Thanks. You are better than I am at digital exposure so Here are my questions. By "expose to the right" do you mean adjusting in-camera or with the ACR Exposure slider in PS? If the latter, is "to the right" the + side of the slider? I was more concerned in coaxing the cloud out of the sky in this one. I gave it +.5 and a lot of detail came out of the shadows.
I'm talking about exposure at the moment of capture, using the camera's histogram (and ideally
UniWB, which I use on most of my shots). Exposing to the right (ETTR, see
this and
this) is very easy to do. Just make sure that you can see your RGB channels separately in playback view on the camera and check after a test shot to see if you're clipping any highlights. If not, let in more light until you're right up against the right side with one of the color channels. Also make sure you have the highlight blinker warning turned on for playback. If anything is blinking, then you need to pull back, but if not, let in more light.
With this method you lose nothing on the highlight end of things and gain more range and detail in your shadows. So you could still have that cloud just as you want it, and you could have nice trees too.
