I gotcha, sorry didnt notice the trails the first time around.

Maybe find a more elevated viewpoint, looking down on a stretch of road... so the light trails will make more 'visual sense'...

Agreed, a higher vantage is yields more desirable results...

That explains it. Do you use Photomatic? It has a selection that attempts to align images in just these scenarios.

I do use a Photomatix plugin (via Aperture 3) when I do the HDR images. But I imagine the difference between "registers" in the aircraft shot was just a little too large for the program to deal with. Sorry for taking so long to respond and thanks for commenting.
