Alaska's Denali

PHD_3886%20-%20Version%202-L.jpg

Denali…"the Great One" (aka Mt. McKinley) is the highest peak in North America at 20,320 feet (6,193 metres). Although a lower peak elevation, when measured from base to peak (vertical rise), it's larger than Everest.

Photo of the Day August 2014

Been watching this for a while so figured I'd throw in my piece of rubbish ...

Don't call a Speedmaster Pro a load of rubbish! That's one of my future purchases after I've sold one of my internal organs.

Here's one of my Orient Bambino and then I'm done with the watch pics for a while, I promise.

Now, THAT is a nice timepiece! I regret the day I sold mine and they have gotten SO expensive since.

Nice capture there, maybe a more cheeky angle next time though? :)

Haven't they just! I've coveted them for years and I very nearly bought one back in 2009 when I got made redundant at work and had a bit of cash as a payoff. I took the decision to not spend £1600 on one considering I didn't have another job lined up and now I really regret it as they're nearly £3k. Crazy how Swatch has inflated the costs across the industry with their dominance of the movement business.

Yup ... the Speedmaster's pretty good , it's been my 'daily driver' since I got it about 25 years back . Absolutely troublefree . Like you , I've wanted to get my hands on a Portugese for many years ( The rose gold one ) . Oddly , now that I'm retired , and could write the check to get one , it's not that important any more . When I left work , my retirement gift to me ( one of them) was a 1979 Seiko Jumbo , I can wear it without guilt , and without worrying about getting whacked over the head for it ,unlike the IWC .

Is that a goat and a chandelier? how the hell did you get those two to align?

interesting picture BTW.

The Portuguese was my 40th birthday gift to myself so it is special to me in lots of ways. Strange though that you say that about getting bumped for it. I always thought the uneducated preferred to target Rolex wearers and I havent had any undue attention for the IWC.

I really like the Speedmaster. It has some heritage about it, something unique. I didnt realise that the reason the Daytona wasnt considered in the Nasa tests was because Rolex refused to loan Nasa some test units.

Was also funny to read about the pressure testing. All testing on watches was done under pressure not strain fundamental misjudgement on the direction of the forces of space. Result was all the crystals popped off the Speedmasters in space :) If you ring Omega, they are usually happy to send you a copy of the book if you havent got one already.

I suppose now you are kicking back enjoying the result of your labour, you dont need a watch so much but that Seiko sounds mighty nice too.

Mission San Juan Capistrano...

Day 11: Mission San Juan Capistrano by Puckman2012, on Flickr

Still trying to decide if I like this angle.

angle is nice

I took the liberty to make a post prod suggestion :)

thought that this photo's subject does require a wide format and stamping out the distractions around (people, palm trees, a mini hifi? and a plant). some marginal contrast added too, not much.

all in all, a nice photo indeed!!

Nicely done! Thank you. I usually don't do any cloning (i'm not good at it). But this image certainly benefits from removing the distrations.

That aside. If you don't mind doing me a favor. Take a look at the other angles I took of the same subject (on my Flckr page). For me, this is an exercise in finding that right composition, with an object of interest in the foreground of a wide angle landscapey shot. Let me know if you think any particular ones work better than the others.

Thanks.

0307, 0308 are definitely not worth it, allow me to suggest to even remove them from your flickr. 0305 is a nice general overview of the place, though I would crop it (or stamp out) the trees on the far right.

If I had to choose one though, that would be the one you posted with the edits I suggested. :D

referring right and wrong composition, I don't think such a thing exists. it works or it doesn't, and it works for some people, and for others it doesn't

It must have been a couple of weeks since I posted a watch picture so here's one I took yesterday of my beloved Mako.

Fujifilm XE1 with XF35mm

Orients are sooooo under appreciated. They need more love. Bought one for my son and he loves it.

You're right. I think they get some props amongst those who enjoy affordables in the watch world but the rest of the world are yet to appreciate how good they are.

I was massively surprised at the quality and accuracy of my Orients when I got them as you can't buy a decent auto with an in-house movement this cheaply and expect it to be this good. Cracking watches.

Don't have any guilt about the IWC , it'll last you the rest of your life . If I had one , it'd be my luck to run into the only thug in NYC with some taste.
Retirement's great , highly recommended , when the time comes to get out , you'll know . But I still need a watch !! gotta know what time it is so I can get to the diner on time for my monthly breakfast with the other old guys.:)
