I love both of the last 2 photos you posted. I wish we had that kind of landscape around here. I don't get the chocolate box reference though.

Cheers spitfirejd - but you do have the Blue Ridge mountains and plenty of other lovely landscapes and waterfalls in/around Virginia. The landscapes are one of the few compensations for the weather here :)

Chocolate-box refers to the sort of classic, inoffensive sort of please-everyone pictures you used to get on the lids of boxes of chocolates (candies) over here. Sometimes also on biscuit boxes.

I don't understand the meaning of this question.
Churches that are used for mass?
Churches that can be visited to appreciate the history and architecture?
Churches that are permanently staffed and welcoming people seeking shelter or asylum?

I like to visit churches and admire the architecture, but I dislike the institute they stand for. ( but this forum is not the place to start this discussion ).

The point was a gentle question about modernity.

ie. in an ever growing non believing society (mostly western developed) there is a seeming heightening of the number of churches that feel the need to be more defensive (thieves, vandals) than welcoming. Nothing abrasive meant.....

I am sitting in my house free and easy, I do not mean to offend. Just thinking with my fingers. If I had someone here to talk to that would have been an aside. Hmmm.. I'm supposed to be a tough house?

Kind Regards All . Sharkey

No problem - constructive comment is always a good way to learn and improve but style is more a personal preference. IMHO this group generally strikes the right balance between fun and learning and acts as a great gateway for people like myself to get into photography and to explore and develop to whatever extent they want/can. Yes, sarcasm is unbecoming but I'm human ;)

Simple reason for cropping the corners - focal length of lens and inability to take enough steps backwards in that spot. I'd guess we all know instinctively that the corners are there so didn't think their omission was a great sacrifice.

Understood.

It often strikes me that my own problems in framing an image are not relevant to others:oops:. Must be less questioning!

Sometime, I will admit (most times) my best stuff is because I had no choice but to press the button!

Amazing how often I have (over many years) taken the 'plaudits' for an image I thought was (not very good) **** because it was beyond my control:):)

I like VM the image anyway. Go figure.

Regards . Sharkey

Ah. I understand. Thanks for the explanation. I'm sometimes a bit thick.

Yes. Most churches are only open limited hours. That's the (only) benefit of visiting more religious countries (Italy for example): the buildings are open to the public all day.

Thanks for the explanation and pointing out to me that I need to update my profile. I moved to flat, boring Delaware recently. I'm looking forward to getting some pictures of the small rivers and wetlands (I need to get a kayak), but prefer the mountains. When I did live in Virginia, I was along the southeast coast and didn't get out to the mountains in western Va often enough. It was a good 4 hour drive.

At least there's no sales tax in Delaware (unless that's changed since I was last there):) Brandywine has nice gentle scenery and you're not far from Valley Forge but I see what you mean.

C'mon , you're just training for your next trip to Zion . Maybe the Narrows or the Subway ?

Funny you say that. We were told we are going to Vegas again for kick off this year. Back to the Venetian this time so will be lovely. Looking forward to a half hour walk between my room and the front door... :)

So yes trying to work out how I can maybe get to Monument Valley and Arches NP. Then maybe head through Death Valley on way to LA to see brother in law (who moved there from NYC this year).

I am really really lucky I know, I need to make the most of the gifts given to me.

In my case, I am carrying multiple persons weight disorder! :)

Wow! this is the shot I wanted to go for yesterday but couldnt get it! damnit! you are so good at this!

Cheers Ken, 95% luck in waiting for a bit of texture in the otherwise grey, dreich sky. My favourite lens (Canon 16-35 f4L) makes this sort of shot so much easier.

You have a definite style sir.
Cheers - I'd actually love to be creative enough to have a style but I like to take a variety of photo subjects and just see what looks best on a case-by-case basis.

Yup , State Line Lookout off the Palisades Interstate Pkwy. Went looking for Raptors , but no luck . First time I'd been there in winter for at least 30 years .

Wow! it has been 15 years since I last took a drive over the Tappan Zee headed for the Palisades Mall! That brings back memories!

I was reasonably happy to have taken these shots until this morning my friend posted a shot he took for a fashion spread in Finnich Glen. While mine is a nice snapshot, yes, his is otherworldly and shows the stark difference in our skills... :-(

Play it for all its' worth . Long distance travel on someone else's dime is something you can't pass by , particularly if you can wiggle in a few days for yourself . Just remember to check the bottom of your shoes every morning .

(To make sure whatever you stepped in doesn't fall off )

One more Iditarod one comments always appreciated.

Onto the Ice.jpg by mrkramer, on Flickr

I like this photo but I question whether the horizon should be horizontal or not - the musher is upright but the trail marker is leaning slightly to the left, which could just be how it was placed! I guess that's the one thing I don't like about it (ie the uncertainty about whether there is or is not a mistake for lack of a better word).

I do like that this photo shows the isolation of the place and race itself.

Cheers
