You post some very nice images, but the background on this one is *really* busy, so much so that it completely draws my eye away from the apple buds and almost becomes the subject with the apple buds being a distraction. I think this is made worse by the apple buds being relatively underexposed compared to the background. Just my 2 coppers and take it with a grain of salt :)

Mine for today. Was a foggy morning with rain and I decided to go to a nearby spot to take some pics prior to a meeting. Was holding an umbrella in my left hand while I took this. Luckily it was a light lens ;)

Yes, I think you're right. I knew there was something less than perfect - maybe if I had used spot exposure on just the buds?

Cheers :)

Old charcoal kilns , up in the hills around Death Valley . They're a lot bigger than they seem ; you can walk into them without bending .

5D2 , 17-40@32 , f8@1/180 , ISO 100 , B&W done via Silver Efex .
Interesting. With nothing to scale I'd have thought they would have been much smaller.

Not to knock Doylem but if it were me and I had the money and just a smidge of talent, I'd be knocking on Joe King's door:). His night shots are just the business and now he's doing landscapes. Oh to be so lucky, or maybe good. Cheers
This is very flattering but I don't think I have either the confidence or the patience to be a teacher! When I was starting out (both in photography and posting on this board) I always found Doylem's posts here to be an inspiration in terms of the direction I wanted to be heading and a great many of his posts with tips, advice etc. to be useful. If I was ever in the area I'd probably sign up for one of his workshops.

I think photography courses or classes depends on the company where you applied for there are companies that are reliable and trusted like https://www.skillshare.com/browse/photography

Agreed. This one is with the Leica Akadamie so hopefully I am in good hands. I will let you guys know how it is as it starts tonight. I am hoping to head out to Gleneagles about lunchtime to get some shots before it starts. Very curious about who else will attend.

Zabriskie Point . Taken just after sunrise . Vantage point was a bit higher and off to the side from where Ansel Adams shot back in the '40's ( If you have access to Ansel Adams-400 Photographs , look around page 190) . Definitely a morning site , was there in the late afternoon and it was pretty much blah , everything washed out .

Thanks for the kind words, Joe. My nomadic lifestyle, living in a tiny motorhome, made it impossible to carry on with the workshops. I wasn't unhappy to give up, to be honest. The workshops could be quite stressful (especially when the weather was disobliging!), and a lot of people seemed reluctant to do anything except talk about their cameras.

I'm travelling around the UK, doing pix for a couple of book projects, and would be happy to meet up with any MR folk to chat about photography over a beer or two. Check out my blog, for where I am at the moment: http://broken-cloud.blogspot.co.uk/

Is this image confusing on the eye?

Just mine maybe?

The soft light on subject and background has let them meld together despite the DOF differential.

Yep it does confuse my eyes.

Love the colours though.

Yes you're probably right. We discussed further back in the thread that the background may be over exposed. I should have spot metered on the blossom buds.
It's all a great learning experience and I still don't think of everything I need to do at the right moment ;)

Cheers :)

Its not ideal to try and shoot sports with a fixed 35mm lens I guess...but at least you do get to see a wider perspective

Love this a lot and see absolutely no reason to question the use of WA in sports. A fine example of why it should be used.

I think that the main problem might be the busy bokeh Hugh. I've whacked on a radial filter and a vignette and it's still struggling to pop out from the background.

That was a really quick and dirty edit with a screencap of the original image so it was never going to be optimal.

Yeah well, I was aiming for busy bokeh, and that I got

Mamiya C330 + Portra 400

Enjoyed using Portra in my old studio. Medium Format Bronicas doing portrait work mostly with the occasional outdoor job. This really shows that beautiful subtle but intense colour I remember.
I think you can see in your image how the soft skin tones of a lovely face could be rendered.

Really like thisimage. Thank you.
