Alfred's back! I saw him yesterday for the first time in a couple of months when, startled, he flew from where he'd been standing in some weeds near the water's edge up to the roof of a nearby townhouse. I grabbed the camera and rushed out to the deck to get some shots. So happy to see him again! He looks a little shaggy in his winter plumage -- but hey, a guy's gotta keep warm......

Love Alfred’s pose! So regal like he’s modeling for GQ!

Tanagra (not really)
Love all the bird shots! I once rented a Canon 100-400mm lens and spent the week stalking all the birds in my yard/woods trying to get something halfway presentable. LOL
I’m eagerly awaiting a PL100-400 today. I shoot M43, so it’s the FF eq of 200-800mm. All my bird shots are currently taken with the Olympus 75-300ii—a very affordable and lightweight lens, though it takes some work on technique to get the best out of it because it is so light.

Yesterday afternoon I went out on the deck to get some fresh air and to see if the Hooded Mergansers were doing anything interesting.... Suddenly something went zipping past, too small and moving too quickly to be Alfred, flying over their heads, and I watched as the bird landed on the chains between the posts on our pier. I immediately raised the camera to my eye, zoomed in and realized that, hey, this is the elusive Belted Kingfisher that I'd been lucky enough to shoot once last summer! I started firing away at her, hoping she'd turn around to face me, but no such luck. I was just thrilled and surprised to have been able to see her again now, especially in the cold weather. I guess they don't migrate to warmer climates in the winter.

I'm really amazed and pleased at having been able to shoot this elusive little gal twice now -- Kingfishers are notably speedy, skittish and private, not often pausing out in the open, preferring to do their thing quickly and then sheltering within bushes, weeds or other areas where it is hard for anyone to see them or photograph them.

@Andy Ward is this an original photo taken by you?
The EXIF shows it as a screenshot, and I have found the same photo on line - Wallpaper Cave ;)

Cheers :)

Hugh
Good catch Hugh. I see he cropped most of the secondary rainbow to hide the pixel count. Certainly zero camera info in the EXIF. I guess as Pete Seeger's dad put it; 'Plagiarism is basic to all societies.'

My like has been withdrawn, until he posts the unenhanced EXIF present version without the crop.

Good luck with it . Going for new or new to you?
