This is my neighbor, Fritz. He’s 83 yrs old and a recent widower. He is a character for sure. We have 2 Labs that I walk every day and it never fails that he’s waiting on his porch when I return with walk #1. The dogs just love him. He’ll get a bowl of water with ice for the girls and we’ll sit and talk. Lots of stories, sometimes repeated ones but still good. My wife goes to a gym 3 days a week and he’s always outside waiting on his porch to talk with her when she returns. He’s always doing something like building a cricket box for a kid whose parents he knows or gardening. He grows tomatoes in his back yard and is always comparing them to my wife’s. Of course, his are always bigger. He’s more than willing to help as this guys got skills. Home builder, electrician, don’t think he’s much in the way of autos although he loves his ‘50s Chevys and can tell you everything about them. I’ve taken him to 2 C&Cs and I think he likes them. Gets to talk to the owners of the cars he likes. Funny, I posted a photo earlier this month of the back end of a DeTomaso Pantera GTS. It was a shot that I wanted to show the width of the rear tire plus the DETOMASO lettering on a suspension part on the rear. Well, later he told my wife that he couldn’t understand why I took 20 minutes to take a photo of a tire. What a hoot! As a kid he challenged Johnny Weissmuller (Tarzan of long ago) to a diving and swimming race. Fritz as he tells it, dove off a bridge in Pittsburgh, PA. Of course Fritz being Fritz he didn’t just dive off the bridge but the top of the truss on the bridge. He got fined $69 for that but did get to talk to Tarzan who told him that he didn’t do any of those cool things in the Tarzan movies, a stuntman did as he was afraid of heights. This was one of his tamer stories. The upshot of it all…I encourage everyone to take time to talk to the older generation be it relatives, neighbors or strangers. Everyone will get a lot out of it. The world will be a bit diminished when gents like this pass on.
