The latest addition to the riverbank precinct in town, yet more square footage for the already over-sized convention centre! I went around the exterior of this thing a couple of times trying to find a view of it that was favourable and had it visually tie in to its adjoining section, with no luck at all. My opinion is that it is a stinking piece of fresh doggy-doo in that regard, looking like a poor-mans cheap attempt to nod their head in the general direction of Mr Gehry and his sublime angles and juxtapositions. What in the heck were the architects smoking to stick this on to the already existing part? It has no flow or connectivity at all and I reckon it should win a prize for being the ugliest convention centre in all of existence. I'll show a different view of it tomorrow, so you can see better how it physically joins with the already pre-existing section.

Sometimes, it is best to listen to your gut reactions and just leave an image alone, walking away from it when it doesn't deserve your attention. Just because it's new, doesn't always make it a suitable subject. o_O

Is there a trend for wonky buildings right now? Dublin Bord Gas theatre is skew whiff like this too or is there some accoustic benefit for the funky angles?

Nice but I really hope you shot that with a super telephoto!

LOL...I'm still safe and sound Ken.

This shot of the bear and a couple shots of Timber Wolves and Coyotes that I'll put up later were taken recently at a nature reserve. I'm not a big fan of zoos and animals in captivity. Nothing against those who do enjoy a visit to a zoo...they just don't work for me personally.

This nature reserve felt a bit different. No two ways about it...the animals are still being held in captivity but the captive areas are huge and, besides the fence, completely natural without fake, rocks, trees and water features and...the animals are all indigenous.

I could also mention that the reason I went in the first place was to see and photograph Timber Wolf pups (something I'll never have an opportunity to do in the wild) but all this simply sounds like, and is, a way to try and reconcile in my mind the dilemma of my own personal moral and ethical beliefs of animals in captivity vs animals in the wild.

The debate with myself continues...

This reminds of of the way I feel about the addition they put on the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto... :(

So the backend of a clock at Chirk Castle. Not the view you normally get to see. I know the direct sunlight through the window has blown the highlights, but I like the effect.

Comments welcome.

I like it too AFB and the backlighting works very well. I think that sometimes we spend way too much time and effort avoiding clipped highlights and deep shadows rather than excepting a view of things as they really are.

The verandah at Cliffdale . Guess I'm late to the party ,didn't get my invitation , probably an oversight , or more likely lost in the mail . Just as well .... Tux probably doesn't fit anymore...

As best as I can figure , my viewpoint is around where the left rear white column is located facing outward from the house toward where the shot below was taken...

A portrait of my very good friend from a recent photowalk. As many of you know I'm more a landscape / travel / adventure photography kind of guy so portraits are definitely kind of new to me. Getting out of my comfort zone here. Looking forward to any C&C as always, thank you! :)

I like the treatment and the pose but there's a bit too much dead space up top for my liking. I'd have gone for a tighter crop. Nice job though.

Thanks a lot MacRy, good to know - will take that into consideration next time!

Very good.. That's what you said.. Getting out of the comfort zone...Besides the framing, try to play around a bit in post with the face colors and tints, that's were it becomes tricky...however, no pain no gain..I also had to learn and lately I try to have the model or friend to look slightly away from the lens .. You mind sharing the EXIF base data..
Keep up the good work...

A building that is hosting musical events regularly definitely benefits from having walls that are not parallel. They avoid standing waves that then cancel certain audible frequencies. Poor quality Frank Gehry knockoffs abound the planet, unfortunately. I started noticing them popping up back in the late 90's. The addition of modern to old can be a sight to behold when it is done well, or it can just look rubbish and like an unplanned tack-on.

The debate with myself continues...

This is something I have had internal disputes with myself about too. However, whenever there is a new addition of special note at our open plains zoo I end up back there again!

Wow! Yours is far worse than mine, Peter! It looks like it sprouted up overnight in a crystalline form of some sort. Lacking the subtlety and soft nuances of, for example, the Louvre and its glass pyramid.

I'm loving your sharing of this series. I've always enjoyed seeing before and afters of places that man once had strict control over and especially seeing how Mother Nature reclaims her patch so easily.

I thought they were beach huts, initially. I love the silhouettes against the colourful sky and the repetition of the buildings is very cool, to me.

Skipool Creek, on the River Wyre in Lancashire, where old boats go to die, and old guys try to resurrect them. There’s quite a community here, with home-made jetties extending out into the river. It’s all wonderfully ramshackle…

Taken with an iPhone 5S.

This has volumes to speak, Alex. There's connotations of the past, present and future all in the one scene. Well spotted and captured. I hope that you are printing some of your images and displaying them in exhibition of some sort or another.

A straight on view to the newest section of the convention centre in town. The centre of frame curved roof part opens into the angular copper coloured bit, which internally may work, but in my unqualified eye it misses the mark big-time when viewed externally. The section on the left is now being rebuilt too and guess what, it's yet another style altogether! So it will end up looking like three separate buildings smooshed together.

Thank you! Absolutely, that's definitely a bit tricky - I've tried to go for a bright wash with a bit of a split toning. That's a good tip, thank you!
