thanks seenew! i looked back in my lightroom folder for those pics, but it seems like I didn't think to crouch down off the ground for that particular one. Weird how sometimes one will think of these things at one time and not at another.

indeed, how sore I get from kicking myself sometimes.

Thanks MaddMacs! Nice shot! I'm surprised the puppy stayed still that long!

@seenew That's what I thought at first too, but I was there when it flew away. Those dragonflies sure are tricky :p

Great shots Doylem and Valdore - I love the feeling of isolation with the boat, (the one in the fog!)

D40, 18mm, 1.6s, f/3.5, ISO 200

My tripod is somewhere in the post but fortunately there was a handy balustrades. It was pretty gusty 200m up, the long exposures didn't give too much success! C&C appreciated as always.

Thanks... and I like the Paris shot. I feel I can wander all those streets (some I know... most I don't).

You'll enjoy the freedom of using a tripod. Sounds contradictory, but I love to set a shot up, and shoot as the light changes. It means I can walk around, eat a sandwich, and the composition is fixed (incidentally, this makes it easier, when reviewing the pix later, to find the best shot out of 20 or 30 or more)...

My favourite boat...

I really enjoy the lonely minimalism of this one.

I would crop this one differently to reduce the amount of sky and to give the tower more emphasis. The blue rays emanating from the tower look great, but they kind of get lost in the composition.

Mine for today, from the Sequoia Foothills:

My eye gets drawn to the text on the ship and then over to the bright (stadium?) lights at the left. I'd say crop out the stadium and much of the sky, but then you'd still be left with a photo that lacks enough tonal range and zones of depth to be really interesting. The ship is rather "close" to the line of the waterfront, making that horizontal zone feel rather compressed and the rest of the frame rather vacuous.

Love it. Great composition and such accommodating subjects!

Well spotted, poignant subject, and great lighting aside from the photographer's shadow in the shot. If only it had a shallower depth of field or else a vantage point that minimized the distraction of the barn in the background.
