constructive criticism welcome. also testing out my signature. thinking about turning down the opacity/size as it may be distracting.

Wide shots like this look good as panoramas and I like it. It's a good start for your first outing with a tripod at night.

thanks, i really appreciate that. but i'm just having trouble what application to use to crop the photos. preview is nice, because it's still a big picture when i crop it. but when i crop in photoshop, it seems like it gets smaller.

Nelson The ACTOR.

Whilst working on a short film project I am shooting on 16mm Black and White reversal film (it's cheap), I took this image with my puny little Canon HF10. I took it in black and white because you know we were shooting in black and white and I figured it would be cool to have the production stills in B&W. He wasn't particularly lit in this shot, but we were using an Omni lighting kit for the short. Speaking of which, I should go get that film developed!

If you crop the top of your pic, and then the bottom, then you've got a long, skinny photo... and that's that... ;)

Some people like these panoramic cityscapes, but I'm not so keen... merely because, IMO, they can end up looking much the same. I'd home in on a smaller area, for more conventionally-shaped compositions... but that's just me...

In capturing nights shots with a tripod, my only advice would be to shoot a bit earlier. There's a wonderful period - after sunset, but before the sky goes black - that's particularly photogenic.

You'll have a lot of fun, shooting with a tripod at twilight and beyond. It's a whole new world of possibilities...

If you are on Manual then pick a faster shutter speed. If it is too long there will be too much light and your moon will be washed out and you will lose your definition.

Adjust your exposure, as acearchie has pointed out. You can also do some pp when the image isn't completely lost. You have some detail in the features of the moon that can be brought out with an exposure compensation and definition enhancement. Working from your original will likely have better gains than the small sample below.

Whoa! ima try that now, maybe post the finished product after, also is it best to use a tripod with shots like that?

Your shutter wont actually be open for to long so I would say that you can get away without using a tripod.

Here are two pics for me today:

The first is a picture of my sister...

And the Second is pretty much a silhouette of a tree in Kenmore, Scotland taken last night.

As always any critique would be very appreciated!

Thanks

I would use a tripod and try bracketing your shot once you have established your exposure.

Here's mine for today. A departure from landscape... mostly because the days have been so grey lately.

Not my best shot technically. The cords in the background are quite distracting. I also made the shot from above rather than on her level (but in this specific case I think the rule needed to be broken). Light isn't close to perfect, but with a crazy Ocicat kitten I couldn't really set anything up. Pet shots (like baby shots) are in the eye of the beholder and parents tend to have skewed views of the photogenic potential of their babies. With all those disclaimers, I still like this shot.

My newest cat, Zoe.

I know I'm breaking the 2 in one day rule, but I haven't been posting regularly to this thread (work, work, work).

Here is another, more representative pic of my new cat Zoe. Still some distracting elements in the background. It's hard to get kittens to pose in an ideal spot.

well i was really really really far from the strip, and i only have a 18-55mm lens kit, soo i knew i'd have to crop it, but i didn't have a way to go about it besides this. i wish it was a bigger photo with the strip enlarged...but cropping it definitely did the trick compared to it's original size.
