If you want to post or pm some pics I'll try to identify some of them. Disclaimer: I'm not very au fait with rose varieties. :)

I like this very much. I'm rather partial to abstracts and love the shapes and colouring on this one.

Lovely shot. I like the way the background is made up of similar colours to the boats, but muted.

No wonder you've got so many dandelions in your lawn!!! :)

That would be great!

As the flowers begin to blossom, I will start putting them up... if you recognise them, shout.

Here is a starter for ten. These are beautiful coloured flowers and the trees with them on burst with colour

Evergreen, dark green leaves? Can't see the leaves very well but have a look at rhododendron on the web. Likes acid soil; the leaves can go a bit yellow when there's lime in the soil, but I think quite a lot of Scotland has acid soil. If it's not that pm me a snap from a bit further back so I can see what the plant looks like too. Fingers crossed! :)

Mount St. Helens.

Right before sunset. Taken from the Johnston Ridge Observatory. The closest point to the volcano that's still open to the public.
The observatory itself was closed for the season, which meant I had the entire place to myself (save for one other couple). This was the culmination of an afternoon drive from Portland to Mount St. Helens, with many stops along the way. Tried to time it so we got to Johnston Ridge around sunset for the best light.

Thanks for the kind words about my shot of the Callanish Stones. It was pure luck that I arrived when I did; the rain stopped for five minutes, while the clouds parted.

This is Dun Carloway Broch: a well-preserved example of a kind of building in use in Highland Scotland two thousand years ago (when the Romans started to colonise England). The outer wall is doubled... to contain steps between the walls: presumably for defence...

Yes evergreen, long leaves like in this picture. This is what the flowers come from.

I haven't posted in a while, figured it's time to jump back in!

I would love some C&C on this one. I love "green forest" images, but I feel like I missed something on this one; is it a poor composition, lack of subject, missed focus, over-processed?? I find I like how it looks in thumbnails much better than when I open it up.

Anyways, thanks in advance!

In the words of a photographer I met in Kenya, Peter Beard, luck is an important tool in a photographer's tool kit. Great photo!

A bit like my bluebell picture a little further up, it's often hard to convey the feeling of what you felt in the woods when you took the picture, into a photo.
I don't think there is anything wrong with the composition, it just looks flatter than how you remember.
A bit of dappled sunlight can help. But only if it was there of course!

Noob here, both to the board and to photography. C&C welcome, but please be gentle.

Welcome aboard. We are all gentle here. Great place to learn.

I like the picture. Nice detail and colours, I like the contrast of the golden interior as opposed to the deep blue hoarding. Maybe I would have took a step closer, maybe would have cropped out the cycles to the left.

I have been on here lurking for years, finally started contributing about a year ago and my photography has improved immensely. The people on here are great and very helpful so just go for it.

Enjoy!

I think the saturation is nice, not too far. I suspect what you are missing is something to draw your eye, to tell the story of the moment. Think that maybe is you had got a leading line from the trees it may have "slotted into place" a little more but overall still a nice capture. IMHO

Yup, definitely rhododendron. :) Just message me any pics and I'll try to help.

We used to have one. It was very popular with the bees when in full bloom. Should make for some nice shots.

Thanks guys, yes, I dont have a clue about the garden. I want to keep it nice but it needs a good tidy up and I lack the skills. These flowers in particular are too close to the cars when on the driveway but my god their colours are beautiful. Almost day glo pink! a nightmare for clipping the red channel! they are incredible and at each stage of their budding (?) process they are beautiful. Yes, I was almost stung when taking a picture yesterday ha ha...

Lovely. I will be back over there in a couple of weeks time for a work event at the conference centre. Looking forward to dodging a few presentations to get out and shoot some pictures along the riverside.

Yes! Thank you! "Flatness" I think is what is bothering me about this image. No dappled light that day, but the forest was "glowing". It was amazing...

Thanks for the comments! A leading line would have definitely helped combat the flatness as mentioned above... Something to strive for next time!

Thanks again for the comments, everyone.

Here is another shot of the same forest from my last post, but from a different angle. I think the large burr on the tree ads a bit of a focal point to this shot that was missing from the last. C&C welcome, of course.

Mine for today. I've shot this tree a few times as I find the roots interesting, but I've never been entirely happy with it.

I like the subject matter. It has nice textures and tones. In terms of framing the patch of green left in the top right corner is a bit distracting and I would like it better if it was cropped out to just the tree in that corner - the smaller one, not the Mother of Roots. The light in the tree leaves is too bright for me. The contrast difference between the foreground and background is too great. Reshooting or reprocessing it to tone down the bright areas and bring out more detail up there would probably make this the photo you are trying to make it into.

Fabulous area for a photo drive. The run in from the West late in the day to this point is thrilling no matter how many times you have been there. I like the composition you have in the photo. A lot of shots from this area cut in to the mountain alone and pass over it's place in the grander scene of the landscape. Nice capture.

If you are inclined to camping, try to make a week trip up to the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and branch out into the surrounding area more. We camped at Iron Creek to the North a few years ago and we had a great time exploring and photographing. I was born in Ohio and lived several years on the East coast, but the Pacific NorthWest is my home.

Thank you. It was my first visit to the area. I can see how it can be amazing to visit time and again. I don't think I would ever get tired of those views. (Plus I am a bit fascinated by volcanoes and their stories).

I most definitely plan to go back. And like I said, having the whole place to myself made the whole experience otherworldly.

Here's the requisite "close-up" to the mountain. :)
