inspired by valdore's amazing HDR images, I tried my hand at it...out in the freezing rain. Crappy framing and poorly focused, but I just wanted to see what was needed to get an HDR image.

Any idea how to fix the blown highlights. I am using Photomatrix Pro, per your suggestion.

Thanks, Compuwar! It was nice meeting you there! Small world, eh?! I remember that last year I went a couple of times in early December and then the holiday busyness interfered; I was somewhat annoyed when I bought the new lens in anticipation of getting to use it there and never got to do so then because as you said, the eagles had gone by New Year's....

A bit of snow; (love the bokeh on 70-200 L :) and the surprising iso1600 performance on my xti)

I'm flattered. I like the vibrant colors of that photo coming from the wet pavement. White clip or black clip might help you fix highlights somewhat; they are controls in the Photomatix tone mapping editor.

Thanks for the comments Doylem and alecmcmahon. I was out with the intent to get good sky line pictures, but those two pictures of that tree ended up being my favorite for the night!

I haven't done much night photography......it's refreshing to take pictures that are different. I'll post a few more from that night....

The tree you see on the right is the same tree as the previous two pictures, but this time, it's not the focus of the shot. I was actually trying to take the street light on the far left completely out of the frame, but it ended up being in the shot. The flare it leaves is pretty cool though, so i didn't bother taking another one. i was getting too cold to stick around there.

Oregon coast
flood stage

In light of the severe winter storm we've been battered with here in the Pacific NW over the last two days, here's a shot of Willamette Falls during a previous flood. The falls ordinarily would have been where all the white water is, but the river below the falls was many (I don't know the height of the falls) feet higher than normal...thus the falls vanished. With all the rain and warmer temps here over the last few days, it could happen again. Scanned from print.

Nice picture. Id crop it a little better though, on the left and a little off the top. The left flare is very distracting.

same bridge - daytime!

[Edit] - yeah, the original looks much better than what is uploaded - I just thought it was fun to show the same pic in the daytime! Also, it was taken on a Rebel XT with a 70-300 lens at 1/4000 a few years ago. I think it was my first time out.

I'm a little surprised about the quality of that picture. You've got such nice gear I'm sort of confused how bad it looks :p (might just be the resizing)
