works like a charm. New supplies soon.

This newer. Cheaper, as you buy the model of modulen that you want where you want.

in a few days they wil go for sale.

There many many working 2011 macbooks out there. It´s a pretty solid mac.

Macbook pro 17" is still my favourite mac.

I actually did a little reading about those 2 wifi/bt upgrades just a day or 2 ago. Maybe in the future I might upgrade but I hardly use bt on a computer and wifi N is sufficient for most things and streaming. Just did a file copy test @ 25MB/s using the deco m5 mesh network :D

@dosdude1 : is it somehow possible to activate screen brightness control ability through keyboard on BigSur? Under Catalina is works like a charm on a MBP8,3 , but I tried big sur today with open core legacy incl. HD3000 beta driver and the brightness is not working.

Is there a driver for HD3000 in Catalina??

A beta driver, yes! Check Open Core Legacy
Great! I will try later. I´m happy with Catalina but it is good to know that I can run Big Sur once Catalina is out of support. Any change in the default settings that I hace to?

Check the open core legacy website for installation instructions. Basically, create the usb media and run the patcher. After installation re-run the patcher to set open core as standard EFI bootloader and that’s it. The only issue, I mentioned, are the missing screen (and Keyboard) brightness adjustments possibilities. The rest is working just fine for now.

Mmmmh, that’s weird…I just followed all information given on the website. But, there is also a YT Video, which shows it visually, what needs to be done. Do you want the link via PM?

Install the backlight patch package for High Sierra, it should work. Not 100% sure if it will install properly though, due to the way Big Sur handles root volume APFS snapshots.

I have done before with later versions of OCLP without any problem. Don´t know what is happening with this version. Thanks.

@dosdude1 : BCP for HS doesn’t work in BigSur. Trying to install it and get a error message at the end.
Do you have Any other suggestions?
Oh, I forgot that Big Sur handles kextcache differently. I'd honestly recommend sticking with Catalina anyways, as the acceleration patches for Big Sur are extremely buggy.

I have a 17" 2011 Macbook Pro that has Catalina installed, and I can't get the Thunderebolt port to work as for hooking up an external TV monitor through a mini displayport to hdmi adapter.. The computer doesn't see anything connected.. Is there a patch for this, or do I need to install Sierra?

External display output cannot work with the AMD GPU disabled.
