I have decided I am crazy. I spend hours looking at images, I really adore looking at images that have a grungy retro look and feel to them. The ones that look like the blacks have been crashed and the vibrance reduced. I love that look and feel.

So I try to do some effects on my own images, I play with split tones and amateur creative adjustments then I get all twitchy and come on here and start whining about my images not being vibrant bright and sharp!

I cannot have retro 70s looks and bright sharp vibrant images! need to choose..

Is it just me? am I the only one with this dilemma?

You have no idea how much I struggle with post processing decisions. Nearly every photo. :(

Tip on your snail photo? Would've been better taken even lower, closer and with the snail coming towards the lens. Well, at least in my opinion. ;)

Really? Your images don't look like you are struggling.

@kenoh I certainly can relate to your frustration. My images never look as good as as others I see. But I realised many years ago a lot of the problem is in my head.

I agree your snail might look better up close and personal, but IMO snails are pretty ugly up close!

And what about the feelings of the snail? Seeing Ken in close-up can't be a happy experience as well.

Good tip thx you are right like the other post.. i was too trigger happy... took techie approach:

If want picture of snail
Fit long lens
Get close to snail
Kneel down avoiding wet knee
Click shutter
Picture of snail captured?
Yes:
Success
End
No:
Swear
Go to "click shutter"

:) i need to scope out the angles more...

Well no there is that too... hence strapping on a 200mm...

Oh **** yeah. Is the dodge and burn too much?, have I put too much colour in the shadows?, should it be warmer or cooler?, does it look too 'fake'?.
Nearly every edit, nearly every time.

Without being a dick, I envy you guys using just Lightroom, Capture One or hehe...Aperture. I have to use Photoshop for most of my portraits, it's a half hour to an hour process and it can be a real chore knowing when to pull in the reigns as far as editing goes.

How much is too much?

I think your getting it right!

I guess the real answer is what style do you want? How it looked when you were there or some other finish. Or if you're like me you just push a few sliders until it doesn't look too bad!

What are you blathering on about Ken? Ignored it because I was too busy enjoying your snail shot ;)

I will echo what The Bad Guy said both regarding editing in post and regarding ideas for this specific image. We all fret to one degree or another. Experiment and keep an open mind for different ways of doing what you've already done. I can see it in my head as more of a macro shot with the snail coming towards me, but that doesn't detract from your shot which I happen to like. Different ways of shooting the same subject can all yield interesting results. I vaguely remember you giving me similar advice in our private correspondences....
