OK, so all this recent discussion about Lensbaby products got to me and one day last week out of sheer impulse I decided to just get one and experiment with it myself...... (Yeah, Hugh, I hear you laughing all the way across the Big Pond!!!!). I ordered the Sol 45, which came with three closeup filters as well. The package arrived yesterday. I unpacked it, read the instructions, tinkered with it, tilting the lens this way and that way, put it on the camera and changed my settings (on a Sony you have to enable "release [shutter] without lens"). I was already in manual, as I've been shooting all-manual (except focus) rather than in Aperture mode for some months now. I hurriedly pulled together something to shoot and a setup with backdrop and surface, and began experimenting.....
Conclusions: Hey, this is kind of fun!!! Focus Peaking helps significantly with acquiring focus, along with the time-honored macro tradition of gently rocking back-and-forth until you nail it. That allayed my concerns about manual focusing, and wasn't any more difficult than the few times I've done it with my regular macro lenses. This particular image was shot with the three closeup filters stacked together and mounted on the lens, too, so of course there was going to be very shallow DOF, but I still wanted at least something in focus anyway.
This is a fun little device and a different approach to shooting, and does offer interesting possibilities for creativity. I think I am going to enjoy playing with it from time to time!
