And another from the black and white studio collection from my friends house...
This time using a nikon d100 (very old... 6MP, had to select iso with the function wheel :O) anyway, using some very ancient glass (50mm 2.8 macro) and deliberate grain - though i LOVE this kind of grain - because the camera lacks megapixels i think the grain produced is alot more aesthetically pleasing compared to the sort of grain/noise higher MP sensors produce. Anyway:

You mean that is the image as it came from the camera? If so that is simply staggering! I have really underestimated the low light abilities of these beauties!
yeah, on this photo in particular there was no brightness or contrast play, i simply desaturated everything but the cherry of the cigarette in photoshop. And i know right, full frame and just the camera in general is fantastic in low light! i wish i had that camera, haha :D

Well, it has a very clear focal point. The eye comes "home" at the orange pepper mill. The windows give the eye lots of encouragement to explore, but nothing pulls the eye out of the frame; it keeps coming back to that pepper mill. I especially like how the repeating forms of the mills in the shadows form a leading line to the one in the light. So the composition works beautifully. The whole image doesn't resolve for me into an "aha moment," though; that is, I don't find myself coming up with an idea as to why the pepper mill is important. Perhaps if I thought it about long enough I would come up with something. Nonetheless, it's an aesthetically successful image.

Okay okay i see what you mean :) perhaps i should have said clear subject, though upon second review it doesn't matter cause it is a very aesthetically pleasing image :)

Two questions, where did you shoot this from, and do you live in Vegas?

In capturing nights shots with a tripod, my only advice would be to shoot a bit earlier. There's a wonderful period - after sunset, but before the sky goes black - that's particularly photogenic.

melake.jpg

Having lived in Vegas for over 20 years, it has led me to believe that the casinos provide such an abundance of light that there seems to be an ambient night light throughout the city. Rarely does it get 'pitch' black here. Especially since the strip is lit up 24/7/365.

Also, if you wouldnt mind sharing the full res of your photo for today i would love to have it as a wallpaper. I recently got into Yoga, and i love the serenity your photo send out to me.

Not my best shot technically.

The cords are a little distracting, but the DOF is spot on. I'm not a fan of pets, but i really like this photo.

Mine for today is just one of my shoes. I have been doing more Manual Focusing, and i have to say, Im quite pleased with this shot. C&C Welcome....

Clickable....

Gorgeous cat!! I like the color palette of this image too.

I'm a sucker for kitten shots. Love this one. That is kitten defined. I have seen Stella in previous POTD months, is she an Octicat, too?

Thanks for all the kind words. Both Stella and Zoe are Ocicats. They have a somewhat exotic look with their spots. As a breed they are playful, intelligent, loving, and loyal.

Wow... really nice feel to this image. I love the arc of washed out snow that runs under the tree line. Great balance established with the sun set up diagonally from the large tree on the right. I get a real "ahhhh" feeling when I look at this image. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the compliment. Shooting into the sun is risky, but this one turned out nicely. The shot was all about the light, and waiting until it got interesting.

Here's another from the same series. Thanks for looking!

Total digital noob. Bought a new Nikon 10mp camera, for one main purpose: I am currently in the waiting room of the Labor & Delivery ward, waiting for the birth of my first grandchild. A new grandbaby necessitates a camera, not a phone that takes pictures. Anyways, Grandpas are much unneeded during the baby delivery process... so I had time to wander around and play with my camera.

Wandering around outside, took some shots of the US Flag which I found interesting.

Still waiting. Will probably post some baby pictures, at some point...

Dude, these are way to big. Replace the tag with a [img] tag. Just add "T". Please change the resolution to 72 or 96 dpi and limit the vertical size to 800 or 900 pixels. Also please limit your submissions to one photo per day.

Oh, and welcome.

Awesome. Thank you for that. I knew sure as heck I'd hear about that. Appreciate the info.

I edited my post after running your pic through PhotoShop to see how big is was. If you make the recommended changes and post from an online source you don't need the tags. They will be larger without stuffing the MR servers. That's what most of us do. And thanks for fixing your pic so fast.

Getting all sorts of info tonight.. Do you mind answering a few more follow-ups?

You say "recommended changes" -- which are those?
And "online source" -- I assume one of the photo-serving sites, Flickr et al?
I seem to have noticed that MobilMe is less than useful as a linking source...

Thanks again.

Sure. By changes I meant that your images were 300 dpi 12 X 9 inch files. That will give a print good enough to hang on my wall. Monitors these days are between 72 and 96 dpi, so that's all the resolution you need to post online. I take care of this in PhotoShop. First I save a full size file I might want to print or sell and then I reduce it to 96 dpi for posting to the forum. I keep my vertical size to about 850 pixels so that a portrait shot will fill the screen but not require scrolling to see all of it.

I use ImageShack for hosting my photos for posting. I keep a cleaner online gallery with Flickr. Some here use PhotoBucket and other sites. I don't know about MobilMe. Try making the changes I suggested to a photo before you upload it to MobilMe and see it it posts better. I have a PDF tutorial on how to use ImageShack and Flickr. I need to clean it up (it's not really professional grade...), but I can post the link here if you want to look at it.

Killakee Wedge Tomb

This small Bronze Age wedge tomb, found in Lord Massey's Woods in the Dublin Mountains, still has many stones in place but the cairn stone infill has mainly disappeared (most likely used a material for the dry stone wall that runs past the site), leaving just low skeletal remains, which may be why the site was not identified until 1978. It is very similar in layout to the two other wedge tombs in the Dublin Mountains found at Ballyedmonduff and Kilmashogue (pictures posted earlier in this thread). As can be seen in the picture, the stones forming the walls of the 4m long gallery are nearly all present as are many of the stones from the outer double walling.
