In a hotel room in Manhattan - insomnia - camera happened to be nearby. This is what I stared at while not sleeping. This was taken a while ago ... I wish I had cropped it and tweaked it a bit differently (which I suppose I could still do), but this is how I remember it, so I left it alone. The pictures on the wall were even creepier than the shadow play.

Your picture reminds me of so many hotels I visited around the world...I recall myself not being able to sleep at nite for whatever reason, just staring at the fan, that usually makes such a noise...(hello India).

Here's mine for the day. Actually my first picture ever on this forum. I really started photography with a DSLR 9 months ago....

location: Paris, france near Le louvre

40D + 10-20mm sigma

Taken from Mrs. Macquarie's Point one morning last June as the marine layer was burning off. This is an HDR based on 5 exposures with a 1EV difference between each exposure. It is processed in Photomatix Pro using the tone compressor method.

I thought we'd won the battle of the timg tags - but now it's happening all over again. What's going on?

Different moderator... it seems to be inconsistent and random with them. Since my images are all limited to 800 pix wide anyway, I just changed mine back... I don't mind someone messing with my post, as long as there is a valid and clear reason for it... which I haven't seen. If this gets me in trouble with the "authorities" here, then so be it.

cityatnight-1.jpg

Taken last night from a resturaunt on the 30th floor of a building here in town. The day was pretty cloudy, but it cleared up at night and I happened to have my 40D + 50 f/1.4 in the bag. Shot at ISO 200, f/8, 15 sec, set the camera on a window sill and used the 2 second self timer to get a good steady shot. Oddly the glass window on the building didn't seem to have a huge impact on the photo except the single building with the green neon top, which ghosted a second neon ring, I assume that was altered by the double pane window I was photographing through.

Points if anyone can name which city :)

That is absolutely stunning. I love cities, especially at night, and architecture of buildings. This is the type of photography that I'm hoping to get into. I don't know the city but it is beautiful at night.

There looks to be something a bit odd in the middle of the pic: over-sharpening perhaps? Then I saw the data. Why would you use a fast speed (1/2000 sec), high ISO and wide aperture (f2.8)? Not being critical... just curious...

A view and a brew...

Looks like PDX, looking east across the Willamette. Morrison, Hawthorne and I-5 bridges... maybe taken from the former US Bank tower...

PS: PDX = Portland, OR

Nailed it.

Venue was the Portland City Grill. That shot was a product of getting bored while listening to pharmacutical reps yabber on about the science behind clinical depression and how their new drug is the cure-all. Nice view, OK food, but man it's an expensive place, I caught a glimpse of the check and dinner for 50 people was over $6000, plus the $1200 they paid me. I guess Eli-Lilly can afford it though...

C&C always more than welcome.

Why would I choose this? It's not overly interesting, nor that well composed, but I liked the colours (strong yellow and red with the pale / pastel green of the plant to the left). I'd have gone for better framing, but I only had a t-shirt on, it was getting very nippy, and the sun was about to go down. May go back to get a more interesting framing tomorrow.
