I have a Nikon D7100 for exactly the same reason.Just got a D500 today. Wanted the crop sensor for when I shoot telephoto--animals/birds/action/sports. The marketing hyped its low light performance, but my expectations were low given that it's a crop sensor.
D500, Nikon 80-400mm @ f/4.5, 1/80 sec, ISO 32,000.
The noise is ~equal to my D810 at ISO 12.5k and my Leica M(240) at ISO 3.2k (both full frame sensors). So 1 1/2 stops better than my D810 and 3 1/2 stops better than my Leica if my maths are correct.
Each body (and system) is a different tool with different strengths and weaknesses. But wasn't expecting the crop sensor on the D500 to end up being a better low light performer than my D810. Color me pleasantly surprised. May need to do some controlled tests...
The windmill, Lytham St Annes...
Lovely scene Doylem. At first I wondered if that was you in the scene but the hair seems different. After looking at it for a while, I wondered what you thought about swinging the camera round to the right a bit, maybe at least halving the distance from the windmill to the left hand edge, possibly taking out that bit of white wall and the car to the right of it, and adding a bit more negative space to the right (if it is negative space that is). Beautiful sky!
Maybe he felt like he needed to just do it!Not me in the pic; even with the self-timer set to 20sec I couldn't run that far.
I took about 30 shots of the windmill - horizontal, vertical, with people and without - and kept about 10, which I've uploaded to my stock pic library. I try to give pic-buyers a choice of compositions, including empty areas as 'copy space'...
I can understand (kind of) why someone would paint his house like the flag of St George, while England are still in the European Championship. By why give a free plug to Nike?
Ahh, probably my favorite Jag. Lovely! An old Jaguar
