I give up :D

yeah, that photo is all over the internet, going back to at least 2013. Can't find any official attribution for it.

Good catch Hugh. I see he cropped most of the secondary rainbow to hide the pixel count. Certainly zero camera info in the EXIF. I guess as Pete Seeger's dad put it; 'Plagiarism is basic to all societies.'

My like has been withdrawn, until he posts the unenhanced EXIF present version without the crop.
No need to give up @Hughmac It was an occasion like this that started the rule "The photograph must be your own work" in the weekly competition. Someone freely admitted the photo wasn't theirs and said they didn't realise. We'd never needed it until then. It's always possible to add it to the front of POTD. Even if someone doesn't read the rules we can point to it being there rather than an assumed from the other instructions.

A friend of mine returned his second hand copy today as it had a bit of fog. He’s ordered another second hand one.
Just curious. Aren’t they weather sealed?
I had to return a new to me Fuji XT20 late last year. Apart from being a bit more worn than the pictures led me to believe, it reeked of aftershave/perfume/deodorant. Being allergic to artificial perfumes I had to keep it well out of the way until I could send it back!

Caught in the act - hastily taken with iPad ;)

The Forth Bridge was the first bridge over the Firth of Forth to Fife, not counting the one much further up the Forth ... Yesterday, with iPhone 12P (unfiltered etc) .

Perhaps I should say more about the wall, as that was the focus I chose ;)

I found your facts for the first bridge over the Firth of Fourth to Fife to be finely fitting and photo-fantastic.

I've tried photographing birds in trees but all I see is wood, what camera/lens did you use? I'm being prompted to move on and "buy a proper camera" although I'm keen first to discover the limits of what the iPhone 12 Pro - and I - can do.
Although a good camera for a phone, anything at distance like wildlife is going to be challenging. You can buy telephoto lenses for them (I think @Hughmac might have one).

You're right, but the quality add on lenses max out at 60mm which is mainly for portraits. The 18mm wide angle is brilliant for landscapes though.
The only proper tele lenses are cheap Chinese plastic and definitely not to be recommended ;)

Cheers :)

Personal opinion only, but I'm all for exploring your current limits. Always asking yourself what is it you really want to do, and what you are missing. Hopefully when you are ready to spring you will know exactly what you want from that camera. Right now shopping in person may be difficult to impossible and many of us need to feel a camera in their hands before buying, so that may be another consideration.

For example the other night I had a gorgeous red fox pose for me in the headlights. Would love to have that image in my collection. But you can bet the farm if I did have a camera that had a long fast lens and delivered great results at an ISO of 2000+, that camera would not have been sitting beside me in the car.

Thanks for the comments. I do have a compact camera with better optical zoom. As you might suppose I tend not to have that in my pocket/hand when interesting opportunity arises. I opted for the 12 Pro as upgrade on the 7 as it has an acceptable form size but clearly the 12 Pro Max would have given me more zoom capability.

Hope these questions are OK here. Next up tomorrow is another view of that bridge ;)

This was taken with a DC-G9 and PL100-400 lens, though the following works on more affordable gear than this. The trick with longer lenses is using the zoom-focus feature, where you can zoom in digitally to help set your focus point on what you want. I find it incredibly helpful to get a good shot of a “bird in the bush.” Without it, it becomes more of a spray-and-pray approach, which is usually disappointing once you look at the final results. The shot above was taken at maybe 50 feet away, so technique is very important.

Yes, these questions are how we all learn, and who better to ask than a varied group of photographers such as we have here? Ask away! :)

I am a firm believer in using the camera that is at hand at the time a photo op arises, which may be a sudden event, rather than something thoughtfully planned out ahead -- so if I'm out somewhere, more than likely the only camera with me will be my iPhone 11 Pro. If I am traveling (gee, remember those days?) I will often have my small compact RX100 with me as well. At home, when I see some action going on out on the lake, my first move is to grab my "bridge" camera, the RX10 IV, and run out on the deck quickly. If the birdies are just leisurely drifting around out there I'll take the time to put the full-frame mirrorless A7R IV on a long lens and take the tripod out to the deck, too. When I"m thinking of a macro or tabletop shoot I'd like to try, the A7R IV comes to hand, along with a macro lens. It's my go-to combination much of the time during cold winter months when I'm in the house much more. Each of these camera bodies and lenses gets their turn to play, although the last two I mention do get much more time in my hands!

There's a lot from which to choose these days, so since right now going to a store and handling demo models isn't going to be possible, spend some time reading up on various brands, their offerings, and compare the differences between them. Look at what their features and functions are, begin thinking about what kinds of things you like to shoot most. Look at lenses, their various focal ranges and styles (prime vs zoom, for instance). Think about what would probably work best of you vis-a-vis the type of shots you like to get.

Lastly, but certainly not least, consider your budget, which of course will be important as well!

Sure. We are a friendly bunch here. But the best camera is always the one you have with you.
