I agree, zoos can be depressing. However modern zoos have changed, more focus on the well being of the animals, less focus on the display of animals. Since we have kids we have visited quite some zoos, simple petting zoos and regular zoos. It's a good way to introduce children to animals they would otherwise not be able to see in real life ( without hopping on a plane, or hiding in a tent in the middle of a nature reserve). Here's one from our recent trip to a local zoo. A nice zoo, large 'cages' for the animals. No animals that really should have larger spaces ( big cats, elephants etc).
