Harumph! Didnt think of that at the time... too busy running after the girls who had ditched me for doing my "annoying camera thing"...
i never had the nerve to take a random photo of a subject without asking.
except for 2 Saturdays ago for a Flickr group thread.

I could never take a picture directly of a stranger in the street for fear of confrontation but for architecture and landscape stuff, never been worried.

Where there's smoke there's... water?

Amazing - almost CGI in appearance

Now that you mention it, it does look CG. There was even very little post involved. Just some levels and minor cleanup.

Care to share the set up and settings on this awesome pick?

This was another image out of the Splash class. I did this one in the school's studio. It is actually a very simple shot - a balloon filled with water and food coloring and hung by a string. The setup was some Profoto strobes, a sound trigger, and a stick with a pin on the end. You set the shutter for two or three seconds and the sound trigger controls the strobes. You can dial in the millisecond delay between the sound and the strobe trigger.

Sorry, I don't recall the trigger they used. I then adjusted levels and color in Lightroom with a bit of cleanup in Photoshop. The final image was rotated 90 degrees. The smoke and water image above was done at home with Einstein strobes and the Pluto trigger.

Jeff, that's brilliant! I gather this was a further experiment with what achieved those micro spots of liquid in an earlier image? To me it looks like liquid that's been affected by sound in some strong way! I sense a fantastic series to come from these for you.

Yeah it was a simple balloon pop but I really like the end result. I've experimented with a balloon inside of a balloon too.

I'll be playing with this some more after the annual trek to Burning Man. Now I'm in full prep mode for that adventure. This year I'll be on the playa for build week as well so a full 16 days in the dust.

A dragonfly. On an alligator.

Did you help the gator out by swatting the dragonfly?

Around here it’s the blue heron. They don’t like the publicity. Closest I ever got to one was when one flew in front of my car while going down the highway. Thankfully our timing worked out, as they aren’t the fastest at take off. We missed each other by 50 feet. I think I would have won that battle.

I'll have to find that some day. I haven't seen it since I moved.

I did just clean the sensor on one of the D800s. Need to get the other one done so I can go abuse it for a fifth year at Burning Man. ;)

Was it after burning man last year you posted pictures of the cameras looking like they had been dug up in the desert?

Now you know I am a fan of your macro work but if I maybe so bold as to make a suggestion, I think this one needs a little bit more DoF.
