Where there's smoke there's... water?

Now that you mention it, it does look CG. There was even very little post involved. Just some levels and minor cleanup.
This was another image out of the Splash class. I did this one in the school's studio. It is actually a very simple shot - a balloon filled with water and food coloring and hung by a string. The setup was some Profoto strobes, a sound trigger, and a stick with a pin on the end. You set the shutter for two or three seconds and the sound trigger controls the strobes. You can dial in the millisecond delay between the sound and the strobe trigger.
Sorry, I don't recall the trigger they used. I then adjusted levels and color in Lightroom with a bit of cleanup in Photoshop. The final image was rotated 90 degrees. The smoke and water image above was done at home with Einstein strobes and the Pluto trigger.
Yeah it was a simple balloon pop but I really like the end result. I've experimented with a balloon inside of a balloon too.
I'll be playing with this some more after the annual trek to Burning Man. Now I'm in full prep mode for that adventure. This year I'll be on the playa for build week as well so a full 16 days in the dust.
