Thanks for all the feedback! I wasn’t sure if the orange helped bring out the yellow-orange in the butterfly. It’s entirely out of focus, so I guess the eye just accepts the splash of color. We now have 2 tiger swallowtails in the area. Very tame, graceful, beautiful creatures.

Related, I am really liking the 40-150 pro and the E-M5iii’s digital zoom/focus feature. It really helps to nail the focus on these types of shots. I’m ending up with quite a few more keepers now. If your camera has this feature, I’d recommend having it programed to one of your buttons for this type of photography.

The one that didn't make the cut for the Shadow Contest, at the old abattoirs I am documenting that is getting repurposed.

Just for example, I am posting the same image twice, to illustrate the crushing of blacks happening on this forum. I'll post externally from now on with my images, so they appear as I intended them to be! No insult meant to the forum gods in any way, I truly love your work, this is a special safe corner of the Interwebz for me to visit and enjoy.

Call me crazy, but I can’t tell the difference on them. Your native Flickr shot does have more detail. I’ve heard that some forums will still reprocess externally hosted photos too.

That is the penalty of viewing on a phone, I guess. I can clearly see the difference on my 27" calibrated monitor and the iPad Pro, but not on my iPhone 11 Pro Max! This screen is supposed to be the bees knees of colour dynamics! 😱

Yeah, I‘m viewing from my own iPad Pro (2020 model), and they look the same. Maybe it’s how the site host mobile browsers? Like it’s reducing quality for the sake of saving RAM and mobile data? Very odd. Anyway, I don’t know if this will work, but here is the screenshot of the 2 from my iPad. I’m not sure if it will look different to you, or if both will look the same like they do for me:

That appears different on my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9"! There's a lot more shadow detail in the off site hosted image. I wonder if it's a browser thing? I am viewing on Firefox on the iPad and my iPhone. I could see there possibly being a lighter bandwidth/lower IQ version broadcast for the phone. Are you viewing on Safari on your iPad Pro?

The top one seems duller to me, viewed on my 8+. The blacks are the same but the purple seems almost matte.

Yes, I noticed a compression or simplification of colour tones too in the images hosted on the forum on every device. I am bemused as to the 11 Pro Max not showing any difference, when I view the image on my photos app it is blatantly different! It seems to be a web and device based issue! Considering the vast majority of people use their mobile phones to view things that changes what I can share if I want people to be able to enjoy the editing I have gone with, especially for shadow and colour detail that has subtlety to it. Damn it! Why don't people have 27" calibrated phones? ;)

To be fair my son is color blind and there is a theory that mothers of color blind children see more colors than the average person.
I’ve heard the color blind gene is passed down by the mother (my dad is color blind, but I am not), but I hadn’t heard the part about the mother seeing even more colors before. That’s pretty wild if that‘s the case!

While I worked in theatres, the best lighting operators were always women! They had far greater ability than men to discern subtleties of colour differences thrown through the coloured gels by the lighting equipment!

My brother is colorblind which means my mother is a carrier. Her father was also colorblind as well as my male cousins on her side. My mother used to quilt before arthritis had her stop and people always commented on her color choices as being extremely good. I suspect she and I are both tetrochromats even though it isn’t proven in humans. My daughter does not see color as well as I do which I hope means her potential sons will not be colorblind.

X-rite has a test to determine your color ability and I usually score around 97%.

Okay, so I wasn't fast, but I somehow managed to ace it? I'm curious how Mrs Darmok would do. :D

Sitting at my desk with blinding light to my immediate left and taking a couple of minutes to complete this, I also got a score of 0. I do have a regularly calibrated 27" monitor with full Adobe RGB coverage though and 20:20 vision still at 51.

May as well post this looking across my Magic Mouse to the sunshine streaming through the glass door to my left as my image for today seeing as to how far off-topic I have successfully steered things! Captured on iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Last one from the wildlife rescue/rehab center as the fox and bobcat didn't cooperate. Probably due to the light background, this one handled the forward fence the best of the three photos. None of the blotchy gray artifacts on the emu photo, but very subtle. Notice how the artifacts exist as lines that would be interpreted as normal bokeh at first glance, then notice they form the chain link fence design. Overall, was an interesting exercise.

I took the test mentioned above.
Three different times at differing light levels.

Can't seem to do better than a 6. Monitor is calibrated from the factory, sRGB.

That's a 6! It's still pretty dang good! Did you see the worst score for us men! 8484 😱 Must have been viewing it on an old B&W Rank Arena TV from the early 60's. 🤣

We have the hue test at work. Little colour caps you have to put in a row under controlled lighting.

It's a new monitor.

I suspect it's my eyes ;)

So, now the sun is up higher....
Better light.
Scored well.

Could well be. Mine aren’t getting better with age! Probably should book an eye test at some point. It’s been a good few years.
