This is a fantastic image. It captures the joy and movement of a band in the groove. Very, very nice!
Thanks for that,

I enjoy the challenge of snapping folks doing things..... Where I lived until last year I provided some of the photos for the sports pages of the local newspaper. Snapping musicians ups the challenge. Added to movement there is also low and changing light to contend with.

Getting a good shot means a lot of things coming together at the right moment, and anticipating thatmoment.... then taking quite a few photos to get a few worthwhile ones. High ISO, along with low f stop, slow shutter speed and a lot of patience are key.

I observe subjects for a while to get an idea of how they move, then anticipate when they likely to be still for a moment. Prefocus, of course, and be prepared to hold off until the lights are right and the moment is right, then snap. I don't use multi shot, unless there is reason to do so (such as capturing the action of the bowler in cricket) Likewise for flash.... it is the last thing musicians want!

Today's photo didn't come off quite so well technically, but it did capture interesting interaction. These musicians are among my acquaintances, unfortunately 11,000 km away from where I am now. It used to be just 90 km up the coast on my motorcycle. The old Chappy (English) is an old hand, and a member of The Happy Bastards, who perform at the Happy Snapper at the weekend. The young thing (Thai) was a recent recruit to the Snapper Brothers, the house band at the pub.

Needfx, I saw the reflection of lighting on the front of the white container and realized that it had to have been from external lighting, whether a strobe or a continuous-light source, placed in front and slightly to one side of the container in order to balance out the image with the fairly bright natural light coming in the window behind the scene. The other side of the container is slightly less illuminated, another clue, and provides a nice natural overall effect.

Darmok, is that a locust? (Cicada). Somewhere I saw that the 17-year-locusts have started making their presence known this spring and that all of us will be eventually seeing and hearing more of them.

It is a cicada, but I believe this is your classic dog-day cicada. These are larger and more camouflage colored, while the long-cycle varieties are smaller and black/orange (if memory serves). I’ve lived through 2 spells of the long-cycle cicadas. Last time we managed to get both the 13 year and 17 year varieties emerging in the same summer. It was deafening!

Ah, I thought it looked different than the one I saw in a photo on another site, where the guy identified it as a 17-year locust. He lives further down south here in Virginia, in the mountainous area, and they're already being treated to the sounds. Poor you -- The 17-year ones make enough noise, I can't imagine having both varieties out and all the ensuing racket!! Yikes!!!

I expect we'll be seeing and hearing the 17-year locusts pretty soon, but so far I haven't noticed any. I should be grateful for that!

1/6 is too slow for human movement, maybe at 1/80 which is really pushing it, with 1/125 being the threshold, while your shot does look handheld. Having your iso at 1600 means you could've boosted it to 3200 or 6400 and fix any noise in post. Your image would look less murky overall, unless that's the look you're going for, in which case, get it monochromed. Framewise, wooden structure provides an interesting frame in frame situation, and your crop further intensifies it, and I like weird, unorthodox crops.

cheers
Patrick
