another bang up shot! we haven't had many butterflies this year. i am hoping they will still come around soon. I've seen two monarchs total and a handful of swallowtails, but none on my zinnias yet.
It’s only been a few here as well. 2 tiger swallowtails, what I think is a spicebush swallowtail, a random monarch, many cabbage moths, and tons of these little dudes that my kids like to catch and release. August seems to be about the time when we get more. Last year, there was a week or so where there were monarchs all over the place as they migrated south. And I mean everywhere, not just the gardens, but just drifting around the skies.

Edit: Looking at my photo history, the monarchs peaked in early October last year.

yes, I had most of my butterflies late August through September. I don't see a lot of monarchs here, but we do get some. Typically I get a ton of swallowtails. I did plant some milkweed this spring, so I am hoping in the next year or two maybe some monarchs will find my garden.

Also, for that color test, I said I usually score around a 97; I meant in the in the 97th percentile. I haven't done it in awhile. I get tripped up on a few blue tones, probably because blue is my least favorite color. 🙂 I am impressed with you men scoring perfectly! The men in my family (even those who aren't colorblind) are fairly oblivious to color. 😉

I would suspect that many who venture into artistic feilds like photography probably fair better than average. Part of photography, IMO, is realizing there’s an interesting moment there to capture, and so often that’s a moment of pleasing colors—much like what you just posted!

After some experimentation, I managed this moon shot...

Nikon D300S, Sigma 150-600mm, 1/400 @ f/6.3, ISO 1600, hand held, no PP apart from cropping.

Cheers :)

Hugh

I also had a go at the moon handheld last night. Could do with a longer lens than a 230mm to be honest.

XT3 with XC50-230 @F6.7, 230mm, 1/340, ISO320

Well my big lens is large, heavy and was a tad expensive, but it's opened up a lot more that I can photograph, and I love it!
If your back is still bad, hand holding with a big lump like that might become awkward ;)

Cheers :)

Thankfully my back seems to have resolved itself now so maybe I could get a larger, heavier lens......no no no.....stop it Hugh! I've just spent over £2k on camera gear I can't go spending any more.

How about going half way and getting a 1.4 or 2.0 TC? That way you can see how much you actually need a longer lens.

Cheers :)

Actually, I took the test that @mollyc linked & achieved a score of 2; despite poor eyesight, I have enjoyed an excellent sense of - & awareness of - colour since childhood.

Nevertheless, re the (perhaps improbable) numbers of "perfect scores of perfect zeroes" I would expect a thread replete with a number of exceptionally accomplished photographers to have a heightened sensitivity to - & awareness of - colour.

No I'm just saying I know my eyes and colour perception isn't perfect, yet we've all scored 100%!

That seems a little odd to me, to be frank..... Something is wonky there with that test!

I've got a cataract developing (slowly) in one eye (which does affect color perception) and even though I've always had great color perception throughout my life and would normally be cheered by a great result, yet when I, too, scored "0" this time, that really just doesn't seem right to me. If I didn't have this slowly-ripening cataract I'd say, "oh, wow! My color vision is still amazingly stellar!" but I am really suspicious of the results this online test is throwing out to everyone.
