Lovely warm light on the sterns of the boats...

Thanks... kind words from the master of light! ;)

You are right on the bird. They are so photogenic, and you caught this one in a great pose. Nice.

Dale

Thanks Dale. I've got one who flies along the creek behind my house, part of his territory - fully adult, beautiful.

It is a juvenile male Great Blue Heron. Males have the black feathers coming off of their heads which grow longer as they reach maturity. The wing coloring will darken with age, and the rest of the feathers will lengthen, including those on the front of the neck. Unlike most birds, the males are generally larger than the females.

When they're young like this, they'll generally allow approach to within 10-20 feet, sometimes closer with a lot of patience and familiarity. When they mature, you generally have 30-50' at the best, though occasionally small rivers, canals and inlets will give them enough comfort for closer approaches.

Paul

Thanks Paul. I appreciate the information, and confirmation of this bird's heritage. Now that I know the way to identify the younger ones, I might have a bit more success photographing them. The harbor seems to have plenty of them around, among other interesting wildlife.

Really nice pdxflint, love the golden reflections.

Many thanks. Sometimes these things are fleeting, and I was actually leaving for the day as the light was failing, and just thought I might capture a last image or two before the monotones of dusk set in. I probably had a minute at the most...

Yaquina Bay Bridge from the harbor at sundown...

Model: NIKON D300
ISO: 1600
Exposure: 1/4000 sec
Aperture: 4.0
Focal Length: 300mm

Note: for those who will ask why f/4 at 1/4000 sec at 1600 ISO, the answer is I was actually done shooting for the day, it was very cold (23ºF) and getting dark and I decided to just take a few last minute images in the direction of the light, having not really planned it - so I didn't change the settings on my camera, Aperture preferred @ISO 1600. If I spent more time, I'd probably stop it down a bit and maybe lower the ISO, but it is what it is...;)

the cold dark north
Shot 1 hour ago outside after snow had fallen all day. The star in the background is Christmas decoration in our window casting light onto the branch...Still amazed by the amount of detail you can capture with a 5d mk2....

Over there------->
Wow, they really show the scale of the ruins. That place is massive! How come tourists never do cool things for me

Excellent photo, BTW.

Oh, they will, you just have to watch them long enough. I saw this one coming and didn't have to wait long (from the same day):

I snapped this picture sometime around 7:30ish. I stayed awake all night and decided that I should take pictures in the sixteen degree weather when the sun first came up.

Why I stayed outside all night I'll never know...
